Contract Musicians & Artists: When taking a commission, what descriptions and references work best for you?

Hi everyone! It's been a while.

I've been kinda pondering this one recently, and I'm looking for ideas. When commissioning artists in the past for various game assets, I'm never sure what kind of references are most useful for the contractor. For characters I've just stuck with worded descriptions of style & attitude, as well as a few key details, and occasionally some reference photos (often RL fashion). I try to avoid direct comparisons to existing media, but maybe that'd be helpful. But I don't know if there might be a better approach!

With music, I'm even less sure - I've never contracted music, and I can imagine describing a mood and tone and speed, but is there any other references that might be useful? Is it useful to list specific pieces that are similar to what I want, or is that too much or difficult to work with?

If you've contracted people before, what do you think? If you're a contractor, what do you prefer, and what doesn't work?

Deving vs. Gaming

I think playing various games for ideas & inspiration can be good - you can find new pieces of games you like and invent new ways to re-interpret them, or jump off them when making totally different games.

However, gamedev is a very time-intensive hobby, so you'll definitely end up sacrificing game-playing time to make games. And it is really important to go out and experience life in other ways - meet friends and people, see new places, and generally explore - because those ideas will all come back to you and inspire you to make games that aren't just inspired by other games, but are inspired by life!

Tell me more about Ib, Yume Nikki & my precious horror games

I don't play a ton of horror games, but I have always pondered about how these small cult hits (Yume Nikki, Ib) seem to have very quiet authors who don't talk about their game much. It's possible that I just haven't looked much, but it certainly seems that way. It kinda helps build the mystery around those games even more! It was super surprising to see so much chatter around Yume Nikki's recent anniversary and re-release.

On the flip-side, accha is an absolute sweetheart <3

What are you thinking about right now?

I use OBS a lot for grabbing gifs and stuff - although I don't know what the best video editing software is. Camtasia can handle some of that for you but I think there are better options.

And that mug Caz <3 your gf seems like a sweetie

What are you jamming to?

Played this game last weekend and I've had this jam in my head since

I have no idea what I'm doing tbh
