FF7 REMAKE. IT'S A THING.
Posts
The only thing I'm worried about is, when they take old games and revamp them for a newer system, they lose the things that gave them their charm. I'm definitely not crazy about the story being touched up, or tampered with, in any way.
Maybe I'm just being old-fashioned, I don't know, but remakes always make me a bit nervous.

If there's no way to play ff7 hd with the original ps1 soundtrack I will not be a very happy camper. One of the things I love about the FF7 ost is how distinctive it sounds from other games with its synth sound samples that also makes it cohesive with itself. Replacing that with a proper orchestra kills my nostalgia nerd needs.
Maybe there's a happy middle ground but I'm pretty pessimistic on this. e: I am a grognard on this, to be clear.

I'll just say this. If the game doesn't please you, or you think that the game doesn't feel right because one little thing changed, there's always the original you can play. Things will change, that's a fact. I myself honestly welcome any changes, as long as it's not too crazy or dumb. The game needs it badly in a lot of areas, let them do what they need to do I say (again, as long as they don't do anything too dumb)!
That's just my two cents on this and the internet people constantly worrying about (and/or bitching about) things changing like they tend to do with remakes and the like. ^^;

C'mon guys, instead of quarreling over whether it'll be good or not... let's talk about scenes we wanna see in glorious HD!
-Honeybee Inn honeygirls
-Honeybee Inn hot tub scene
-Cloud romancing Don Corneo in drag... with voice acting
-Cait Sith
-Red XIII disguised in a sailor's uniform on the Cargo Ship
-Inhaling for five straight minutes until your lungs explode and then breathing it all into Priscilla at once when she needs CPR on the Lower Junon beach
-Jumping on dolphins to reach Upper Junon immediately afterwards
-Barret casting Bad Breath
-Palmer dancing around and then getting hit by a van
-"This guy are sick" voice acted
-The play you get suckered into performing in while on a date in Gold Saucer
-Tifa vs. Scarlet slap-fight on the barrel of the Junon Cannon
+
-Squat challenge.
-The higher floors of the Shinra Building covered in blood. President Shinra impaled by the Masamune. Also Midgar Zolom #2 impaled on a tree.
-The Fort Condor battles.
-Taking Tifa's panties from her dresser.
-The accidental porn scene where Tifa blows Cloud in the wheelchair.
-The Moogle arcade game.
-Warming up by fidgeting.
-Diving underwater, screen fades in, Emerald Weapon's in your face.

Agreed.
Luckily the remake is pretty much GUARANTEED to be musically and visually superior to the original, so that's not much of a risk.
When you apply that logic to the story... things get more sticky and arbitrary. I can very easily see the director imposing changes to increase continuity with the sequels... but that runs the risk of distracting from the original narrative, which was great in its own right. I honestly hope they mostly leave the script alone, and don't let the characters veer off track with Nomura's pseudo-philosophical bullshit.
(With that being said, he's already confirmed the cross-dressing scene, so I have some hope. xD)
Uhmmm... If uematsu's not participating (I don't think he is) I don't believe the score's that much guaranteed to be superior...
I'm happy with the original game as it is, so I don't really think of this remake as being an improvement on anything... it's just updating it for contemporary tastes, but that doesn't mean it's going to be superior. I mean, obviously the graphics are technically superior, but they will still just look like regular Squeenix fare. (I don't know what I'm trying to say XD... I've never wanted a remake.)

Which I don't think he is. Sadly. :<
Ideally we'd have an Uematsu/Yusanori team-up like in Chrono Trigger. =3

I am legit excited and cannot stop smiling. My face hurts, guys. I mean, I hope they don't mess with it too much but damn, I called this shit years ago.
Word. I am so down for this.

Final Fantasy has continuity now?

Hallelujah! Nomura confirms they'll be changing the gameplay. I'm glad SE has the self-awareness to admit that the vanilla ATB system is outdated and boring. Now I'm really interested in the remake.

Well, that's disappointing. I don't care for twitch gameplay mechanics in my RPGs, in general, which is probably they way they are going.
Well, that's why you don't put an art director in charge of a massive game development project. You'd think they'd have learned their lesson after XII, XIII and that fiasco that lead to XIV being reborn.
Guys, guys, guys... All they're saying is that they don't want to do the 'all in a line' thing. That doesn't mean it can't be a case of area of effect movement type stuff, like in Suikoden III, where it was still turn based but the battle field itself was an environment that the characters would move around on - automatically. Think Chrono Trigger, for example. I'd be down for that~
Hell, there are a lot of ways they could do it that wouldn't be twitch but still be dynamic enough that you're not kept in a line. It's too soon to eat your hats.

Interesting. I won't lie- I do really love the classic ATB system used in so many RPGs, but it'll be interesting to see what direction they take the new combat and how they intend to keep the game feel intact.
More exciting is what this could mean for the Materia system, which always desperately needed fleshing out.
don't mind me, just responding to random snippets from the thread with my irrelevant opinion
You could get the worst people but they can do it right, likewise you could get George Lucas and end up with a Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones. Also, just because it's this guy or that guy is working on it, doesn't mean there won't be the right people involved somehow or somewhere along the line. (e.g. Metroid Prime, Metal Gear Rising, DmC) But for me to say that is to admit that there's such a thing as "right people" and "wrong people" and I'm not convinced there is such a thing because from where I'm sitting it seems like anyone is capable of putting out crap, despite the vision and talent supposedly attributed to their other works. Makes me wonder how much luck is involved.
Certainly there is confirmation bias at work, if the game turns out to suck/rule it will be "oh, it's because that guy I hate/like was working on it" like anyone could possibly have any idea what was going on behind the scenes.
I guess things like character design/artwork don't apply, since that's something that's definitely noticeable.
But I remember almost nothing about his personality from the original game, other than maybe a few times where he seemed like a jerk or I wasn't even sure. He was practically a faceless protagonist that just happened to talk at certain points and shrugged often.
parts aren't even translatable to the serious HD tone they seem to be going for: Nanaki dressed as a human walking on two feetI'm sorry but that part was completely dumb, even by PS1 standards.
cross-dressing Cloud, snowboardingI'd argue that those are potentially translatable, although they might decide to take them out. Snowboarding might be replaced with a snowmobile or some other kind of vehicle.
Oh wow. So it might end up being style over substance, like Advent Children was?Umm, that might be the case regardless of who's working on the game. I don't get this baseless projecting of how much a game will suck/rule depending on who's making it as though their previous work is some kind of divine contract.

I'm mostly curious what Cloud they write in for FF7. He's been rewritten quite a few times since his original debutThat might explain why Cloud in Dissidia was like an all new character to me. But I think that had more to do with the fact that he wasn't voiced original. I find Cloud's (I should say Dissidia Cloud's) personality so peculiar that it's hard to see how I could possibly have ever known who he was before he appeared in a game with voice acting and more detailed models.

There were some people worried that materia would be removed, but it's such a huge part of the game story that that's unlikely to be the case. It'll probably get a huge upgrade. Maybe choices on how to grow materia (Do I put more points into the AOE or damage? Increase Luck or Strength Stats? Do I aim for getting the second teir of spell as fast as I can or mess with increasing the chance of effects triggering?) That would be cool!
Also, I imagine they'll edit equipment usage. Maybe even Level Breaks. It's kinda exciting to think about what they could do right with the system to make it even more interesting that it already is.

Do you really think people will pay for the exact same game with better graphics, especially considering how far video games have come?
yes.

I actually concur with kentona on this one. FFIV proves that this is the case - the game has been remade so many times on so many systems but it still sells quite well considering. So, yeah, new graphics (especially ones that breathe a new life into the characters and world around them) makes for a hot seller.
That said, as already said by the lead designer of the remake, they're not just upgrading the graphics. It's scary but ultimately, even if it goes wrong, it was a thing they tried and hell, I'll still play it. If only to shaky my head at their mistakes and point out the good things.
I just hope they don't mess with the story itself too much.
