Hrm...Some Suggestions For An RPG.

You're right about 7th Saga! It did make a western release, however so did Front Mission. =D

Robert E. Howard

The following post is a tradition for me to bring up.

Robert E. Howard, the man responsible for the Sword and Sorcery genre, is by far one of my favorite short story writers. For those who don't know of REH, he wrote Conan the Barbarian, Solomon Kane, King Kull, Bran Mak Morn, a bunch of westerns, boxing and detective fiction. If I recall, he wrote about 300 stories and most of them are entertaining as hell IMO.

Now maybe RMN can prove me wrong, but it's been my experience that most people (under the age of 35) who claim to like adventure/fantasy/fiction have no clue who Howard is. Yet, you mention one of Howard's contemporaries, Tolkien, and people are marching down-down to goblin town and the shire! I just find it kinda absurd that nearly all the people I've talked to who've seen the Conan movies (which are great Ahnuld flicks, but TERRIBLE Conan adaptations) didn't even know Conan existed as a series of short stories and novels! I'm not talking about they hadn't read them, they never even HEARD of them. I know it's pretty common for a book based movie to have its roots go unnoticed, but with a pop-culture figure like Conan, one would imagine knowledge of the original craftsman and his stories would also be common knowledge. Maybe I'm the exception, as I was hooked on them at an early age, drawn in at first by Sprague de Camp's reprints with the Frazetta (who kicks ass) cover art from my Dad's collection. As a result, I was pretty much launched into liking RPGs and Hack n' Slashes of the NES gen.

Anyway, as it's probably obvious by now, I'm a big fan of the Howard's work and felt like making a topic to discuss and spread word to other people. If you like action, adventure, enemies being cleaved asunder and sultry women being seduced, I'd highly recommend Conan. Solomon Kane for those who can do without the scantily clad women and would rather prefer a puritan era gun toting, rapier wielding vanquisher of evil.

Hell, I could go on mentioning the impact R.E.H. had on a shitload of the fantasy we all rock today, but I think I've ranted for long enough.

GO!

Rosebud.

Anyway, Chrono Trigger is a pretty solid choice, it's not my favorite SNES RPG but it's good, especially for it's time! I remember when it first came out and I played it at my friends house. When I found out that you got to travel through time, I thought the sheer idea of being in control of that was amazing. SNES + Shitty RPGs = Dividing by 0. I won't talk about FF6 much, as you mentioned you're looking for something other than DQ and FF, but I do have to say it's one of my favorite RPGs and probably my favorite FF. (6,7 and 4 constantly fight for that spot)

Other recommendations that haven't been mentioned are:
Highly Recommended: Tales of Phantasia, Lufia II, Bahamut Lagoon, Star Ocean.
Recommended: 7th Saga, Treasure of the Rudras and Front Mission.
However, all those games but Lufia II and Front Mission need to be downloaded via translated ROM as they never made a Western release.

Also I'll vouch for the Breath of Fire series, ace games.

The Envelope: An Improvised Live Text Adventure

Secure the envelope and sprint down the dirt path toward the lone door, shoulder lowered.

SMART

I am so smart! S-M-R-T!

Mirrors Edge!

Yeah I saw this trailer yesterday and was pretty impressed with the fluidity and visuals, music was pretty kickass as well. The only thing I'm worried about is the actual substance of the game, I'd have to see more before I can decide exactly how I feel about it. Cause as of now it seems like one of those games at high-risk for flair over solid gameplay. My interest is certainly piqued but that's it until further notice. Hopefully they'll release more gameplay trailers and eventually a demo!

Preference in Rpgmaker Games

As many others, I look for a well written script. There's nothing worse to me than terrible dialog and poor character development. Next would be general presentation and overall feel of the game. If the game seems like it was lovingly crafted, polished with time and effort, and some type of customization, I'll usually give it a serious go since the creator apparently did themselves. The third major thing I usually look for in RM games would be mapping. Honestly, I don't care what chipset/tileset you use, as long as you use it well.

Those are probably the big 3 I immediately look at when considering whether or not to play a RM game. =D

Chapters of the Chosen, and Japan gets DQ5 this summer (UPDATE: SO DO WE ON SEPT. 16th)

I have TWO copies of Dragon Warrior IV. Is that awesome or what?

Score! DWIV was by far one of my favorite RPGs as a kid. I loved Taloon with his puns that incapacitated monsters, hahaha! It was a big jump for me considering I went from DWI to IV. I blame my local Toys 'R Us for not having enough games in stock during the early 90s. Also, did you happen to find a DWIV Box (that you're willing to part with) when you re-discovered those NES carts? >_>

As for the original TMNT game, boo! However, TMNT2:Arcade and TMNT3:Manhattan Project, now we're talking some "tubular" turtle action!

What are you thinking about right now?

I'm thinking of how much I despise Rhea of the Coos and Cordelia Delgado.

What comes to mind from the username above you?

Typo of a cheesy bosses name from Castlevania: SotN.
