Designing an RTS Interface

(made it bigger for easier view)
The thing that strikes me the most is how non-RTS it looks. It's a very turnbased interface. I've found that generally in RTS you rarely get outside the "main action" screen. Instead there are parts of the view that gets filled with extra information (like an infotab on the side, rather than a full-screen planetary overview.)
I've also found a lot recently that right-clicking usually tends to show up a context menu where you can do most of your doings without ever bringing up the planetary screen.
Of course real time management sims tend to have some full-screen things. Though even there most things are done through tabs that only take up part of the screen. Depending on how stressful the real time is this is something you should consider. (even slow RTSes like Hearts of Iron keep the "main action" area visible at nearly all times)
Cheat System
I have loads of cheats when I test the game. Usually some wall that will give me items I need when I started from a position that wasn't the start. And other bug testing cheats. ("what will happen if I double the items somehow and try to give a SECOND one to the guy?")
As for concept art and extras cheats. I don't really consider those cheats. They are Easter Eggs. There's a difference between the two. One is secret stuff that give you secrets and extras. The other one gives you stuff or abilities you shouldn't have. (godmode, unlimited ammo/potions/coinage etc)
Of course some easter eggs are semi-cheats in that they give you an easter egg weapon or something similar like that. But it could always be done so that even the easter egg doesn't break the game.
So there are beta-test cheats (that sometimes gets left in the game, by mistake or just for fun), easter eggs and cheats for people who suck so much they can't finish the game without them.

Monopoly Strikes Again!
The real problem is that Monopoly is inherently a bad game. It suffers from the Slippery Slope syndrome in that once one player gets the upper hand the victor is clear but the game doesn't end for a long time.
It's also slightly boring that essentially there's few other mechanics than rolling dice and moving the piece around.

Top Ten Topic: Most Memorable Video Game Moments
This time I don't have any real order. I just come up with them as I go along.
Beating Manchester United (Championship Manager 97/98)
I was a third division team (Scarborough) and had been fighting my way through the FA Cup and in the semi-final (I think it was) I was up against the mammoth of Manchester United. I pour all my heart into that game. Making sure my players were at the top of their game.
I won 2-1 and it felt awesome. Especially considering that the team (despite playing for over ten seasons) never made it out of the third division.
Playing through Nintendo World Cup co-operatively on Ice
Nintendo World cup is an awesomely violent football game. And you can play it on multiple surfaces. The rocky one where people stumble and the ice one are the two that are the most fun. There's something awesome about being slide-tackled and then sliding over the whole field.
Playing it co-operatively is even more awesome.
Beating Tecmo World Cup
Another football game. Strange how these appear. We were a gang of guys who cheered and played Tecmo World Cup quite a bit. Fighting our way through super shots and impossible Russian goalkeepers. I'm fairly certain it took several weeks from our escapades into the quarter finals to get to that final game vs Brazil and beat their asses.
Good memories. I even made a board game inspired by Tecmo World Cup and the whole concept with super shots and other fun stuff has made this one of my favorite football games every. Why don't people do RPG-Football mashups anymore?
Beating Super Mario Bros ten time
This was actually pretty stupid. But a lame rumour went around the neighbourhood that if you played through SMB ten times Mario would, instead of jumping regularily, do somersaults. So we sort of sat out to prove that this was most definitely not the case. So we sat down and played some Super Mario Bros for a couple of hours.
Still Alive
Playing through Portal, having an awesome time and then being rewarded by that awesome song. I had been looking around internet and found that there was SOME meme going on. And that there was SOME awesome song around. But I didn't know where, how or what. I was immediately sucked inand it was aweseome. And I loved it.
Playing Perfect Dark with my sister
Perfect Dark's multiplayer was something special and fun. Playing co-operatively against an assortment of bots made for every skill level out there. It was fun and me and my sister player a lot of that game over one year.
Final Fantasy VIII Hype
This was during my early days of internet and I remember going around for everything Final Fantasy since I was a huge Final Fantasy fag after playing VII. There was something awesome about this video and my hopes were sickeningly high.
That part of the game did deliver. But by the end of the game I had already begun my road towards disliking jRPGs. I never finished IX, feeling it was just the same thing over again. And meanwhile I had played a lot of they're-all-the-same SNES RPGs as well as finding the awesome that was Fallout.
FFVIII was my last great jRPG experience. And it was really great in the beginning.
Getting my NES
I remember this day like it was yesterday. It was my first summer holiday from school and I was visiting some relatives over a couple of days. It wasn't exactly the greatest of times but I managed. When my parents came to get me they told me we had a NES!
It still bugs me a bit today that everyone else in the family got to play that thing before me.
Finding RPG Maker
Now I hate RPGMaker as much as anyone else, but upon finding it the first time it was the awesomest thing ever. Finally I could realize my gamemaking dreams, even if it was in a jRPG format. During my first day of having the program I'd already made my first town, with puzzles and a lame dungeon and I was well on my way. Obviously that early game sucked big balls but it was also my path to the gamemaking community that I've been part of now for far too long.
I don't know how many this is but I'm sure it's enough for now. It's getting more forced by the minute 8^)

[Discuss] Character Differentiation
I think one of the best ways to get differentiation is really to make more skills useful. I think a major part of homogenous characters is the fact that certain skills are just better than others so you pick those. If you have a party then I think skill-capping is one that should be tried more often. So that you could get multiple characters where each is specialized without the arbitary restriction of class.
However mostly I've seen skill-capping in games where you play a lone character. Which of course is also nice since it forces you to pick a certain kind of character. But people usually complain that they've built a "broken character" that just can't win. I'd say that's also a design flaw, even though I think 90% of the time people complaining just suck.
I think also in cases of set characters. (i.e. characters you find rather than create) they can have a certain skill path going for them from the beginning. You find a mechanic in a bar. He'll be good at mechanical skills from the get go. Then I guess you'll be able to choose what he'll get when he levels up but the incentive is there to build on what you've got and not make him a medic or a computer hacker. (and if you do it's your own fault)
A version of skill limiting system is also one where you pick skills depending on a profession or class. But once those are picked you are still able to learn skills outside it just at a higher cost. Which means that theoretically anyone can learn anything but certain skills are easier to level up. The option to have non-class skills can be good in case there's no one in the party with a certain skill of if the person in question goes and dies you can still have a back-up guy who sucks at it but can at least do it.
I think characters should die more to give more of this kind of dilemma 8^)

I'm going to hazard a guess based on your sig. Tales of Innocence.
I suppose I could also guess random JRPG #498.
