I'm really starting to see why so many people hate people. And all it took to open my eyes was posting a comment on a youtube channel. Who knew?
Try being a teacher.
Middle/High schoolers are the perfect medium for one to get in touch with their inner rage. Most days/discussions in the classroom often devolve into Youtube-esque comment section environments. Many students will try and troll you face to face on any given day.

Speed doesn't raise with levels, still.
Thank god. I get so OCD when it comes to the min maxing. I remember doing a low level FF6 playthrough where the average level of the entire character cast was 9 or 10 or something by the end of the game. That way, I could dinosaur forest farm all of my stats to perfection.

Hah, oh look. Its the skill that single-handedly won the game for me on my first playthrough of FFT (back when it was called Lightning Stab). Orlandu and Excalibur... *sigh* Way too strong.

What needs to be in a Final Fantasy fangame?
I actually think that the mainstay tropes/names you mentioned are the only real things that make a Final Fantasy game "authentic". Considerable efforts to reinvent gameplay have been made with each Final Fantasy game since 7 in order to keep the series fresh and novel (to varying degrees of success). This is in stark contrast to 1-6 which, outside of a few core gameplay systems, are arguably quite similar, both conceptually and visually.
Maybe you should try and add something new, modern or at least foreign to the FF franchise into your game?
Aside from that... maybe someone from your cast needs to die and join the likes of Minwu, Leo, Tellah, Aerith and Reddas.
