What makes a game rate 5 out of 5 stars?

Honestly, I am not a fan of rating systems that are any more complex than a binary metric -- thumbs up or thumbs down. Is it important that there be a distinction between 1 star and 2 stars? Would you recommend to a friend a game that you rated 2 stars? I doubt it.

When ratings are an aggregate of many critics or many users, I like them even less, because aggregate rating systems are biased towards the mainstream. A niche game created for a niche audience could be exactly what certain players are looking for, but because it isn't enjoyable to a wide swath of players, it gets a low aggregate rating. I don't like to see quality equated with popularity.

RMN sucks 5

I think it took me 45 minutes maybe? Or maybe it was longer. I did get stuck temporarily here and there, but eventually found a way to progress.

One suggestion I have is to make the enemies flash red (or any color) when they are hit. That was the one obvious thing lacking from the good ol' Zelda feel. I'm excited about this project :)

^Yep, you got it.

Hmm, since the BxB feature is getting used, I'm wondering now if I shouldn't try to add a GxB mode. It would require me to write an alternate prologue, alternate generic endings, and a host of other accommodations, but there might be enough interested female players out there to make it worth it, maybe?

The final boss is Solid Snake! Does he have camouflage attacks?

Testing

GENDER does default to female, of course.

If you still can't get it work, show your profiles file and I'll take a look.

RMN sucks 5

Ah, sorry, I meant 1 to bring up the status screen (not SHIFT). On my joystick, no buttons are mapped to that by default.

It turns out I was mental after all. I didn't see the bomb bag there on the screen lol. After that, no major problems getting to the end of the demo. Although I lost the ability to use my sword somewhere along the way. I think it was when I equipped the first fairy? Not sure. Had to rely solely on the candle for combat from there on out.

Anyway, cool stuff! It definitely preserves that old-school Zelda feeling, and it's refreshing to play an action adventure once in awhile instead of all these slow-paced RPGs. Also, I commend you for adding in your own ideas instead of just doing a remake. If it were only a remake, I wouldn't be interested in playing it, but since there are brand new maps and brand new puzzles etc, I am.

edit: I was gonna suggest a way to fix the problem of how when the player is at the edge of the screen and turns around, the new map doesn't get triggered (he has to step forward first, then go back), but the fix involves editing RGSS...and it looks like you used RM2k3 for this! That's crazy.

It looks cute until you get close to it. One round of combat later, half your party is KO'ed. And of course the thing has 100,000 hit points.

NoJoker, thanks for the feedback :)
So far nobody has made a male character. BxB has only been possible since the day before yesterday. Let me know if you have any problems making one.

There may be some inconsistencies, like the load screen and status screen showing a number for "Girls met". That number will go up whether a character is male or female, but I don't know what to do about that now; if I change it to "Characters met" then it won't fit on the screen.

Some day I'd like to make a game system like this for GxB audiences, but that's looking far into the future.

^I suppose a good thing about this is that it might stop trolls from posting in the project thread. (Adon237's post wasn't all trollish, but still)

GUI suggestions?

I'm looking to supply a GUI to aid users in the customization part of my project. The customization involves the users doing a lot of typing, so I'm gonna need text edit fields, text input boxes, and things like that. Can someone point me in the direction of where I can find some Ruby code that I can use for this?

Ideally, I wanted the GUI to be part of RPG Maker XP so that I can integrate it with the game itself, which is an RPG Maker XP game. But I've not been able to find working scripts for graphical user text input and editing, so I kind of suspect that there are none.

Plan B is to use plain old Ruby to create a separate executable. Anyone want to suggest where I can get the suitable libraries or gems or whatever it is I need to build a GUI with a minimum of fuss?
