What are you working on now?
trying to work out stat-free and simplified versions of battle mechanics and stuff for the frog world rpg. if you lose a fight you get your legs broke and have to crawl into a hospital. also i'm considering giving each character a set number of hearts/healthpoints and a small number of skills during battle, which can only be used a set number of times before needing to be recharged or whatever, so getting through a dungeon consists of selecting a particular set of party members and conserving their skills. or something. it really all depends on how much effort this stuff will be to implement so i intend to just throw shit around until some of it sticks.
edchuy's Release Something! X marks the spot! Wrap-Up
Yeah 28 crits is insane dude. It is really cool that you did this. This is a good overview on the entries too!
Incidentally if you're interested in trying to make games then I think RMN has another short contest coming up this month, which is a really good way to make something short and toss ideas around or just get to grips with an engine.

Games and Why You Play Them
well, mog, one of the benefits to holding stuff to some basic standards of competence is that i don't have to scream like a child about elitism and pretentiousness and poseurs lying to themselves about not liking the final fantasy series on every single occasion where someone brings up the idea of encouraging actual creative merit of any type. this is just an offtopic tangent feel free to draw whatever conclusions you like @___~
Games and Why You Play Them
i honestly don't have much of a problem with entertainment for entertainment's sake at all! i am not gonna throw out uh DIE HARD or whatever and i still do play some old snes games despite the fact that they're basically children's toys. but i think it's important to bear in mind just what these things are and to also try to respect genuine quality and originality of vision etc. i don't expect people to give up doing things for fun but i think it's too easy to fall into a rut with this stuff and become like those 40something comics nerds subsisting oin the equivalent of junkfood every day. strive to improve the self....... ~ dwayne johnson "the rock"
Games and Why You Play Them
i don't like games very much so when i download something it's usually out of a uh MORAL OBLIGATION to check out something which appears to have genuine creativity involved rather than a way to have fun or whatever. sometime this can be a nice experience in itself but mostly i regard actually playing games as something of a chore. i am kind of bad with this and there's a ton i've meant to GIVE PROPS TO but never gotten around to it but in terms of what ones i'm at least interested in then it's just ones that seem like they've had more thought/inspiration involved than just trying to rip off whatever stupid horseshit the developer played last week. it's kind of an arbitrary thing to judge but really so many games are so alike and so derivative on every level that it really stands out to see something even marginally different.

Hype and how it affects you
I sometimes post screenshots of what I'm working on because I'm a whore but I always feel gross about it and regret it. Hype is gross!! Don't be gross guys!! Like there's seeking out actual criticism or posting games to where people might like them or just trying to make people aware they exist which is all fine but I think there's a distinction between that and uh MARKETING TACTICS. Heh just gonna release a few carefully chosen screenies to "build up a buzz" as they say. Gotta keep up that brand recognition. Gotta keep my game on the first page. It just seems really ugly and sordid to me. I would rather people just didn't play my games than be attracted to them by some demeaning superficial horseshit because anyone who cares about that shit is probably awful anyway and fuck them. I still remember when cactus squid would release his games on G&D and get completely ignored while some awful dork was bumping his final fantasy fangame to six pages long. I know there's a couple of people who would see that and think HEH JUST MORE PROOF MARKETING IS IMPORTANT but given a choice between self-respect and a few more people playing some fucking videogame I like to think I'd choose the former.
Frog World RPG
Whoa dude that is insanely detailed crit, thank you! :)
I agree with basically everything you've said! I am not entirely happy with the version uploaded right now and have changed things around considerably for the current version, including more interactions, custom music, a different tone, a Frog Naming and Educating system at the start (select a college for your frog to attend. choose life experiences for you frog) and a mouse-based movement and interaction system rather than the clumsier keyboard movement one. Also yeah I am gonna have a kind of loose generic plot about fetching the seven whatevers because it's just the kind of arbitrary structuring device needed to stop these things from just being aimless wanderfests.
Incidentally the response to the lizard determines whether he joins your party later in the game. I like the idea of having these really insignificant little details dotted all over that open up new areas and so on. I'm not sure if I'll keep that part in the current version, which is slightly more surreal.
Thanks again for the comments, I appreciate them.

Collaborative Projects
I am collaborating with a guy from gamingw right now who's doing the Frog World RPG soundtrack. I'm enjoying it a lot because we are both kind of working autonomously, like he sends me really bizarre UNGAMELIKE experimental stuff and I kind of improvise the game to fit the music and it's going in a really neat direction I would never have thought of by myself. I think this is more fun than trying to bend someone else to your ideas or farming out game sections to people. I think it'd be better in general to think of a collaboration as just that and to maybe base it on what COULD BE NEAT or working with people who seem interesting rather than basing it all on mapping experience etc. Just being less precious about stuff overall. Maybe not but I like the idea.
