Lost Land: Ruin VX Episode 1

Just played through the sewers. Somebody that's played through the original 2K3 version, I'm happy to see this here on VX Ace, and in some regards I think the switch over has paid off. Everything looks so much more crisp now, and with the use of scripts, you can still implement a lot of features.

Some things that bugged me though:

1. There is a need to proofread your dialogue. A lot of it is punctuation. Instead of periods and new sentences, a lot of sentences are combined with commas.

2. I see to be able to run faster than the screen can scroll. This amounts to me having to constantly stop and let the screen catch up.

3. Considering that the "savior" has no immediate skills, the fact that he can miss so many times in a row is very annoying. He once missed three times in a row with rats. His hit rate really needs to be increased, at least until he gets some sort of skills or upgraded equipment.

Haunt: The Mansion

I give the game as it currently stands a 1-star review. I might consider increasing the rate if people could actually play it.

Heroes of Frontier

mcowdery, most of the games here are free, as you've stated. There is a commercial spot for games like this, which should be moved there like Dyhalto stated.

VX Scrip Request: Send party member away from Status screen

RMN has never been big on scripts. Your best bet would to be to ask at VX.Net, since they still focus primarily on VX.

You could try asking over at VXAN or RMW on their VX Script Request forum, but fair warning, there's been close to 0 activity in this part at VXAN, and the activity over at RMW isn't that much higher.

Basically, VX is out, Ace is in, and most sites don't have a lot of support for VX these days. If you can't get it at VX.net, then the chances of it happening are slim, unless you pay somebody or do it yourself.

How do you hand-hold the player?

Is it sad that I picked up this right away? That's what a 4-year daughter does to a guy. Not only does she have the movie, but the CD, and she watches and listens to it and sings it every day.

Can I use music from other games

No offense to the OP, but this gets asked on every community several times a year. No, it's not legal. As for allowance, the allowance can only stretch as far as the company you are ripping from.

Most RM communities will allow it and not say anything, as long as you don't share the rips. RMN is the exception, where rips are shared, but VXAN and RMW don't allow sharing rips, but will look the other way if you use them in your game.

However, if (and that's really a big "if") Square or whoever decides to pursue legal action, they do have that right. More often than not they're not going to care about some hobby RPG Maker game; but if word gets out and popularity builds, they may force you to remove the game (like they've done with the Chrono projects).

Games Using Victor Sant's Scripts

A lot of Victor's scripts isn't that they are difficult so much as they require a lot of attention and care. They're not simple plug and plays. Usually, you need to do a lot of setup to get them to work. Victor seems pretty good at providing detailed instructions to use his scripts; however, you'll find a lot of people don't want to read a manual to use a script, especially if it's multiple pages long, and so they try to jump in and go with it, only to wind up lost and even more confused than had they read the manual to begin with.

Basically, if you use Victor's scripts, you need to pay attention to detail. Don't wander around too much, stay focused. Plan on spending time reading. Victor gets easily mad when people complain or ask him about how to use a script, and he finds out you didn't bother reading.

If you don't like reading a lot before using something, his scripts may not be the way to go. Then again, learning to use a difficult script is one way to enhance your learning skills for the entire maker.

Are Core Scripts getting out of control?

A lot of these core scripts are built to force you to using all their scripts. I can't blame them, though, it's a good way to ensure people are grabbing your stuff rather than pulling different scripts from different scripters. And once people are familiar with your stuff, you might be inclined to seek them out doing commission.

However, other times it can be necessary. Sure, a secondary script can be modified to work as a stand alone, but if all scripts have to be modified like this, it starts making sense to create a core script that can be updated just once.

On the plus side, having a single scripter you utilize scripts from does help to reduce issues you have with compatability. Just research who has what and go with what feels the best for your project.

Of course, if you're not satisfied with the majority, you can also learn to script yourself.

What's the Longest You've Needed To Stay Awake?

I went 52 hours once, just to see if I could do it. I nearly went insane; started seeing things, forgetting things. After awhile, you find yourself floating in a cloud. You could be talking to somebody next to you, but it's like they're not even there.

Never again. Once in awhile I might do around 40 hours if I get caught up in a game or project and don't want to sleep, but that's about the limit I can reach before, and I only do it once in a great while.

Accepting Criticism

True, but that's not to say there aren't those who wouldn't say something like that other than to troll and start a flame war. How many? I don't know, but most people who bother with a review usually offer something more constructive than that, so it's pretty moot.

But even if you get harsh criticism that you feel may be trolling, or even a personal attack, I find it best to simply thank the player/reviewer and continue on, or at least ask questions to get him to discuss in more detail. If a troll knows you're not going to bite the bait or fight back with insults, they're likely to go somewhere else.

Luckily, RMN has some standards for reviews, though, so a simple "burn the game" comment won't suffice, unless there is something more to back it up.
