RPG Maker games obscurity iceberg

-How is Blurred Line at Level 5 of obscure? Bluerred Line is known even in Non-English communities and, even if you count how known it is only here in RMN, it has 26k downloads. How is that obscure?
sorry friend but this is the era of Pom, which has 200k downloads and likely the single most viewed youtube video of an RM game ever (though Yume Nikki's collective videos probably take it over). For the youtuber: it was tuesday. The internet was really small pond back during ABL's time, so ABL felt like a big fish to most of us.

Though there are measurements beyond downloads like cultural influence and long lasting appeal (lore wikis, fangames) Which stuff like Yume Nikki, LISA or OFF probably still dominates. Most people who played Pom probably don't know what RM even is and it'll be the only RM game they've played.

Another thing about this list is that merely being Japanese language only kinda shifts things a bit. I mean some of these games aren't as obscure to a Japanese player. Of course it's going to be obscure if it isn't translated or you're going out of your way to find something with 0 downloads.

The craft is I guess finding something notable that someone long enough in the scene can appreciate. Though an interesting hypothetical to consider are games only experienced RM users can enjoy. Like how SMW romhack players (probably) have a highly regarded hack that's way less popular but more advanced than Kaizo.

I see Darken, I agree that ABL maybe looked like a bigger fish and all that. I just wanted to understand if there was any criteria in dividing ABL and The Way into 2 different levels like I said.

I understood that too about the japanese game, not saying it should be in the same level, just saying that it could have been added, even it was even lower 'obscure' level.

Also, I'm not complaining whenever these old games will be added or not, or if there is a need to use 'precise criteria' to determine these levels. I really liked the idea nevertheless.

Okay, in my opinion there a lot of things that just don't add up.

-How is Blurred Line at Level 5 of obscure? Bluerred Line is known even in Non-English communities and, even if you count how known it is only here in RMN, it has 26k downloads. How is that obscure?
-How do you create a list like this where there is no Phylomortis?
-How The Way is level 6?

I believe the list could have been made for the perspective of someone new to RPGMaker or just missed out some things. I think it was a really cool idea but really forgot/missed some important games, some that we even talk about in the Segnin's Old RPGMaker Games Thread.

EDIT: Okay, so this list is made for the mainstream that is outside any community of RPGMaker, but my point still stands in regards to The Blurred Line and The Way. If they are 'almost unknown' at least they should be in the same level. And Ara Fell had a remake recently so it should be a little more than the current level imho.

EDIT 2: Also, you added InflamationQuest which is japanese right? Why is there no Seraphic Blue?

[RM2k/2k3] Video Request Thread: How to Bring Video into RM2k/2k3

I know this is quite a bit late, but I really liked this idea of making RPGMaker FMV games. Makes me remember those FMV games (or games which had movie cutscenes), like Privateer 2, Command & Conquer series, The Ripper and others.

I remembered a few RPGMaker games that used movies for cutscenes and some of which I uploaded on my youtube channel if you guys are interested:

* (RM2k) (Brazilian) O Cálice Sagrado by M. Giovanne Link

* (RM2k) (Brazilian) The Drake Legend: River of the Dragons by M. Giovanne Link

* (RM2k) (Italian) Theory of the Order by OldPat

* (RM95) (English) Baldy's Big Day by 0Kelvin

* (RMXP) (Brazilian) Vila do Nevoeiro (Village of the Mist) by Triskal

My favorite of those were the Baldy's Big Day cutscenes, which had 3D Models of the RPGMaker 95 characters. Really cool.

I just want to take a second to say THANK YOU DARKEN for creating your wonderful blog. RPG Maker Historia is a serious trip down memory lane. Back when I first discovered RPG Maker 2002, I downloaded and played EVERYTHING I could get my hands on. For a few years, I played more RPG Maker games than commercial games. I wish I had my hard drive from back then because it would be a treasure trove.

If there's one game I've always wanted to know more about the history of, it's Romancing Walker by Flare. I can find next to nothing about the development of this game on the internet. Where did Flare originally post it? Is Flare still around? I remember hearing that this game was a translation of a Japanese game - but I think this is just a rumor, because there's no evidence of a Japanese version, and all the switches and such are labeled in English. Anyone have any more background about RW?

Hey dethmetal,

Sorry I took so long to reply to you, although you probably already found the answer to your question, but here we go.

I made a post about this on the thread here. I basicly mentioned eplipswitch`s post about the Romancing Walker Japanese version (also known as `With Walker`), and that rm2kfanboy (the guy that basicly translated and remade the graphics of the original game) aparently posted in the same thread. He also mentioned that there was at some point a Romancing Walker 2 (Or With Walker 2) in development and that he even managed to play it, but he aparently lost this version of the game because that was on an old computer he had.

I also uploaded the japanese version here and you can play it through EasyRPG without the Japanese RTP if I`m not mistaken. Although you probably need some japanese reading skills to play this, so good luck.

Oh, and I also have an old link from the Internet Archive that I think it is the old (or what is left of it) FLARE`s homepage. Hope that helps you out.

EDIT:
Some Screenshots from the game:

the machine that BREATHES

Wow, you got an amazing cyberpunk aesthetic there. I'll be definitely looking forward to it.

Hey guys,

Just reuploading Shadows of Evil 4.0 as requested by IllusioMan.

If anyone else still needs a game reuploaded I'll see if I can help. Just send me a message to my mailbox and I'll answer as soon as I can.

I`m also still looking for the latest QHeretic`s Exile demo, mine has 80 maps. If someone else has a more recent version please do share it.

The E is for EasyRPG

Wow, awesome news, hope to see more games made with EasyRPG. It sure is nice to be able to play RPGMaker games from my phone. I can pretty much play it from anywhere.

I also tried some RPGMaker games made from other countries and it worked out pretty well. I was able to play games in english, portuguese, italian, russian and japanese. All of them would normally need some patch or some configuration on my machine, but I played them just fine. Really cool.

Really interested to see how the EasyRPG 1.0.0 will turn out. Thanks for all the hard work!

So basically I realize a lot of the games on the list barely have any coverage or descriptions. I started a project to address that, the goal is to give every game on the archive list some screenshots, a written impression and a 10-30ish minute youtube video. I've made this a fairly automated process, but I still need to make it a regular habit.

https://rpgmakerhistoria.home.blog/

https://twitter.com/RPGMHistoria
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCzy0DxCmuzIUT2BkCOW2Jhg

It's all condensed in a wordpress blog mainly, but the main goal is to document as much as I can so that they become more permanent to google and general web crawlers. We'll see how it goes.

Wow, that`s really awesome Darken. There are a lot of games to cover of course, but I`m sure these great games you`ll be covering will not be forgotten.

I myself have been trying to upload some games on RMArchiv and when I can I also upload a (silent) walkthrough of these games on my channel. I made little progress so far, but one by one at least I show little bits of these games for those who are interested.

Good luck though, because there sure are more games than Archivists.

Consoles & Favourite Games

Well then, I guess I will have to try really hard here not to drop like a thousand games at once...

Dink Smallwood (Yes, this game is on the list), Lord Monarch, Gunz:The Duel (A MMOFPS where the bugs are so deep and profound that made the game have a mechanic not even the developers imagined to be possible) 燕派烈伝~Revelation~ (Yes, a japanese bullet hell. Why? Because I find it really cool).

Dreamcast:
Berserker: Guts Rage, Shenmue II, Spawn: In the Demon's Hand, Cannon Spike, Street Fighter: 3rd Strike, Capcom vs SNK: Millenium Fight 2000, Skies of Arcadia, Dynamite Cop, Powerstone, Evil Twin, Jojo's Venture. (Sorry, no Sonic games)

Game Magazines

Wow, so many cool magazines.

Well, here in Brazil I had access to some very cool magazines too.

CD Expert had some really cool RPG magazines, some of them were smaller though:

Another cool magazine was the Digerati's RPG series:

There was also the Digerati's 'Top Games' Series:

The coolest of the Top Games magazines were the 'Top Games Surpresa', of which had a ton of variety of games, and even when it was just RPGs, it came not only with JRPGs but some were CRPGs / Western RPGs too.
