The heroes all retreated into their tents for the night. As they all rested for the next day of their journey, the villains came out to strike. Fueled by their anger of the loss of their own, they wanted to make one of the unsuspecting heroes pay. As they crept along to the tent of the victim that they had planned on attacking in secret, one of the more experienced heroes slices right through his own shelter with the blast coming straight for the villains. Before they could be seen they retreated back to their own abodes. The hero of that night laid in wake in case they came back for their target. Fortunately though, they did not.

That, indeed, was a very good question. Perhaps an even better one would have been what that particular villain thought to gain from forcing the heroes to be low level as they got mobbed and destroyed more quickly than usual. Bless you, level scaling mechanics.
