Cheating in video games

I've never used third party products to cheat. Well actually that's not true, a friend of mine owned a game genie for the NES and we played through Total Recall with it (that game was not only bad but also impossible).

However I'm not against cheating with the tools provided to me. (such as secret codes and built-in cheat modes and stuff like that). The only real reason I've never used third party stuff is because I don't want to install some weird "cheater" on my computer just so I could have a weird game experience. I don't tend to install a whole lot of mods for my games either.

But generally I don't like outright cheating if I'm playing a game for the first time. I'd much rather spend time to "game" the system than modify the parameters. And by gaming the system I mean exploit the AI or a randomness factor in the game (a.k.a quicksave/quickload)

James. Cameron's. Avatar.

I saw this yesterday. I couldn't stop myself from thinking about Titanic which I have been obsessing about for a couple of weeks now (watching all the extras. Saw the last extra today so now I won't need to go back there for a while) and how similar in many ways it was.

The first half of the movie was all about creating a setting and once the setting and the love story had reached its peak (sex) shit started to happen. Of course this is a regular storytelling device that all good stories adhere to.

On the whole I liked it. I might go see it again in 2d because the 3d, while amazingly impressive, just wasn't for me. I had a slight headache after the film and I still like to watch my stuff in two dimensions. Of course as far as 3d goes it was pretty sweet. There were hardly any of those moments where you felt like it was just there for the 3d (like so many 3d movies do. Something huge sticking out right at you just to show how awesome 3d is... It isn't)

And the villain was badass. During the attack when he just sat there in that ship and drank tea or coffee. I sort of saw him as an Officer of the British Empire in India just taking what he wanted. (And I have no idea why it had to be India... But that was what I immediately thought of)

I also sort of like Giovanni Ribisi though I felt that there probably was some little arc there that was cut out from the movie (rightfully so because it would only have added to the length)

I also liked how the main character started to look like someone who has played a little too many computer games for a little too long after... he played a little too much Avatar for a little too long :D

And I also forgot about the CGI effects. So much even that I caught myself thinking "That's an awesome set. Oh wait..."

Deus Ex

I liked the game. But already on the second playtrhough I started to see seams. Actually already in the first one since I was roleplaying heavily, being as loyal to the UNATCO as I could. I would have killed my brother and exposed the goodguys if I had had the choice.

Of course I didn't have the choice. But the game gave me a lot of choices in the first playthrough anyway. But on the second playthrough I noticed that no matter what choice I made the end result was the same.

But still an awesome game. Even if I don\t really remember too many details anymore. The main theme was excellent though. And it had the Illyminati. And anything with the Illuminati is good in my book (Except perhaps that Dan Brown movie)

James. Cameron's. Avatar.

He didn't think it a flop. But he said that he'd be happy if it made its money back because it was such an expensive movie and he certainly didn't think it would be the hit it became.

He's also said that the reason he wanted to do the movie was so that he could dive down to the real Titanic and shoot some footage of that :)

RMN Snews - Issue #12

I say this is great. With the early prototype picture of me as well!

post your picture

I took this picture with my webcam yesterday. I'm not proud of it but I thought it would fit in well enough here. (where other people show pictures they're not proud of)

Actually the recording was in stereo with one person in each channel. Which turned out to be great for editing since I could edit out all the time two people spoke at once and occasionally even move those so that they became separate. I also could edit out all my heavy breathing while talking to Chaos without disturbing the whole too much. However I know that listening to anything that way for anything more than a couple of seconds gets very frustrating when using headphones.

By the way, anyone who has listened to the whole thing. What did you think about my "dramatization" of a random RMN game there at the end. I thought it would be a fun thing to do, using the random game feature and making a reading of the intro. However what ddid you think? Did it detract too much and feel out of place or was it a fun thing?

Also I won't tell what game it was. You will have to figure that out for yourself. :D

James. Cameron's. Avatar.

I saw Coraline in 3d. Apparently one of the better 3d films and yes it's sort of fun to watch 3d-movies but I don't really want to see more than Coraline. I'm going to watch Avatar in 2d if I get the chance because for me 3d doesn't really add that much to the experience.

James. Cameron's. Avatar.

I heard a lot of early good things about it on the /filmcast. But after that it seems to have gotten more backlash. But now leading up to release and people seeing screenings it seems to have caught up a lot of buzz.

To be honest when I saw the first trailer I saw "from the director of Titanic" and I went and bought the Titanic 4-disc DVD-set. There's some talk there about how Titanic was a scary project. It was hella-expensive and no one really knew how it would turn out.

And it ended up winning a sick amount of oscars and becoming a huge hit.

I'm not sure Avatar will do the same thing. But if there's anyone in the worl who could make something like that it's definitely James Cameron. I've not been overly hyped for Avatar but still. There has to be something there since I remember Cameron talking about it in an online chat about Titanic in 1997. So it's a project that's been in the making for a long time and it probably has something special about it.

Something special that I haven't seen yet from any previews (not that I've followed the film very closely) but that might be there nonetheless.

And after this post I will probably not look at the thread before I've seen the movie because occasionally I don't want to be spoiled.

I'd suggest getting everybody to record their own mics and sending the result to you to put together and edit to avoid all that break up. Also that two people talk out of different channels at the end is really annoying to people with headphones. Please don't do it again.
I messed up the editing for the end bit and didn't want to spend the few minutes it would have taken to make it sound in both ears since it was just a fun extra bit in the end so I left it as it was recorded instead of converting it. I also hate it when sound is split up like that since I use headphones for nearly everything but I thought I could get away with it for those 20 seconds.

And local recording is probably a good idea but it would completely depend on the interviewee if they want to take the extra step. Perhaps in time for the third episode when I've become frustrated enough :)
