Originally I wrote the same thing, about the monsters being balanced and whatnot. Then I remembered TALOS. And of course, who can forget. HACKZILLA. Hackzilla is probably responsible for more deaths in DQ8 than the final boss himself.
TBH though, these guys weren't broken, they were just encountered at the wrong time, and also because you strayed off the beaten path!

I want the player to literally get lost exploring things, find a secret cave and get killed by some ridiculously broken monster. Well not exactly, but you get my point.
Man i really like this. (I still like to see where I'm going) but I get lost on purpose, just so I can find a secret cave and get killed by the broken monster.
This is what made Dragon Quest 8 so freaking great :D

Balance currency and items with dungeon crawlers? Must they really have either a town or a merchant?
Obviously none of you have ever played Vagrant Story. You can't make a topic about dungeon crawling and NOT mention VS which, to me, is king of dungeon crawling.
As for TC's question "How then would you suggest going about balancing the currency and item stock?"
VS did it by not having currency in the first place, you made everything yourself. And items, treasure chests and most enemies dropped items. If you must have currency, I can't see why enemies don't drop those.
