What's the matter with you, I entered even if my game ends up being irrelevant and horrible! Don't let the suck stop you from fighting!
Side Quests: Why?
I hate that, and there's a real-world example of it from Game Arts. I liked the gameplay of Grandia, but near the end they have some dungeons thrown in. It even announces in a message box "THIS IS A SIDE QUEST!! NOT PART OF THE STORY!" like we couldn't figure that out for ourselves. They should have had optional places throughout the entire game or not, it just looks tacky when you have a dungeon that actually announces itself as optional.

god that game was so cheezy and awesome at the same time.

Side Scroller online?
post=113346post=113342Online is capable in Game Maker.
The "online" part of this might really kill you. Even with all the object network handling done for you in an engine like Acknex, it might still be tricky to do.
Yeah, but that doesn't mean it will be easy.

@Wolfcoder: Why must you find every possible way to relate coding in every single post?
Perhaps that's because I'm *ahem* the WOLF CODER. I just got done telling you that the attitude applies to more than just coding though. It's perfectly valid for things like art. I'd think having fun with your work when doing art to be especially important.
I'll even apply it to making food, or writing papers. I used to warn my teacher that if they assign me a boring topic to write about, they'll have to grade a boring paper.
German 3D Game Engine
There's been this very long running series of 3D game engines called Acknex (since even DOS days I think) that I think would be great on the list of makers to choose from in game profiles. The engine itself is called Acknex and the company that made it is a German company called Conitec Datensysteme. 3DGameStudio is the name of the suite of programs that came with it (level editor, script editor, etc.).

I mentioned using it in the contest that's running and it would be nice if it said Acknex instead of Custom. The sweet thing about this engine, however, is that it can be custom. You can write your own engine in C compiled together with the SDK to make a program that runs Acknex games with your own code on top.
Here's the program icon for the version I'm using. These programs aren't free- that's the problem and I don't feel like spending money on A7 (I don't like to keep buying more software when I have stuff that already works)

That's just the styled DirectX logo with "A6" on it. Their actual logo is that epic cube with the engine version number on it.
(edit: I found another icon that's more personalized to the engine)

This would also be a nice addition so that I don't have to answer 80+ questions of "nice! what engine is that!?"

It's the general principle of being a hacker:
http://catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html
Especially point 3 (if you are bored, you are doing something wrong and need to re-think what you are doing).
A true hacker mind you, those people that undo security and crack things are called crackers. In the page he says it best- Hackers build things, Crackers break them.
Anyway, it's the best attitude to have for doing any sort of hobby. This mindset is applicable to anything you do personally as a hobby. Now you might tell me no way is the best, but that's kind of what the whole document means to tell you. It's got that kind of weird tone the Book of the Five Rings has.
That, is how you would know- by those who have been there of course.
