DS emulation works pretty much flawlessly with DQIX, fyi~

edit:
afaik, most ps3's aren't backwards compatible kentona :(
mine isn't!

Not with my pc, it can play crysis, but it can't emulate most DS games with decent FPS, maybe I'm missing something, but trust me, I tried all the DS DQ games, with not much luck.

that sucks! (i specifically hunted out a first gen ps3 because I don't own a ps1 or ps2)
yeah, when they went slim they took out the backwards awesomeness. worst idea ever

If I did some research before buying my slim, I would definitely buy the fat one with backwards compatibility, so many good looking games on the PS2... DAMN YOU SONY.

From the top of my head:
- Realms of Arkania series
- Ambermoon, Amberstar, Albion
- Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey
- Persona 1 & 2

Realms, I tried the first one, and I got lost in the city, totally clueless about what to do, where to start :D Having a manual would probably help.

The Amber series, checked it out, and going to give it a try, thanks!

Albion was...strange, didn't click with me.

SMT:SJ Is one of the few games I got to run on emulator with decent performance, and quite liked it, another reason why I want a PS2 is to try Nocturne.

Persona.... no, just no :D The combat in the second one is... strange, didn't like the setting, although the story was something different and fresh. From what I read, people either love persona games, or hate them. I'm probably in the second group :D

Sounds like Temple of Elemental Evil is the game you want. I think it should hit all the points you mentioned. And with those fanpatches it might even be playable!

Aaah, now there's a game I will definitely be checking out, I knew about it a long time, but never got around to try it and kinda forgot about it, since nobody was talking about it and it seems a little forgotten.

I played a little of Suikoden 1 and 2, but didn't like them much. But I did like Exit Fate quite a lot.

Dragon Quest IX or VIII would be my picks, if I had a DS or PS2, which I don't, only have those listed above, plus a ps3, but I know about all RPGS on that system.

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Ok I am now playing DF. DF that doesn't stand for Dwarf Fortress, but Daggerfall, The Elder Scrolls 2. I wanted to try this game sooner, but I couldn't get it to run on XP, and no online tutorial was very helpful, but yesterday I downloaded the files again, and to my surprise, Bethesda included a tutorial how to get it run under DOSbox, with very specific intructions. I followed them to the letter and the game WORKS :D So I'm finally giving it a try, don't know how long I'll play it, but it at least deserves a try. And many people like it more than (vanilla) oblivion, so maybe it will hook me (though I'm still in the first dungeon and MAN, is it hard to navigate through the place, the map doesn't help much).

As for my DF (Dwarf Fortress this time :D) tries, I stopped for now. The game is incredibly fun to READ about, but I just can't bring myself to learn it right now, and the philosophy of LOSING IS FUN is awfully close to the philosophy of Roguelikes, and once I thought about it, I realized that I HATE loosing all my progress and having to start again. But I might try to get into it one day, just not now.

I would also be playing inFamous 2, if the store where I ordered it didn't have problems with delivery, now I'm trying to cancel the order, so I can get it somewhere else, faster, but for more money. Damn, might save the money for some of the other upcoming games.
EDIT: Screw it, I managed to cancel my order, and ordered it in another store where I already shopped, they even have a lower price :D I loved the reviews of the game too much not to get it (not IGN or Gamespot mind you), not to mention I liked the first game.

Looking for a RPG

So, I thought I'd try asking here, if anyone knew about/could recommend a game that has some or all of these specifics:

- Party based (not necessary, but prefered)
- Turn based
- No random encounters
- Platform: preferably PC (even old dos games), or SNES/PS1/GBA
- Dungeon crawler if possible
- more combat heavy than story heavy (less talking, more smashing!...I don't mind reading some text, but games like PS:Torment or KOTOR don't appeal to me)
- NOT a roguelike
- NO games based on the Infinity Engine (BG, Icewind dale etc)
- NO hybrids like rpg/strategy games (for example Shining Force or Fire Emblem)
- preferably fantasy, not too fond of sci-fi, I love mage characters for example
- preferably not impossibly hard, like for example Wizardry 7

Now I could list all of the games similar to the specifics I already know of/played, but I would certainly forget some, so just fire away anything that comes to mind. (but to name a few, Dragon Age, Dungeon Siege, Might and Magic games...)

I am looking for a game like that, though I'm probably asking for the impossible. But maybe something will come up that I haven't heard of or haven't tried. Do you know of any ? Post them here.

Maybe even somebody else will find this useful.

Which game was the biggest disappointement for you?

Title says it all, I recently remember how I got burned terribly by one game after being excited about it the moment it was announced.

Talking about Hellgate:London. After it's announcement, I, as a Diablo fan, was searching for any info regarding that game, since it was being developed by some of the same people who created Diablo. With Diablo 3 nowhere in sight, and no other decent similar games to play, I was reeaaally looking forward to that game.
Got into beta, and loved every moment of it. I preordered it. Then it arrived. Then I played the *** out of it. But once I got further into the game, it was obvious this was no substitute for my loot-craving soul, my hack and slashing needs.....

The game was repetitive. Buggy. Before a few patches, even unfinishable. The random dungeon generator was boring, and levels soon started to feel (and look) the same. Then came the subscriptions, monthly fees, and even lifetime subscriptions, which many people actually bought, before realizing the game was bland, unpolished, broken, and lacked content. Not to mention, single-player players were getting their patches too late, long after they were put on the multiplayer client (the game had different SP and MP versions).

Then Flagship Studios sinked to the bottom of the ocean, even with all the money they squeezed from people with their promises of "next diablo". The online servers and all the online-only content for subscribers (and all the lifetime subscribers) went offline, never to be seen again. Many people got screwed over. (luckily I didn't care for the multiplayer)

What could have been a game better than Diablo 2 itself, turned out to be a major disappointement. Since then I tend to be careful before getting excited about new games.

It's sad really, the game in it's core was fun and had so much potential.

Oh well.... Any of you experienced something similar ?

Though anyone still playing 40d can be considered a lesser human being.

author=geodude
it's the definitive version B)

Hmm a little conflict here, so what is the main difference between those two? Just some quick info, don't want this to derail into a thread about DF :D

dwarf fortress RULES. you should go straight here for info about absolutely anything (what version are you running?) http://df.magmawiki.com/index.php/Main_Page

That's the wiki I'm using :D Mainly the "Fortress mode Quick start guide", and the search function for whatever I need to find info about.

Version? Hmmm, I'm using the "Mike Mayday's graphical edition, which come with v31_25_a, so I guess the latest version then. What's special about 40d? Is it a version before they introduced z-axis? (I read a lot about this game before finally trying to play it, I like to google info about games before playing them :D )

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Okaaay, so Dwarf fortress is nicely explained by this picture

I am still climbing, somewhere around the guy impaled on the spear I would guess :D
But I'm not giving up yet, I want to push through and see myself what this game is about. So far I follow the quickstart guide, my next step will be creating a dining hall for my hungry dwarves!

And I also play ToME, alias Tales of Maj'Eyal, nice roguelike which I find quite fun, so far managed to die with all my characters before even reaching level 10. My last defensive Fighter looked promising, nothing could hurt him, not even the first troll boss.... I got cocky, and totally got my face melted by the undead mage boss, tried to run away using my special boots of disengage, but the mage finished me before I could reach a corner behind which do hide. How come that dying so much is actually fun?

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Since my copy of InFamous 2 didn't arrive because of some stupid strike in my country, I decided to try and play Dwarf fortress, at least give it a try along with a quickstart guide and some tiles to make the graphics more bearable. Lets see if I can learn how to play it somewhat, and THEN I can try it for real and see if I like it, if not, I got some other games ready for trying, namely Angband and ADOM roguelikes.
