Simple, Good or Bad
It is a reeeeeeeeeeeeally relative question.
For example: I hate simple settings, as I love to explore, know the backstory, politics and details of a setting, but I don´t mind a simple story or characters.
There is also execution: Good execution can make simple games shine, bad execution can screw a complex game.

Then maybe you should be playing The Sims?
Or Persona 3.
Pretty much every Persona game, my favourite is still Persona 2 since 3 didn´t interest me too much at first.
The point is that The Sims is not adventure and is (as far as I know) set in our world with no manga style sprites for characters and much less magic and robots... booooooooooring
Cities do have room for everything dungeons could, and honestly, I´d prefer to fight bandits invading a town than kill animals in a shithole cave anytime :P
Odysessy in Suri Islands (demo up!)
Ah as I said I would, downloaded your demo and started at it, love Pyra owning the mayor XD And the fact that she is married and pregnant tottally caught my attention since it is very differently from usual male RPG teen heroes or silly female healers (I hate pure healers TOTTALLY!).
Though I must say I missed an introduction before being thrown in the world map O.O
Again if you need help with sprites, send then to me (I may not edit/work on then instantly, but will do as soon as I can).
As for politics, I try to develope each nation based around a nation concept I believe would make it unique, like I have 7 main territories for my setting being one the most rich and overal powerful and developed, the other is strong in natural resources and has a wide population living in decent conditions, just not a lot of technology, there is an ubber technological one which sucks at natural organic resources, another which is heavy militaristic and keep its overpopulation under suppression and others which I won´t go on after all the topic is about YOUR project, not mine :P
Politics are essentially a matter of who rules who and what, that is it in a nutshell. Since you already defined territories, you must define who rule which and how come they rule the places: They inherited and keep the throne by law, they overthrew previous ruler, they were elected democratically, they enforced their rule on the subjects and stabilished the territory or they are a concil respected by people as wisemen?
Then think on how each nation holds up in regards to resources (food, water, prime materials), production of goods (weapons, tools, clothes, medicine), transportation, recreation, military and so on.
After you develope each nation, you go for international politics: if X nation is low on resources, but great at producing goods they would either trade with a nearby nation or try to conquer its resources by force, same for the other nation over this one. There are also alliances through marriage or simple disputes over power out of pure greed or paranoia (if we don´t invade then, they invades us.. KILL THEM ALL!!!").
Hope this helps any, will give more feedback once I play further :D

[Demo] MAGE DUEL
Voted, see my above edited post :P
And yeah, as weird as it may be, I like those kinds of relations, you should add actual ramdom semi-cameo things between your stuff :)

What is Deltus doing in Mage Duel? XD
As for voting: I think intros should be faster, kill the panning althogether, just place the two oponents already in the arena and make the announcer talk. For monsters, no announcement.
I guess it is a vote for option 2 :p

Towns can be absolute nightmares when they're not done right (Which is often): labyrinths full of multiple-floor houses with absolutely nothing in them but the occasional 10G and an NPC uttering a random line about her husband's drinking problem, and only a vague indication as to what area you have to step in to trigger the next 'story event.' And often (More of a case with the RPGs that follow Dragon Quest) The only buildings worth going in are the ones marked with a sword/armour/staff/inn symbol.
I think you're a bit too picky. The above described RPG town is the only way to make several RPG towns in one game without losing your sanity. You have to take into account the patience and work ethic of the game creator, and making all these towns "living, breathing" towns is a monstrous undertaking, but hey, go for it. I think if the game had only ONE town, that living breathing option would be more viable.
Or you could actually work less in dungeons and more in towns (which to me have far more interesting elements to work with, including battles and puzzles if the creator wants). To my liking, dungeons should be really short, mission oriented and eventful, towns should be big, more open anded and fill about 70% of the game :P
Shouldn't Have Used that Megalixer, You Were Going to Lose Either Way!
FFT is easy, only trouble I had on first playtrhough was result of my stupidity in sending my best guys in missions on the north and going south with a team of rookies, just to find myself damn trapped in the south of the map having the Lionel castle gate battle with just Ranza and some new characters. That was bitchy. Everything before and after: easy win.
Suzu: Summoner in Dorter? could have used but I get bored with long cast times in FFT, so I have an all monk party time there, earth slash desintegrates the first 3 guys who are kind enough to line up for the kill =D
As for the topic: I don´t like situations where you either loose or win but you loose in the cutscene, even if you get something good extra if you win, because I suck at finding secrets and optional stuff, so I like a set route to follow on those things, unless it is really OBVIOUS then it is fine.
Now, best ones for me are:
-Being desintegrated too early ( Zio in Phantasy Star IV is cool example, Lavos in CT as well). I never start using itens in the first 3 turns of a battle.
-Having a defined challege anyway, if you loose, game over, so you either gotta kick some of the boss hp or survive for x turns.
-cuscenes, they are great too, as long as you have the resources.
Also, there is no problem in always winning storywise, usually in confront situations, loosing means being destroyed unless you are either saved by someone or made prisoner, but I think it wouldn´t be too nice for a viking RPG for example :P

Oh no its Ocean
STEPPING IT UP: Status Effects v2
I think a good thing is to introduce status gradually in game and give a short optional description of then when they appear for the first time.
Let's discuss: Gender Equality, in gaming and in life
The best way for mutual understanding between geners is conversation (bet Asa and Suzu talk a lot for example) sure it won´t give you 100% information full time on the opposite gender, but will help you keep track of main values and how to interact better.
Aside from Equal Rites, the books I mentioned in my other post were written by couples and grounded on what many ppl from both geners had to say, most of the time when I coment things from some of those books with a woman, they agree at least partially to that, or admit that they are exceptions to a rule.
If fact, there are aspects of other males which I can´t understand actually, like in Men are from Mars and Women from Venus tthey say that men like to watch sports when stressed with a problem to feel as if they were solving another problem by suggesting things to the couch (even if the cough is not near then to listen). To me it is absurd, when I am stressed with a problem and I need to solve something else I must really have something effective like actually playing sports, videogames or participating in contests... just watching never fulfils me. But it works for many friends of mine.
