This doesn't look like 2K3! (and if it is kudos to making it look like it's not!)

I'm going to go out on a limb and say that that characters powers are ice based. :)
I like the blocks on the person's head over the multiple bars from SEB1, will be interesting to see how it plays out!

I'm completely against that decision. There'll be no real way to discuss and advertise releases, and even if freshly updated games get 'bumped' to the top of the list on the front page, I feel too many games will be neglected and ignored.

The changes to the game pages sound great, but getting rid of the Game Releases forum sounds like an absolutely terrible idea. I'll be blunt and state that whoever came up with that must've had a screw loose at the time.

You claim this'll bring games back to being the focus of this community, but I feel that by getting rid of the Game Releases forum in it's entirety will have the opposite effect on a gigantic scale. I wouldn't be suprised if many long term members stopped visiting the forums.

I can't speak for this site, but from my experiences at GW and RMXP.org, sometimes the "old and long term members" had become so elite and comfortable in the environment that new people were dissuaded from doing anything because of it.

If we're striving to find new blood instead of just rehashing the existing, maybe something to shake up and put everyone on a level playing field isn't such a bad idea?

But then that brings to the table the belief that having a functional, active, exciting main site page and a bustling forum based community are mutually exclusive, and they're not. You can have both!

Right now we have a semi busy forum with the same games always bubbling to the top, but new uploads of games in the Games section are summarily ignored.

Right now there is a problem and we need a solution. Talking and talking and talking hasn't gotten us anywhere, looks like some action is being forced onto us, and a LOT of people are pretty scared.

I'm a newbie, so change doesn't scare me as much as it does a lot of the long term members and people who have been around on the RM scene for a long time.

RMN3 Changes (EVERYONE READ)

Is it really going to be that much different?

You'll be able to leave comments and post reviews on games, there's no reason we can't have "Newest Reviews" and other "Newest X" content blocks where you can follow what you're interested in.

If you look at the forum right now it's just a list of the most recently "bumped" games, and it pretty accurately reflects the most recently updated as well. Honestly you can think of the game listing as a specialized forum with preview images and extra options.

Looking at the projects now the "comments" section is nothing but replies to the synopsis of your project... maybe it's just me but it seems that they're pretty close to the same.

I can see why that might feel more empty, but I think it's worth a try. The method we're using now is the standard one for basically every other RM site I've been on, I don't think it's a terrible idea for us to try something new.

Right now the thing that's being neglected is the Games section. Most people see it as a tack-on where you can upload your game and screenshots for Maker points, but most threads don't even link to their game pages!

Either can (and will/is being) abused, but having the duplicate functions is kinda silly.

I think a better focus would be how to better integrate the forums and the game sections; maybe like doing reviews in threads and being able to link threads with a tag to a game project? You could link a "Resource" thread to your project if you took resources from it, a "Review" thread could be linked by the reviewer once approved, etc.

It's always a bit scary to try something new, and not everyone will like it or be willing to adapt, but isn't everyone saying "Get away from the same old fantasy setting!" "Learn to make a new story!" "Be original!" "Too cliche!" over and over and over about games?

Let's follow that example and give something new a go to see if it will work. Unless we're okay being just another tired cliche.

@Feld: The reason there are people 'in charge' is that sometimes tough decisions need to be made that a lot of people aren't going to like. I'm not sure if this is the right decision or not, but this initiative wouldn't happen any other way.

RMN3 Changes (EVERYONE READ)

Okay I posted this elsewhere but it belongs here too:

Part of the problem is the same most places have; we're mostly a community of developers. Developers who give "high quality" feedback and are making their own projects.

We should focus less on thread and long reviews and more on getting PLAYERS recruited. The new RMN3 focus announced today where games will be featured not in vague threads is a great opportunity for us to make this site 2 sided:

1. The developers who make the games, share ideas, help each other, and converse
2. The players who play the games, hopefully talk about their experiences, and converse

The biggest "motivation" for any developer is really people saying "Hey, I played your game and want to see more!"

One can say a true sign of success is really if the audience enjoys it, not if your group of peers does. World of Warcraft is highly criticized by other MMO developers for being simple and not bring much new to the table, but you can NOT argue with the insane success they've had, showing that just because the experts think you're dull or unoriginal it doesn't mean that the audience agrees. *cough*moviecritics*cough*

Seeing what kinds of people don't like and do like your games can also help you judge what you're doing at a higher level. Are only the fanatics and masochists interested in your titles while the casual gamer gives up after 5 minutes? There are lessons from experience that theory and talking just won't give you.

Questions you always wanted to ask other members, but felt too lazy or awkward to do so.

Whoa. That is pretty cool. I wish I could get my significant other to be more interested in games, but he prefers toying with architecture programs most of the time. Oh well, I s'pose some would argue it is more "productive" than mapping RM games, haha.

Yeah, I'm lucky my wife is an artist and likes games. Free art!

It's also fun to work with her since she doesn't care about mechanics or story as long as they're fun, so we never bump heads over creative decisions (I rarely question her character designs or the art style she chooses).

Creative clashes are why I don't think I could ever work with other people; I'm too used to total freedom in my hobby. :)

How was everyone's New Year's Eve?

Pretty dull, just sat around working in RMVX actually.

Also, our "Production team" is two members, me and my wife. We just have a name because it sounds cooler and you can put it on your games and they look more professional.

"Anamei Productions" is also a funny play on "anime" and our user names (Anaryu and Yaoumei).

What does it take for you to work on your games?

I mentioned this in IRC but you'd already gone AFK!

C'mon Max, it's just simple calculation! :'(

My next game will be DotIntegral and DotDerivative ;D

I'm doomed. :V

I got to about level 16 on my second try (after I understood the mechanics) but that is about as far as I think I'll ever be able to go. :)

Anaryu, I tried playing Gravity but it gave me this error:

We discussed this in IRC; I'm not sure how to fix it since hima's suggestion wasn't the issue. I'd just ignore the entry since it's going to be back-burnered until I learn more about designing platformer levels. :)

Release Something! V - Release Thread

Gravity Demo

Gravity is an in-progress platformer, the demo is fairly short and is mostly a tech demo with some of the early levels and powers. All powers exist and are finished in the game, but you can't get to the locations where you can pick them up yet.

Note: Re-uploaded at 9:30pm on 12/21/2008 to deal with bug when placing battery capsule on charging platform.
