The Wii...any good?

For gaming I find the Wii to be a great complement to a PC. You get your "proper" games on the PC and you fire up the Wii for a couple of minutes of fun every now and again. I'd guess though that if I had any of the other consoles (360 or PS3), the Wii would probably get less playtime.

Since my most played game is multiplatform. (Guitar Hero)

I have to admit I just can't get used to the Wii as a "Actually playing" console. I guess I'm just not as comfortable with the controls as I hoped I'd be and I think I figured out why. Being left-handed I want to point on the screen with my left "pointer hand" but I also (due to 20 years of console gaming) want to move around with my left thumb.

I actually noticed how ingrained certain control schemes are into my brain when I tried to play some PS3 the other day. I just can't get my thumb over to the left stick after playing lots of games with the GameCube controller (And since I played an FPS, Mirror's Edge, I also wanted to strafe with the right stick which was how it was done back in Perfect Dark, which was the last Console FPS I played :D)

That was a tangent.

But I find the games I enjoy the most don't require the "point and move" (Excite Truck, Umbrella Chronicles, Brawl with GC controller, Guitar Hero) and those that do feel clumsy (Mario Galaxy)

Understanding Fun Game Design ~ Case Study: Tetris

I HATE PEOPLE WHO HATE TETRIS

(This is true actually. People who can't see the obvious value and quality in Tetris automatically get a little less respect from me)

I don't know what to say about his article though. It's good and it seems to cover all the bases which means that there's not really much else to add than "awesome article mate".

Tetris is a bit like many other seemingly simple games, there's great depth in very simple rules. In computer games puzzlers usually cover this. Generally puzzlers that are more "advanced" are not as fun as those that are simpler. Essentially you need to know intuitively what you're supposed to do and Tetris does this beautifully. (Though the first time you might think you're supposed to build a tower)

Indie vs. Amateur - an article everyone should read

thinly veiled attack on amateur gaming making:
Am I the only one who saw this as a piece of love and devotion to the amateurs and more like an attack on the cold calculating indie developers?

I guess it depends. I like the free bohemian lifestyle* of amateur gamemaking. Constant procrastination and complaining about not finishing anything instead of actually doing something. All of this stuff rings so true to me.**

Sure there are those lamers that are amateurs in the hopes that they'll become indie one day (pfft) or those exceptions that follow an "indie code" in an amateur environment (we all laugh at you behind your backs I think).

This whole community (as I've seen it. As always there's exception but we're talking the norm here) is completely and utterly amateur. I'd say nearly all developers here "follow" over half of the examples of amateur in the article. Don't fight it.

*Amateurs are the hippies of gamemakers! Oh my god! I hate hippies!

**This is all just an excuse so I can feel good about not doing anything "it's a lifestyle choice"

Dystopian games?

Mirror's Edge comes to mind. I actually didn't think Fallout because a dystopia is a bit of a different thing in my mind. So it automatically jumped to Mirror's Edge.

But if you're going for the technopunkish thingies then there's also (obviously) Deus Ex.

This needs more pirates. In fact it needs more zombie space pirates.
Goddammit none of the italicized terms offer possibilities for zombie space pirates.

United Council of Civilized Planets
The UCCP is an elitist group of planets and governments that feel that they are better than everyone else in the universe and never pass up on a chance to tell everyone else so. UCCP was originally founded in the early dark age as "a beacon of light amidst the barbarism", by businessman and war profiteer Samuel Knudsen.

In the UCCP every member planet has its own representative with its own vote. This lead to a scandal when the Hurrengtott Empire decided to get some extra power in the council by having a dozen governers from planets that couldn't sustain life, the peak of the scandal was upon the discovery that one of the planets didn't exist at all!

The Hurrengtotts were promptly kicked out of the UCCP for "uncivilized behaviour". Angry at this development Hurrengtott leader J'klovis founded another union under the banner United Council of Uncivilized Planets (UC2P)

Over the last decades UCCP membership have steadily declined. The pacifist nature of the UCCP and its inability to agree on anything have made member planets prime targets for less scrupulous raiders and empires. So some members have dropped out because they ceased to exist and other members have dropped out because they wanted to arm themselves with forbidden weaponry to repel attackers.

Today the UCCP is little more than a beaurocratic union of planets that pass laws and regulations that the members are supposed to follow. The group has become very insular and have very little trade with outsiders due to high taxations. The member planets feel they are superior to everyone else, claiming that the barbarians hammering on their gates are indeed barbaric and not deserving of any proper attention.

The UCCP headquarters is on Olydna which is in the center of the Knudsen System and is one of the most well-protected planets in the galaxy. The planetary and system defense systems will kill off anyone without proper authorization and the visa-process can sometimes take up to six months for anyone wanting to visit. Olydna was the home planet of Samuel Knudsen and a lot of his wealth is said to be tied up in the planet, making the planet one of the most valuable, as well as one of the best defended.

So far no pirate has managed to get to the wealth in the Knudsen System though Necromancer-Pirate Momagoroth the Undying sent in a fleet of ships to conquer the system but was stopped before he could reach the planet. A memorial of the brave defense can be found on Olydna's Moon Otukt.

Any of you guys/gals swim?

I will never swim in the sea! When I was little I was attacked by a crab as I walked in knee high water, it pinched my foot. It's just put me off for life, I hate all sea creatures and all fish are incredibly ugly and gross looking. I've been scared of crabs ever since.
I have a pretty bad fish-phobia myself. Once I saw a dead fish floating in the sea in one of those beaches where you can walk pretty far out. So I ran about a hundred meters through waist-high water back to the beach and didn't go back in the water that day :)

For some reason though I'm not afraid of living fish when I'm in the water (or I tend not to think about them too much) since I sort of know that they always tend to swim away from me anyway. (And my fish-phobia is the least bad when I see fish swimming around from above water. The second fish... I'm feeling uncomfortable just writing this I'll stop now)

Any of you guys/gals swim?

There seem to be a lot of talk about pool-swimming. Who actually swims in, uh, proper water? I myself am not exactly the biggest fan of the ocean/salt water (even though I won't say no) but I frequently swim in lakes (or possibly ponds. It's not like they're very large. One of my favorite places one summer was a pond the size of a football field hidden in the forest. It was a nice place and you could almost get the whole way there by bike).

I for one don't really like swimming in pools at all. Though I like playing in pools :)

Any of you guys/gals swim?

I float more than swim. I just can't be bothered with going fast. Instead I just like to lie on my back in the water and float silently away. Usually I first swim away a decent distance from the beach so there's not a whole lot of others around.

Next I just need to find a way to get a book out there without the pages being completely destroyed and I'll lie in the water reading.

On the other hand I haven't been swimming too much the last couple of summers which is a bit of a shame.

Back in blue...

Welcome back comrade. I remember you.

For the podcast.

I will take Mog's spot on the podcast.
