It's -52*C with the wind chill!

Since I never got a chance to post Tuesday (Fuck you too Shaw), I'd just like to say it got cold enough that my entire beard froze. That was a first... (the worst I've gotten prior is the mustache got some ice, but never the whole thing)

I'm just happy the worst of the cold snap is over. Sort of. -30 tomorrow, but I'm really not interested in going to class tomorrow.

It's -52*C with the wind chill!

Not -52, but Calgary hit -40 or so yesterday, and -35 today after a barely cold Autumn+Winter.

I barely left home yesterday, the trains were delayed for an hour because of the cold. Now, today... argh...

Reply Box Hijinks

I had an interesting experience when I was writing a rather lengthy reply to the Boss Project, long enough that it involved scrolling the reply box.

Needless to say, whenever I scrolled via the mouse wheel, I got something like that.

It didn't glitch whenever I scrolled via page up/down or the direction keys, just with the mouse wheel. I've only had this problem here, so I don't know if there's a glitch in the code here or if my browser is being silly. (I'm running Opera 9.25)

The Boss Project

Well, that was a fun hour :D
Nice work Ephiam!

1) What was your favorite boss?
Chaos or Beezlebub. (I'm horrible at favorites)

2) What was your favorite boss death?
I liked the last one. Nice and epic, but a bit too much white flashing (not half as bad as the Chaos Knight, I looked away it was so annoying). Beezlebub wasn't that bad either, but I don't remember The Lord's death.

3) Which boss had the best music?
The Lord. Good stuff right there.

4) What boss did you have the most trouble with.
Chaos Knight. He actually killed me! (Okay, so did The Lord, but I knew I was going to die long before I actually did. Chaos Knight sort of turn on the murder when I knocked his HP down and caught me off guard, something I was much more ready for with Chaos)

Here were my battle strategies for those intersted in the order I did them in:
(We need a spoiler tag, if you don't want to read it, skip the striked-out text)

The Lord:

Use Haste Tokens on everyone, Attack Tokens on Knight and Red, start fight and UNLOAD. Knight + Red attack, Mage uses a 50MP spell, Cleric uses Divine Light, Healing Array when nesseasry (I think I used it once). He'll die without any problems (killed him right after he brought up the 4th Death Token). He never used stop, and slow all really didn't do anything.

Beezlebub: (I started with him and won, but I did so horribly I restarted and did The Lord first)

No pre-battle stuff. Entered fight, used Slow on Beezlebub+Dark Soul, Cleric refilled her MP with MP Dissolve (targetted at Beezlebub until it missed, then to Dark Soul) after Attacking-Up Knight, Mage sat on ass, Fighter stabbed Dark Soul. After Slow, Red cast Haste on everyone but Mage, then took part in stabbing of Dark Soul. Cleric, when MP was full, used Attack Up on Red and used Healing Array alternated with MP Dissolve to keep MP high. Mage continued to warm the ground with his ass, Knight kept inserting Masamune into Dark Soul. Goes down without a problem and everyone is generally in better shape leaving than entering the battle.

Chaos Knight:

I assumed that the Chaos Knight goes crazy on the offensive when he's alone, but I found that to be false but I still killed him so my strategy isn't the best.

Pre battle: Haste tokens on everybody, Attack tokens on Knight and Red. Refilled Mage's MP with two ethers.

I ignored the God Sword (see faulty assumption) except casting Blind on it. Knight stabbed Helmet, Mage used level 2 spell on Helmet, Cleric refilled MP, Healing Array when needed and Divine Light when health was good and MP was filled. Red, after blinding the Sword, joined in the stabbing of the helmet. Helmet goes down and everything is going smooth.

Here Red tosses Mage an ether who starts unloading with the level 3 Ice (Blizzard Star?) on the Body, Knight does the only thing he can, Cleric is pretty much stuck on Healing Array duty, MP Dissolve whenever somebody doesn't need healing. The Mage basically drives over the Body without too much trouble, even with the sword still doing its stuff. The Body nor the Sword really did anything dangerous unlike my first fight (where I died). Just Unleash Energy (oh hay Healing Array), and a multi-hit (oh hay Healing Array, again).

In retrospect, Red and Knight should've used those level 2 Ice spell scrolls. Oh well.

CHAOS:

Healed HP to full with those cruddy 500HP potions, filled Mage's MP with Ethers, used my first (and only) ether on Red, who after the fight really didn't need it anyways. Hate+Regen tokens on everyone, Attack tokens on Knight and Red.

Fight starts, Knight and Black attack the Staff (level 2 spells only here), Cleric refills MP with Dissolve + heals when needed, Red scans and casts slow on The Face and The Staff. A few points I needed immediate healing without risking to wait for Cleric, and Red was used for throwing Super Potions (well, one really)

Shift attacks to The Face. After a few rounds, I scan again to see his HP and finally notice he's weak to poison, so well, I do. I let poison finish him off while I start chipping away at Chaos' HP. The Face launches a Face Token and Red casts slow on it and everyone gangbeats it before it does a thing. I notice The Face has 1HP left so I off him.

Chaos and Tentacle are left, and Chaos really isn't doing a thing so I spend a moment to refill Mage's MP via ethers, Cleric MP Dissolve's Chaos to refill MP and casts Wall of DEF on everyone, Red wastes turns trying to throw some bad status on Chaos and fails, Knight stabs. Once everyone is ready to rumble, Knight+Red stab, Mage uses more level 2 spells, Cleric uses Divine Light twice, refill MP, repeat.

Then Chaos decides to attack.

From here its on the moment decisions. Knight and Mage are the attackers, Cleric and Red are on healing duty.

Knight is reponsible for healing if someone is <3000HP and Red/Cleric's turn is a bit off, and for keeping up Mage's MP via ethers. Otherwise, he stabs.

Black only casts level 3 magic. Only.

Cleric, if anyone has <4000HP, uses healing array. Otherwise uses MP Dissolve to keep her MP high (>255 to use Ultimate Healing Plus, just in case)

Red fills in healing HP or MP when nessesary. If Clerics turn is not immediately coming up and anybody needs healing (<4000HP), he uses a Super Potion or the Healing Array scroll. If Chaos uses MP Dissolve on Cleric/Mage, he throws an Ether to them. If nobody needs healing/Clerics turn is immediately next, he throws an ether to Mage. He never did anything else.

With this setup, nobody dies and everyone is pretty much at full health the entire fight. Chaos bites the dust after a bit of damage. I celebrate with cake.

Japan has cheap Wii games, maybe America/Canada will soon

Sometimes I think Nintendo just hates Canada. Super Smash Bros. Melee didn't drop in price for years, up to maybe a year before the Wii's release (when it dropped by $10-$15). What the hell Nintendo? That just makes me decide if I want it for the full price and if not, never look for it again (At least, unless used. At least those reflect the price the game should have much better than what Nintendo wants of it)

If Fire Emblem only cost $20-$30, I'd definetly give it another spin. But for their regular price of $50-$60? Pshaw.

How do you earn AP?

I'd do it slightly differently, with one switch (which I'll call Battle) and four variables (called APEarned, TotalAP, and BattlesWon. The fourth is just a temporary variable)

In every encounter, make a new page that triggers on Turn 0, turn on Battle switch, and sets APEarned to the AP the party would make via winning the figth (so for the Slime, APEarned = 1, Dragon->ApEarned = 10).

Now have a Common Event that's set to AutoStart when the Battle switch is true. First set your temporary variable to the Number of Battles Won. If this temporary variable is greater than BattlesWon, set BattlesWon to the temporary variable and increment TotalAP by APEarned. Then at the end of the event, turn off the Battle switch.

Its pretty much the same thing as Kentona's, but it accomodates fights that you ran away from and I just like it more for no good reason except that its mine :P (Sorry Kentona)

Forwarding ports help

Find the rest button on your router and hold it for a few seconds (10+ should be plenty). That should force a hard reset to its factory settings. If its still asking for a password, don't type anything in and see if it accepts that.

Creating a step counting system

This will count steps that you take into walls too. What you should do is record the player's X/Y before they push a button then after they do, get the player's new X/Y. If either of them has changed, the player moved so increase the StepCounter. Otherwise the player ran into a wall or something so don't increment the step counter.

Alternatively, you can have a loop that starts with recording the player's current X/Y, wait 0.1s, then take the player's new X/Y and if they're different, increment the step counter. If you want specific numbers you can actually do the math to see how many steps the player took in the 0.1s (although I can't imagine the player moving very far in 0.1s). This should deal with running into walls or long, continuous steps and I've used this method in a custom encounter system in RM2k3 without either of those problems.
