Dungeon Masters basically play the role of every NPC and monster....some like to add a personal NPC to the players' party, but it's not assumed that it's going to happen. I generally don't unless the party is missing someone to fulfill a key role in combat or something.
Wait are we Role-Playing like people do on the forums, because if that is what it is that'll be easy like:
Nick-Nick strolled down the street laughing with glee.
Bob-bob looked at Nick and laughed at him
Charlie-Charlie waited around and saw Bob laughing at Nick
except more detail and probably with stats.
I'm going to listen to those podcasts now. I have a headset so voice chat isn't bad for me.
You would be our Dungeon Master right
Edit: I have some questions
1.Does the DM have a character
2.Where they just pulling the story out of thin air or was it an actual Adventure Bookmade by Wizard's Coast.
3.I found a character sheet template, I'm definatley going to need some help
4. I found this online Dice Roller if we need it http://www.wizards.com/dnd/dice/dice.htm
I don't know whether that one was a published (or to-be-published) or made for them, but it probably wasn't just pulled out of thin air--that guy was a pro DM, and I can just about guarantee that he prepared something beforehand. Actually, I remember him mentioning he was reading from something, but I don't know if it was official or homebrew. I will be running something homebrew, though it will likely be informed by other campaigns.
As for the dice roller, the issue isn't so much finding a way to roll dice (heck, I could make a program in about five minutes that would do it for me), it's doing it a networked environment so everyone can see everyone else's die rolls. OpenRPG has that functionality, and programming it into MIRC takes about five seconds, but I doubt any voice chat dealies would make it easy. I have found an option that'll work(this website does it, and apparently if two people use the same password they'll see the same dice rolls), but it's not optimal.
Anyway, we're not there yet. I've got some glimmerings of a low level campaign (with room for future adventures), but it's still all cloudy and needs definition yet.
Like I said, if you want I can just make you a character once you settle on a concept, if you don't feel up to going through character creation yourself, so no worries there.
I'm interested, I was going to start playing at the advent of the new ruleset, but I couldn't find anyone else who was interested. I'm at GMT +10, is that a problem (I'm really bad at calculating time zone stuff)? I have played PC D&D before, so I guess the basic concept wouldn't be so different.
That's fifteen hours ahead of EST (we're at at GST -5, right)?
Also, DMs sometimes add people to the party? I suppose that makes sense, but I hope that they strip them down into a pure utility character, skill-wise. When the DM tries to 'save the day' it almost always sucks.

I'm EDT: Eastern Daylight Time
Also here's my character and concept Shadowtext
Jim Darkmagic (only kidding)
Hadrian Hawkeye
Human-Ranger
Concept: Hadrian was a ranger tracking down criminals that took refugee in his forests before coming across a band of adventurers and joining their groups.
You can beef up the rest that's all I got at this time. Thanks again andwhat is our adventure band name?

author=Craze link=topic=1335.msg20833#msg20833 date=1213955168It's not a practice I'm that fond of, either, but some people prefer to play that way.

Patient #14--could be. It sounds like 8:00 PM-12:00 AM for me would be like 12:00 AM-4:00 AM for you, for example. If you're up at that time anyway it's not a problem, but it's all a question of if you'd be able to make sessions. If I ran sessions during the day on Saturday or Sunday it might work, but that depends on everyone else.
How bout in the morning? Then people who are behind it would be the evening for them
I would have to be awake mornings for that to be an option. Still, I might be able to make that sacrifice if the others can be talked into it. Guys? I haven't heard from most of you since you first expressed interest. Any character ideas, scheduling thoughts, naughty haikus?
Also, Nick, for your ranger do you want him to be an archer or a two-weapon melee fighter?

Well, I work both Saturday and Sunday nights, but if you did it on your Friday night, would that be Saturday morning for me? I can do that, but if more people can't do friday nights, I don't mind sitting out.

I want my character to be an Archer, I want to go off my usual sword wielding knight. Also thank you Shadowtext. I'm not sure how I live in the Eastern United States so how many hours are you ahead or behind me by. I have nothing to do this Summer vacation though we need a certain date, so we can check are schedules.
I got the 4e PHB a while back and been meaning to read it. I'll go for the Human Fighter, because that's what I started with D&D. Probably weilding a big stick because shields are for people who think AC matters. :P
Friday nights would be good for me (except this upcoming one). I'm usually home with nothing interesting happening.

Okay, so that's a Striker and a Defender. Other players, take note: we should probably have a Leader and a Controller yet.
If I'll be playing, I've done some of the stuff on my character sheet. Wasn't completely sure about skills or attributes, though, so I didn't fill them in. If no-one else has taken these skills, I'll take Arcana (naturally), Diplomacy, History and Religion. I'll take Ritual Caster as my 1st level feat. I don't care about the rest, but at what level do we pick level 1 spells?
Skills-wise, don't worry so much about making sure the party fills every skill. I can tailor around missing skills. It's just party roles that'll be slightly more difficult to work around if we're missing any.
In the case of games I run, I go with Point Buy or Standard Array (since the standard array can be bought with Point Buy, they're easily compatible). If you don't have the PHB, the standard array is 16, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10.
Point Buy's a bit more difficult. You start with 10, 10, 10, 10, 10, 8. Then you get 22 points to distribute how you want amongst the others--the eight costs one point to raise to 9, or two to raise to 10, then afterwards you add the standard cost for any given value:
Score - Cost
--------------
11 - 1
12 - 2
13 - 3
14 - 5
15 - 7
16 - 9
17 - 12
18 - 16
I prefer point buy / standard array because of my long standing feud with the Random Number God.

Yeah, fair enough. I guess my stats should be something like this, then?
Str = 10
Dex = 13
Con = 11
Int = 16
Wis = 14
Cha = 12

Shadowtext, I would like to be a part of this. Preferably as a player as I am already DMing a small test campaign with friends.
For the record, MapTool is amazing. Unfortunately, it requires external graphics to make decent maps. Fortunately, RPG Maker graphics can be ported to it really simply :> I've been using RMVX to make maps, exporting them as images (through a script) and loading them into MapTool for campaigns.
I think MapTool has built in voice-chat, too.
I am pretty familiar with the way 4thEdition works, and would be happy to help anyone having issues with it.
Also, Shadowtext, in my experience, I have found Sunday afternoons (noon-5ish) is usually the globally accepted best time for a campaign.
The one thing about D&D I always hated was leaving a session and having to wait a week to play again though :D I am all about instant gratification lol.

This stuff is all great, except it caters to D&D 3.5 Edition which I don't think is what Shadowtext wants to play (and personally I don't either)
The problem with 3.5e that I have is that after the years, there is just -so- much. The core books (PHB, DMG, and MM) are about 5% of the entire available 3.5e content. From additional races, monsters, classes, prestige classes, gods, divinities, items, magic systems, etc. so much that the game has become bloated, and a constant "Let me check the rulebook because nobody at the table is familiar with any of the rules I use." kind of game.
