What are you thinking about right now?

Should my personal creative struggles and failed collaborations (earthvalelol) that have ultimately led to innumerable delays in getting a playable game out remove my privilege to participate in and attempt to improve this community? Maybe you think so. My intellect and perspective are a valuable asset. This isn't a conceit - while it could potentially be said of anyone, I have demonstrated a level of reasoning and insight time and again than many have expressed admiration for. You've just said that words are powerful, so why can't they be valuable?

You have also struggled to produce a completed, playable game or demo for the last 5 or so years. This doesn't mean that we 'refuse' to take part in creation. I don't think I need to explain to you how that can happen or how frustrating it is. It doesn't mean I have snubbed those that do create - I have posted feedback and messages of encouragement on game profiles that interest me. These are the people that inspire the utmost enthusiasm in me. Behind the scenes I have participated in extensive beta testing of RMN-exclusive games. I do play the games that appeal to me. I have voiced my objections when I've felt that the sheer saturation of low-quality works on this excellent website are doing it a disservice - if that counts as snubbing creative people I guess I'm guilty.

If shmup is a giant bag of hot air how is it that we created a site full of interesting content? Don't forget that one of the primary reasons for creating an alternate venue for this content was the ease with which such content can be obfuscated on this site by relatively effortless endeavors - a design issue I made every possible attempt to bring to your attention.

As for the idea of banning #shmup members because they collectively possess some mindset incompatible with this site, I need only point out that the most belligerent of us, Strangeluv, created one of the finest games on this site only a couple months ago. I think that's sufficient to pin that assertion as fallacious.

I am thinking that RMN is better off with every shmupper banned. I should have done it years ago.

Except for years you were one of us, a friend we talked with on a daily basis since 2007, before your emotional stability seemingly faltered and you decided to scapegoat us for every possible failing your site had to Magi on AIM shortly after publicly taking responsibility. Now, several months after you attempted to torch this place with little fanfare you are sitting here like a saint professing that, had only you been more vigilant you would have removed individuals for whom a rich creative environment is a true passion and as such, tried as often as possible to act as an inciting force to that achieve that end. Unfortunate that, on account of some occasional, minor friction it's so easy for you and others to forget the genuineness and earnestness with which various #shmup members wanted this site to succeed both as a quality game creation community and in terms of growth and pageviews.

Your rant to Magi over AIM shortly after your decision to close RMN seemed to indicate that you were very angry over the creation of MD, or at least its arbitrary inclusion of a forum. Let it be clear that the site was founded as a a group blog, a closed outlet for personal projects. It was not until after you'd made the formal shut down announcement that there was any intention of inviting people to post there. No, including a forum - a decision you reacted to with disproportionately intense incongruity - did not automatically mean that it was making any attempt to supplant RMN. I apologize if you felt wronged by anything regarding the creation of MD, but I remind you that even after you announced RMN's end Strangeluv asked your permission directly in IRC if it was okay to 'spam MD links', which after your approval he did so with enthusiasm.

Your assertion that we have been overly persistent in discussion of RMN strikes me as a little bizarre. It is only natural that the current affairs and state of the game making community at large is an ongoing, primary topic of discussion for a society formed around the endeavor of game making. We have observed RMN with particular scrutiny because it was created by a (former) friend and we believed it to be the most promising, last real hope for the RM scene we have participated in for a decade to thrive. One could try to make that case that there has on occasion been an overabundance of zeal in this pursuit, or that cynicism in the face of disagreeable new trends has been excessive, or that our humor has at times been self-serving and fractious, but don't forget that the bulk of #shmup frequenters acted chiefly out of vested interest for this little piece of cyberspace. When this interest seemed to be obstructed our perceived infractions have been directly proportional to our genuine dismay.

Some folks in #shmup went batso and started behaving like immature little twats, posting random shit on the forums and insulting staff members(FIGHT THE POWAR), and then some more people were banned, and some left. Check introductions for those that left.

FTR, acting like it's 1984 and wearing tinfoil hats isn't helping your case against the BOURGEOISIE guys. Posting here is a privilege, not a right, and if you wanted to say something in defense of Magi there were certainly better channels than behaving like a bunch of groupthink pack animals.

This is absolutely false. One (1) #shmup frequent (Strangeluv) made a topic asking about the ban and posted about it in a topic that was already discussing it. Strangeluv posted the following, which was inexplicably deleted;

author=Strangeluv
I dont understand how you can make a logical decision to ban someone over a harmless prank who has served for 4 years on this site and is a productive member with a featured game. If you can't see that you're overreacting and made an irrational decision to ban Magi, then fuck you, ban me too.

Another inexplicably deleted post by Strangeluv explaining his actions: http://i.imgur.com/YWkNI.jpg

Provocative to be sure. But MULTIPLE people did not post similar 'if X then f you, ban me' sentiments MULTIPLE times in MULTIPLE places. Nobody went 'batso', nobody want on a 'rampage', nobody posted numerous topics on the matter. Nobody insulted staff members when inquiring about the bans.

<@Holbert> He kept posting unban magic topics.

Okay.

Unfortunately Karsuman, automatically believing what someone tells you without looking into it for yourself is the only case of 'groupthink pack animal' behavior here.

I am sitting here wondering how this community has come to this point. The members, principles, and interpersonal dynamics have been warped to such an extent that it is largely unrecognizable. Strange how that happens over time.

It's okay, they are being thinned out quite nicely now.

Christmas is July?!

Who are you again? I can see you're passionate about this, but I don't think you know what you're talking about. There are about 25 more people that would have to fall under Holbert's gaze before our little society is eradicated. I doubt you know who more than five of them are, but I'm sorry you feel so strongly about it. Ignorant attitudes like this are, unfortunately, the fuel on which some of that good old #shmup cynicism has traditionally run.

god save the games

i'm out for now

later wip, i used to really enjoy discussing castlevania with you

*gameover4.mid*

that looks like the kind of guy that would try to talk to me at a human workplace about his new modern warfare xbox headset, but i just turn up 'black dog' on my ipod and pretend not to hear him

felipe, good for you, you spoke up when many others did not...we will fondly remember your actions.

it is possible that others spoke up, but their posts were probably deleted

later taters

you shouldn't like those people's posts. they were vile and fractious posts, you can't tell because the infringing posts were deleted so you will just have to trust holbert, the person who deleted them for inexplicable reasons. additionally, according to holbert, those people created unspecified trouble for rmn on other, unspecified forums in unspecified ways. again, don't try to find out exactly how trouble was created for rmn by these individuals on mysterious shadow sites, just accept that these people were up to no good and are better off gone.

After talking about it to rcholbert, most of strangeluv's more inflammatory posts were actually deleted. So to those perusing the post history, it will probably be unclear exactly how douchey he was being about it. Just in case you're like me, and were worried he was banned just for arguing against Magi's ban.

I still don't really approve of banning people for basically anything short of child porn, but it does make me feel somewhat better to know there's more to the story.

since the posts were deleted there is no way for the public to know what actually transpired. that is the primary benefit of employing censorship; the despot can fabricate the truth to his convenience.

i mean, really, what you are saying is 'i am automatically soothed because the person who deleted dissenting posts assured me that the censored individual was at fault'. probably not very wise as a general principle.

Don't look at me or else I might disappear

holy shit it's Medieve

an old face in these strange days is reassuring

the long goodbye

Keep on rockin Sir Hassan

Strangeluv's Let's Try

am I allowed to say goodbye to this creator of the best game released since Rose Chronicles? or will I get banned...?
