Worst video games you've played this year

Final Fantasy 5 Advance

I've only tried the optional post-game dungeon this year, and it was painfully boring, and that's what I'm basing this off of. I'm really glad I never got FF6A if its post-game dungeon was in the same vein, because I wouldn't try that dungeon without an emulator armed with frameskip

Of the consoles you own, which is your favorite?

If the PC doesn't count, then the PS1.

NES: Suffers from a huge design flaw. Thank god they don't do front loading systems anymore. Plus I hate the controller and the SPU with a passion.

SNES: Really, there's nothing bad with it except that cartridges are most expensive than CDs which increase the price of games.

N64: Ahahahaha. It uses cartridges still ($$$) and expansions which are my sworn enemy for regular consoles. Spending $30 so I can get a minor RAM upgrade so I can play Majora's Mask? Fuck you Nintendo. This extends to the controller expansions, like the rumble pack and memory card. The controller was nice though, it worked beautifully.

PS1: I've never had any trouble with mine and the DualShock controller is nice, comfortable, and all the buttons are easy to get to. I'd see it as a SNES with cheaper games (at the cost of needing a memory card) and a better controller.

PS2: Designed by monkeys (who later designed the 360). Works like ass. I loath the people who designed it. I've never needed to perform maintainance on a console before I got a PS2. And its also the second shortest-lived console I've owned (the fan is connected to the mainboard by glue/solder.)

Gamecube: No issues with the console itself, but I was not a fan of the controller. It wasn't that comfortable and I hated where they put the Z button.

Wii: I got one with a defective GPU, but Nintendo support got that fixed without a problem. Overall there's no real complains except its Virtual Console emulation is lacking nice features, like remappable keys. It'd be nice to directly boot into Gamecube games too without needing the Wiistick. I also don't need to see the warning everytime I boot up. That's just exessive.

All other consoles I've never owned, so I can't form a proper opinion. Except the PC, which can do everything I want it to and more (when some part of it isn't giving me the finger). Maintainance of a PC can be a bitch, but that's what you get with such a versatile machine I suppose.

Allow me to fix Ody's statement:

Oh yay man, I liked Scrooge since I was 8 years old

I think it makes a lot more sense now :P

Release Something! Day II [Discussion]

So far I've only played Zephyr Dreams and I've completed the first dungeon so far. It has two of my biggest issues with dungeons:
- Big, open, boring areas. 90% of the tower was wide open floors and looking for the staircase somewhere else on the floor. There are three rooms, two of which actually contain something. Anything would make this dungeon better.
- Frequent random encounters. I ran from ~60% of them and I still demolished the boss. Drop the encounter rate. By a lot. Please. Its much easier to live with infrequent encounters than frequent.

This dungeon really did me in for the whole game.

I'll post more as I get the time to play more of the demos.

Video thread!

Its been some time since I laughed so hard at a video. (Its recommended to beat Earthbound before watching this video)

Caution: Your mind may break in the process of watching this video. I take no responsibilities if your brain shuts down during the video.

Your opinion on RTP

XP and VX support SNES (and other pixelated) stuff just fine. You just need to spend the five minutes of work converting your RM2k(3) tilesets to XP/VX tilesets.

Well, the font won't look perfect, but there's likely one that'll match the intended "256x224" resolution look (well, except that RM2k(3) ran at 320x240, so that's still not real SNES style)

Super Smash Bros. Brawl

I played (bought) the game and holy shit do I suck with the Wiistick. Its been a long time since I got a SD score of -9 after 3 minutes of playing (not counting my actual deaths, erm, death)

So far its awesome though. Brawl's adventure mode is far more interesting than Melee's.

Anything involving Scrooge is awesome.

However the window height is off, the frame is two pixels high and only the bottom pixel of the window isn't visible; some part of the bottom frame should be visible.

And the desk+chair seems too close to the wall for my liking.

Other than that, it looks great! (Plus its Scrooge McDuck!)

Your opinion on RTP

I don't see anything wrong with the RTPs (except VX being rediculously square 'n all, it reminds me back in the day when transparencies were optional). Here's the obligatory "As long as you use it right" statement, but that applies to everything. Really, there's no reason why not to use it if it what you want.

Another bonus point for the RTP is that it isn't rediculously hard to use, like several other chipsets (or incomplete, for that matter).

Just don't use any of those fancy "Addition" RTP packs like Don's 1.3 RTP for Rm2k. That only resulted in compatability headaches and they aren't worth using. If you really want to use them, just include those graphics in your game instead of assuming other people installed the same RTP as you.

Saving

You should also include your RGSS102E.dll in the your game's main directory (the one with Game.exe in it) so that they don't need to install RGSS to play the game.

It'll be in your Windows\system32 folder.
