Fallout: New Vegas

I was underwhelmed by the teaser. I mean I like Obsidian and all but the teaser wasn't even much of a tease. Compare the teaser to the Bethesda Post Apocalyptic Elder Scrolls Teaser.

Bethesda Postapocalyptics Elder Scrolls

New Vegas

They are essentially copies of each other and somehow that really put me off.

This has something to do with time...

Ok, name one short game that you find hard to forget. And don't think much.

Tetris

I'm a big fan of games that are fairly short. Shortness usually adds to replay value. You can just jump in, play a session and then jump out. I hardly ever have patience for more than an hour unless the game is truly awesome. (This is for free games. Games I paid for I tend to have more patience for because I want to get as much as possibly out of those coins I wasted)

Day One~!

When you want a Russian Mobster voice, Norwegian hacker voice or a Romanian Old Gypsy Woman voice then I will be your man!

I can't do girl though :(

In other news, I'm totally fine with segregating not-downloadable games, demos, and completed games into three distinct categories - oh wait, you can already do that in the Games tab.

How do you do that? I know for a fact that not all games In Production have demos. In fact some games labelled "complete" don't have downloads. If you sort by status.

Sorting by Rating probably helps since games usually have to have downloads to be reviewable (though I know that there are a few freaks in the system where the download has been removed after reviews have been written)

So when we see previews of upcoming games in any media, they aren't actually games at all in that point - and there is no reason we should call them games?

If I go into this I could very well say that no there's no games in those media. (though if a magazine comes with a demo disc then that's games). There's presentations OF games and talk ABOUT games and other stuff but no actual games.

I would never open a magazine or turn on the TV and expect to find quality games there because games are usually stored elsewhere. (I say usually, because I guess there are TV-games nowadays and not to mention board/cardgaming magazines with rules in the magazine that will let you play immediately)

Looking-for-game friendliness

A game with no download is not a quality game. It might be quality but it is definitely not a game.

Speaking of new engines to the site...

More description:
Adventure Game Studio allows you to create your own point-and-click adventure games, similar to the early 90's Sierra and Lucasarts adventures. It consists of an easy-to-use editor to create your games, and a run-time engine to play them.

The game interface is fully customizable, with classic Sierra and Verb Coin templates provided by default. AGS manages most of the game so that you don't have to - it does all the donkey work like load/save game functions, pathfinding and scrolling rooms so that you can concentrate on the parts of your game that make it unique.

Set up your rooms, characters and sprites visually in the editor, then add some script to handle game events and you're done! You can even create a standalone EXE file containing your entire game, which you can then distribute to your adoring fans worldwide.

(all of the flavour text was stolen from the AGS website. I mean AGS is awesome and all but I don't know how to make proper flavour text for it. I know there are a couple of games made using AGS on this site (both of mine for example!) so I wouldn't mind this having a place on the list.

Not sure if im in the right section but can anyone tell me why they decline games, what are some reasons?

I haven't had games declined. But I do think it would be nice if there was a PM sent out for the declined games with a simple reason why it wasn't accepted. (I can see some stock responses such as "not enough description" or "one of the three screenshots should NOT be the title screen" or perhaps "holy shit dumbass, this game looks horrible, please go away")

Shinan's Interview Series

Alright! After too many days of being offline! The January episode is now out!
Episode 2

Only one interview this time unfortunately ;_; But instead it's a great interview with catmitts. The episode is 33 minutes long and little over 15MB.

In the end I made a mistake again so for the last minute there will be sound alternating from left to right headphones. Perhaps I should just make that a running thing...

Also in the last episode the intro I "dramatized" was the game Grave Spirit. This time... It's another game.

Challenge versus Frustration

Challenges are best when beta-tested. There's so much a developer will miss because he knows everything and even though he tries to forget he knows everything he still does. So Rei's suggestions are good but it's up to some beta-testing to really figure out what the line is when it comes to "hand-holding".

Because some games can also be too obvious as to what you're supposed to do.

But a good rule is to introduce a concept in a simple way first. As training or tutorial if you like. For example if you gain a new attack that has some sort of side-effect that is very useful then you'll have to subtly point it out by making it usable immediately after getting the new attack and have a simple example of how it can be incredibly useful.

Then once the player understands the new tool he has you can throw in some of those more challenging things into it. (Look at Portal for the perfect example of how to build up the challenge while introducing new tools)

Also if it's time/timing-based don't make it so hardcore that you have to do the right sequence exactly. Leave a bit of leeway so that you can make a jump even if you happen to stand two pixels to the right of the perfect spot or even if you did hit that one wall you had to dodge and stopped for a quarter of a second. (i.e. don't force people to play the perfect speedrun just to get past a certain point in the game)

Shinan's Interview Series

An interview with catmitts. It will unfortunately be a bit late. Which is a great start for a second episode... ...

But expect the episode on Saturday or Sunday.
