Heartache 101 ~Sour into Sweet~

v0.77 is out.
There was a game-crashing bug in the last version when the player visits the Beach, so it should be fixed now.

While I was at it, I added a header command to designate custom story evente as repeatable. So it's now possible to make your own sort of generic events. (though you still can't simulate some things, like mental notes, etc)

Other than that, nothing new in this version.

@Marrend
I confess, I'm peeking ahead at the tachie before trying Emiko in-game. Yikes, how many watermelons has she got under her shirt? Two wouldn't be enough to produce that topography.

However, it seems to me that one could cause a some kind of condition, like CONDITION = 4 DONE, in order just to get the event. At the end of the train event, have a CONDITION = 4 NOT DONE to re-enable the event. Well, it's a theory that I haven't at all tested, but if it should work...

It would only work if events could be made to be repeatable. As it stands now, no custom story event can be played twice.

I've decided to relegate myself to testing other people's custom content, helping with custom content (graphics, story, what-not), or just generally being the resident expert at the creation of custom content.

It's definitely helpful having you around to field questions, and I'm sure others will appreciate having testers for their content, too.

I've never had a character arrange a date either, but I suspect it might be one of those things that's unlocked with the number of dates set up by the player character. As a quick example, I think it might take three or so dates before the character begins suggesting eating out (somebody may correct me on this, though).

Eating out can happen from the second date on, but it's a random occurrence.

@Nekochi
By the way, how do you get a date that's arranged by the girl? I've never been able to. Is it arranged by phone or in person or what? (I kind of wanted to know if I should bother writing responses for those situations for Ran, Torako, and Yumemi.)

The girl needs to be in a Love state exactly (not Lovesick) and the player either needs to have a date set up with another girl that day, or it needs to be Saturday. Even then there's lots of chance involved.

Speaking of which, does his school have a name? Cause it would make sense if at one point one of them said something like, "Judging by your uniform, I'd say you went to, blahblah, right?" And if they knew what school he went to, it would mean they could surprise meet him after school.

I neglected to give the school a name. I hope that doesn't create conflicts for content creators!

Even if it was possible to just enable train encounters, if I recall my help file correctly, getting a phone number from a character disables train encounters with that character.

That's true. (I made that generic train encounter in the first place to provide more opportunities for the player to get phone #'s he doesn't yet have)

I'm uncertain if it's necessary to use OTHER slots to simulate the "chance meeting on a train" situation you might be aiming for, but you may want to be prepared for that contingency.

But the problem is how to allow the generic actions, such as "Ask name", "Ask phone #" and "Just chat". I suppose you could sort of simulate it with your own custom story event...if only the event were repeatable. Would custom repeatable events be useful to you guys? The functionality for that is already in the system, but it hasn't been tested.

flowerthief, you realize I'm saying this because Emiko is not done with the "medium build girl" that everyone else has been using? Well, there's Animetor's various postings, but Emiko differs from that style as well. Ergo, half the fun is the mystery of what she looks like.

Gotcha :)

About the upload problem, I think I found a simple solution that allows real users to upload files of any type while being mostly hidden to spammers :)

@Marrend
I guess that's true, huh? In that sense maybe the screenshots here and on the website do a disservice.

@Nekochi
There's not a way to do that, I'm afraid. But if characters that go to a different school are going to be popular among content creators, maybe there needs to be?

Oh man everyone is having problems uploading. This one looks like another file type issue. The file type issues can be solved by allowing uploads of any file type, but if I do that then I have to implement user accounts or else anyone could upload nasty files. User accounts isn't hard to do. The problem is maintenance. For forever I would have spammers trying to register spam accounts, not to mention people forgetting their passwords, and everything that goes with running a site that has user accounts. Why is there never a headache-free solution :(

It's pretty cool that you figured out how to do that. But the roofs....

Thank you for the feedback.

Hmm, although it wasn't a negative for you, I do want a players to start getting non-generic endings on their second playthrough at the least. Are other players having a similar experience? Is it still the attribute checks, or is it simply that the story routes are long? (I know that Akari's route in particular is rather long, but I hoped that would be ameliorated by the fact that you only need to pump up a single attribute if you're going after her. Ditto with Tsubasa)

As for whether the girls' behavior is consistent with Japanese culture, probably not. I'm not Japanese myself so it would be impossible for me to write from their perspective. However, I have spent time in Japan, have had lots of interactions with Japanese people, not to mention have played tons of Japanese games in this genre, so hopefully it's not completely off either. There is at least one character loosely based on a real Japanese person, and at least one character loosely based on a real non-Japanese person I knew from high school. I suppose it's probably an odd mix.

You could say that the project stakes everything on the assumption that high school life in its essentials isn't all that different from culture to culture, and that users who expand onto the game by writing new characters and new story aren't and shouldn't be expected to be able to write consistent with Japanese culture.

Allrighty, it's up.

Nekochi, if you're around, have you tried to upload Junko to the website, or shall I do so?

I think the other attempts may also have been timeouts even though you didn't always see an error. Iirc the max execution time my host has set is 30 seconds. For a case like this I think all we can do is have me be the one to upload it through the back end. Let me know whenever you'd like me to do that.

^ A teeny tiny thing:
Story 10, Branch B in Ruri's file. Should be
"True, she wasn't too thrilled about getting it."

That was actually about as far as I got last time, since the way I built my stats closed me off to all four of their storylines. I'll have to play differently next time.
