DOING IT! ~ WEEK TWO
I am going to use good ol' midi. It sucks thinking that some pieces may sound like crap depending on your sound card, but I'll use those that I consider better anyway.
Music is the easiest part to me. I found a lot of great RPG tracks in some obscure japanese sites whose name I couldn't even read, and I only have a hard time deciding which ones to use.
You can hear some bits on this video. Careful with the volume, I messed up the recording and it's too high.

What are you working on now?

Dratio, have you thought of VX? I bet you could replicate 95% of BoF's skills painlessly with Yanfly's Melody.
I've thought about it, but the problem is that my skill level with VX is 0. I am too advanced with this one to drop now. VX feels alien to me.
It's cool, I am able to make a variety of effects anyway.
What are you working on now?
I took a lot, if not all, of skills from Breath of Fire 2, 3 and 4 and I am working my ass off to adapt them to the default rm2k3 battle system. Many of them are simply impossible to do, or take too much copy/paste bullshit to even resemble the original effect. It's a lot of work and I doubt I'll be doing anything else for the next months.
I know that the possibilities of a custom system would be endless, but I also like the challenge of limitations. And I am not aiming too high with this project, no way... It's just time consuming to the extreme.

Do you prefer "strong" or "sissy" protagonists?
I think part of the reason the main character is a wimp (in japanese RPG mainly) is for story purposes. Lots of room for development, and also lots of drama and "waah, waah" at every event. Japanese stories are overemotional many times, and having a tough guy who doesn't blink if a comrade dies isn't fit for them.
Also, the player doesn't know a thing about the game at first. So, having a wimpy main character who goes around asking questions about everything helps the player. Gives the writer an excuse for the other characters to launch explanations one after the other.
Luke from Tales of the Abyss is the biggest plot device ever. Amnesia, isolated his entire life and ignorant of everything... Man, he has everything. Oh, and I love Tales of the Abyss, by the way. Not talking bad of it.
My personal take: a balanced main character. Not too strong (at least in the beginning) but not a hopeless loser who takes the will to play out of you.

ATTENTION Charas Project users! VIRUS!
ATTENTION Charas Project users! VIRUS!
I almost caught the damn virus. Not going back there until anyone confirms that it is safe.
But since I have gathered almost all I wanted from there, I can go on without it.
Does everyone here use resources from charas-project as well? I'm worried that many different games might end up looking the same.

EXP and leveling rate in RM2k3
I am planning a Legend of Dragoon type system... Where normal monsters give ridiculous exp but bosses are always a level up. Or two, or three. Chrono Cross has a pretty sweet system as well.
My main concern is avoid overleveling, but make the random encounters somehow worthy. Maybe make randoms drop little exp and decent money, and bosses a lot of exp and no money at all. Sounds good?

Overworld Mini Map troubles.
I don't like the idea of a minimap. I want the player to literally get lost exploring things, find a secret cave and get killed by some ridiculously broken monster. Well not exactly, but you get my point.
Also, world map 100x100? I am at 200x200 and it's not even a whole continent.
