Map Design Fun #4

Haha, who would combine Breath of Fire chipsets with Secret of Mana!? That chipset was disgusting, the colors weren't even correct.

That new one is way better, Feld. You should post a map from your game because I know you have an inner made with that.

I remember swearing I would never buy a SaGa game again ...

I really think the quality in Square-Enix RPGs has declined over the years. That's not to say I won't get this game (I probably will), but it feels like they could have done a better job with the game. There are numerous complaints about the huge slowdowns and texture pop-ins, it doesn't feel like they put in the quality effort that I used to remember. They're working on too many games at once, and this game feels rushed IMO.

I bet the soundtrack and design is top quality and the game is probably fun, so I won't let a few bad things stop me from getting it. But I can't just ignore the lack of quality I'm seeing from the company in recent years. :(

Maybe the PS3 or PC version will fix this?

Let's discuss: Gender Equality, in gaming and in life

author=Feldschlacht IV link=topic=2520.msg46235#msg46235 date=1227286306
No, it's not solidly gender based, but if gender has anything to do with it, I can almost guarantee that my 'theory' is almost partially correct. I've never done any sort of conclusive experiment on it, but it's something I've noticed with almost every girl I've ever seen play a platformer.

Of course, this is not a bad thing! Usually it turns out that girls are better at RPGs.
Woahh I disagree with this.

The reason those females are not good at platformers is because they never played those games in the first place. I can guarantee you the exact same thing would happen with a guy if he played a game he wasn't familiar with (just like I bet most of us here suck at sports and racing games).

Also, I don't get this. I find girls to be just as good as guys in gaming. It all depends on your experience with games and how much time you invest in them. It has absolutely nothing to do with gender. Shinan and Dudesoft made some very good points. I also don't see how that picture could offend anyone when they're obviously just trying to cater to the casual female gamer. This seems to be a discussion between lifestyles and the type of person you are rather than your gender.

My Screenshot is Bigger Than Yours!

Wow Blind, those are fantastic.
I don't know why you applied outdoor forest mapping with a cave, though. The black space having two layers on top of each other makes no sense at all. I don't know, that just really bugs me. The whole idea behind it with forests is to show that there is more canopy above the first layer (from a top down view). With a cave, you can't have a ceiling above a ceiling.

But the water in that first screen looks almost too good. And the second screen is even better. They are probably your best screens yet.
Now stop mapping random areas and actually do something. =)

The only hypothetical question that matters...for game developers who are also grownups.

Definitely not. I make games as a hobby, a diversion, with the knowledge that it is something completely frivilous, and that is part of why I like it as a hobby. If I were to do it for a living, I think I'd probably go nuts knowing that I am capable of doing so much more. I have roots here at home, I plan to live here and work here, and hopefully one day be a school teacher here, and I want to be a part of and contribute to the well being of my community and the people in it, and I think that giving all that up to sit at a computer and do flowcharts and talk to computer nerds about the most efficient rendering process would be a huge disappointment for me.
I agree with this a lot.
Also I can't imagine working on something that isn't my own project. It just couldn't be something I could envision. If I weren't able to create my personal project that I make and enjoy for myself, this opportunity would just be like any other job. But that's just me.

RM RPGs...you have beaten

author=dethmetal link=topic=2456.msg44608#msg44608 date=1226877790
Played
I can't list them. Back in the day, I LITERALLY played EVERYTHING. It's almost surprising there isn't more people that were like me. My RM2K games folder, which I finally deleted a couple months ago, had HUNDREDS of games in it. It was over 2 gigs.

This is only RM2K3 games, but yeah this is why I didn't name every game I've played.

If I wanted to list the ones I've played, I would just post a screenshot of my games folder. Otherwise the list would be too long. I am positive I'm missing some from the list above anyway.

edit: Otokonoko, if you have Dragon Destiny II can you upload that somewhere? Because I would really like to study that.

Map Making 101

You missed my point completely.

I didn't want my tutorial to be about layers, shadows, and autotiles. I thought I made that clear. Drawing a map, figuring out it's size and layout, and how you go about designing it is what I was aiming for.

Specific engines do things differently in terms of how mapping is done (yes I have used RMVX and know how different it is), but the design is a universal thing.

Blood of Bahamut

No information has been given out yet.

That being said, this is now something I am now looking forward to. I'm all for games like these getting revived again in a new sequel. And Bahamut Lagoon was awesome.

Map Making 101

Uh, it's the same idea.

The design of any map is universal no matter what engine you're using. There are workarounds for specific engines to pull of certain effects, but that isn't really a map design issue.

edit: I mean that is like asking how someone should design a dungeon in RMVX. Or how they should design their battle system. You should not be separating design based on the engine you're using.
The shift key allows you to place auto tiles in select places on your map in VX.
