The thing is that your battle system right now is somewhat dominating the game (of course, because we did not see anything else). To make your game really enjoyable it could be one of two poles. the other pole would be something else - map interaction for example.
I can really recommend theese games for inspiration: Gargoyles Quest (gameboy, because of the background world), Demons Crest (SNES, because of the background world and mini games), Sword of Hope (gameboy, becuase of the battle-system). just google them and chew yourself through some walkthroughs (its hard but you learn, even as a game-developer).
