Going on hiatus

I read this entire post, and I'm pretty sure I comprehended about 10% of it. XD I guess I'm out of the loop in terms of RMN/staff dramas (thankfully so).

I do think the remarks about the site "slowly dying" are almost a cliche at this point. People have been chiming in about the slow death of the RPGMaker community before RMN even existed. Very little is actually ever put forward about what we can collectively do to elevate the site from the imagined crisis, though.

The first dungeon is done? Right on. How much longer until the game is Complete?

Well that's a little misleading. XD I designed the dungeons out of order, so most of them are thankfully finished with.

I had taken a break for a few months, but progress has nice and steady again.

It looks good but you might consider adding an option to turn off the movement sound effects or have a process to detect if the player has a direction key held down as opposed to tapping it and if so have the sound effects only play every other step. As it is right now, it's distracting hearing Bom-Bom-Bom-Bom-Bom-Bom-Bomp while running across the bridge when it looks more like the character is shuffling their feet. It would sound more realistic like Bomp-ff-Bomp-ff-Bomp-ff-Bomp-ff.
By far the simplest way to do this would be to have a duplicate tile that doesn't play a sound effect, since I think the sound is only a problem for the bridges (where it sounds like a dang machine gun firing). I think the non-bridge footsteps sound fine, although they could be a bit quieter, since they're more of an ambient thing. The coin sound is also a bit loud, maybe? It could just be the encoding for the video, I don't remember it being quite so loud.

Enough about that though, this cave looks great! It's a nice blend of water, natural growth and cave. I really like it.

p.s. there's a mapping error visible just before the video ends; the water tile is obscuring one of the ceiling tiles.

p.p.s. that windows sound confused the heck out of me

Thanks, Corf & Keampfer! I'm okay with toning town the bridge ambient sounds - although they happen pretty sparsely in-game.

Where was the Windows (?) sound?

Got almost 15 hours of project work done this weekend. Not sure whether to feel accomplished, or angry that I've been a slacker??

Thanks!

I had to literally leave my phone charger at work to eliminate distractions, but it worked. XD It was surprisingly easy to slip back into that flow state.

Nice work! Just a few comments:

  • For the arched pipes near the top of the screen, are they supposed to be submerged in the toxic water? Or a reflection of something from above? If it's the latter, I would increase the transparency, because it's too opaque for something that should be more subtle.
  • Some of the barrels (?) floating underneath the Hero position, is there a way to make the bottoms visible? The water is transparent for some objects, but not all of them.
  • Maybe add a slight overlay so the colors aren't so vivid?

RIP Chester Bennington of Linkin Park

Just saw this too ;_____; So sad.

They were pretty musically innovative in their beginnings. I listened to Hybrid, Meteora etc probably hundreds of times as an angsty middle-schooler.

Gambling

Wow, the attention-to-detail in this game continues to impress me. XD Even the skippable mini games have a nice polish! Nice work buddy.

Incredible work here, especially the hero animations.

GAYmak the Rainbow event

You can never have enough queer in gaym-make

Will there be any prize for the games themselves, or is it just for fun? XD

Getting To The Next Level: Is Patreon a good idea to consider moving forward?

dyhalto you're gonna cut yourself on your edge
There's nothing edgy about telling someone to take a step back, examine reality and consider alternatives. In fact, it's about as un-edgy as one can be.
Kickstarter and Patreon are not reliable sources of income, or even good sources of aid, really. And not to take a dump on Feld, but he has no completed games to show for years of labor (unlike, say, BadLuck and harmonic), and CotLE is, when you boil it down, just another jRPG made in RPG Maker, much disdained in the indie community. Are those the ingredients for a successful kickstarter/patreon campaign?

I agree with your overall statement (Kickstarter is terrible to rely on for an overall budget), but I don't think it's fair to single out Feld. BadLuck didn't technically have a single completed game, either, until the legal Rm2k3 rolled out. Whether or not an RMN developer can churn out short bursts of 'finished' content or small-size games doesn't always mean they can deliver on a large-scale/monetized project.

IndieGogo is another route you could take, although I think it's significantly less popular than KS. You don't have to meet any particular goal to pocket the funds raised, though.

I would wait until you have quite a bit more content and original assets to show off before making the leap to crowdfunding, especially because most people only have one shot at nailing their campaigns.
