Do RPGs need a story?

^ This.

You could even go even more bare-bones than Mario or Zelda and have the objective "Get from point A to point B" or something and you could still make a game.
Said titles actually did have story. It just was backstory.

I didn't say they didn't have a story. I said they have a bare-bones story.

I kinda doubt the discussion the OP wanted to have was "Let's nitpick down to the exact line between a game with a story and no story at all." The point was that RPGs are often used to tell stories, some of them very complex. Others have very little in the way of story or dialog but are carried by excellent mechanics and gameplay. And I think that's cool; both are great.

Too hard?

Yeah, Steal would have worked there, but like I said, still a great game and quite an accomplishment for just a week's work :D

Also romance is the hardest thing to write believably, in my opinion XD

Too hard?

I updated to build 1.2 and continued from there. I beat the optional bosses (unless there was more than the second Cerberus fight and the Demon Prince Clone), got all ten not-so-tiny medals (:3) and then beat the main boss, clocking in at an hour and forty minutes on my last save, though I'm also the type of gamer who tries to poke and prod every nook and cranny, so my play time's probably a lot higher than the average player.

Overall I very much liked the game. A nice light story with some great battle mechanics and excellent mapping.

If I had to list shortcomings, I'd say that while Natalie's BP system was really cool, actually accumulating the BP in any manner other than her 100 TP move (Grand Fist, or something similar?) felt like a little bit of a waste, with not nearly the damage payoff for the turn investment in raising the BP. Also the Yaoi was a bit weak in my opinion, especially since we don't get Noah, the second half of the main pairing, until half of the game is already over.

These are ultimately minor nitpicks, though, and I want to say again that I found this very solid and really enjoyed playing it. Thanks for the great game :D

Do RPGs need a story?

No. No they don't need a story, strictly speaking. You could even go even more bare-bones than Mario or Zelda and have the objective "Get from point A to point B" or something and you could still make a game.

However, I personally prefer a story. My favorite part of an RPG is the characters; learning about them, watching them interact, and watching them grow on their journey. It's not required by any means, but it's a huge plus to a lot of people :D

Who are you to tell me how to kill slimes ...... :)
and yes, it was the last slime. Not only did it look like it regenerated it's HP it then got to hit me with a powerful slam in the face :)

Haha, glad to hear it. :D

Nudity in Games

I have no problem with nudity in games, as long as it makes sense in context, of course.

For the official site ruling on it, this thread discusses that in more detail.

An RM Venture

Cool, thanks! :D I'm determined to enter one of these contests soon!

Too hard?

I've just beat Cerberus and that puts me at 32 minutes so far. I'm finding the game somewhat challenging but not frustrating. The characters have a good variety of useful moves that keep battles interesting. I'll try to beat the game this evening to give you a full difficultly and time rundown.

I noticed a few small errors. First, I'm not sure if Natalie's Channel ability actually increases BP. It didn't seem to, but I may be mistaken. Also, both her Flame Fist and Freezing Fist claim to do Fire damage in their descriptions. Also, many of the signposts in the game don't seem to be read-able.

You've got a really solid and fun game here so far and I'm interested to see how it ends :D
