What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?
I really felt like playing an ARPG, but something else than "the king" Diablo 2 LOD.
Grim Dawn still far away, D3 still far away, Torchlight 2 might be close but still not released, no beta invitation for Path of Exile or D3, Drakensang Online is pretty shitty, the new Mythos game makes me laugh, the Sacred games make me mad..... I could go on :D
So I fired up Torchlight again, giving it a try for like the 5th time. Have a bunch of mods active to make the game playable (vanilla Torchlight is...well, "not good enough" to say the least). The mods really help to give the game a different/better feel. And since I upgraded my PC, it's pretty smooth and good-looking, especially with the texture mods. Let's see if the game holds my attention THIS time. But so far it feels like a very different game than the last time I played it, especially with Diablo-like unique champions with various enchantements, more monsters and the many balancing mods. Let's see if I can at least get to the final boss this time. But I think I might, my ARPG itch is quite strong while waiting for the multiple games to come out.
Plus I need something to cool me off after getting my ass kicked by Devil Survivor again and again.

Okay okay, maybe not the perfect example, but the way the characters look in that game just freaked me out, not really realistic (as far as anime characters go that is), and not really stylized either, just..... plain weird. To me that is, after a quick google search, many people feel the same, while many others say that they don't see anything wrong with the graphics at all. Just a matter of opinion I guess.
But yeah, "uncanny valley" usually refers to other kind of graphics/realism, but I still feel that SO4 is somewhat good example for it. "Perfect example" was an over exaggeration I admit.
EDIT: Damn civilians in Devil Survivor keep dying on day 2, lost the battle like 6 times already. Should probably switch my tactics a little.
EDIT 2: I've had it, after 12 tries, the best I can do is save the civilians, after which 3 demons can just easily escape--->game over again. Sheesh, talk about frustrating. I will keep trying, but right now I have to put the game down, or I will break something.
EDIT3: Finally did it, all I needed was to get a level or two and fuse me a Thor and that Megami demon with Force Dance and range 4 healing spells to reach that stupid civilian on the left who kept getting ganked by 2 demons at the same time. Main problem was the killing speed though, now with some right Dance spells it was a walk in a park. Wohooo!

author=facesforceMy Winning Tactics: The key is to rush and use far range magical attacks. This will allow you to save most. If not range, then RUSH like hell to beat the line of civvies to save them all.
Yep, speed/rushing was the key to this battle, I needed to get to the civies fast, and also to kill the demons fast.

I never got used to the battle system in Last Hope, and after the second planet, I had just enough of it. Also, the characters are the perfect example of the "Uncanny Valley" effect in games. Ugh.
I am currently playing Devil Survivor, just like I said I would after trying it some time ago. This time I'm going deeper, the story is interesting, and the battles just lovely. Fast paced too! So far only 1 game over, but that will probably change soon, as I am only at the start of day 2, and I hear the game gets quite hard.
Next on my list: proper playthrough of Etrian Odyssey 3 and Strange Journey. Interesting thing is, I seem to like/be interested in games that the reviewer from "Classic Game Room reviews" likes. Or maybe it's just the way how he reviews those games that makes me want to play them through.

Kentona told me to link this here. So here we go:
http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011/09/22/how-diablo-iiis-drm-will-affect-you/
There is no way in hell there will be no pause, how exactly would that work with hardcore characters ? (I don't play hardcore, but many people do)
You would have to be an absolute no-life to be able to play hardcore with no pause option. Somebody is at the door and you have to answer, while fighting a mob of monsters? Your kid needs your attention? Your family needs help with something? Gotta go to the toilet real bad? Bye bye hardcore character.
Why not add hardcore mode to WoW, it would work the same (read: WOULDN'T work).
That's the way how I see it anyway, maybe they got some voodoo up their sleeves that will make this work, or they will simply change it. Hopefully.
PS: I still hope that D3 will come late 2011/early 2012, since the beta should be around for 3-6 months before the release, and it's already up. But I guess we will see.

Most people don't like having to start a game over just to change a single skill for another single skill. You may not be most people, but the last time I checked it is best for developers to cater for most of their target audience than a minor number of it.
EDIT:
It's also hilarious how you don't understand how Diablo III skills work.
"To use these skills, you have to assign them to an active skill slot. (Blizzard announced Monday that there are only six slots, down from seven. The skill slots are keys 1-3, the left and right mouse buttons, and an alternate right mouse button you can toggle with the tab key.) Once you’ve allocated skills to those six slots, that is your “build” and you can only use those 6 skills while you’re out adventuring. But, now! You can swap out one (or all) of your six skills just by dragging any of the other skills you have unlocked into their places."
Unless you are a complete and utter moron, you only ever need as many character slots as there are classes... x2 if you wanna play SC and HC. 5x2=10. OMFG LOOK HOW THAT WORKS!UIO£Eqadhsbi9p!!!!!
EDIT2:
@Kentona: It's not that the stat-point system was broken, it's that the availability of internet communities makes it so that most people don't even bother trying to explore stat-systems anymore as they instead wait for someone else to do the hard, number-crunching work and then copy their build stat-for-stat. If most of the people playing the game aren't even going to bother exploring what is possible (as shown by the D2 and WoW communities) why should Blizzard bother putting that system into place?
It is hilarious how you don't get the point I was trying to make, I am aware how the skill system works in D3. But I won't go into that again.
The skill system still doesn't solve the fact, that when I level up a character to max level and explore all the game content, and then sometime in future decide to make a new character to relive the game, I either have to delete some of my characters (no thanks) or am out of luck. Or are you trying to tell me that majority of people will play D3 through only 10 times and then just call it a day and move on to another game? I don't think so. It's even more laughable compared to D2 where I went through the game hundreds of times, with hundreds of characters over the years (and some characters even had SAME builds as some earlier ones).
(Let's also not forget that characters will play differently depending on their item drops, not only the skills (unless you are a heavy twinker/hoarder and want every character to be the same).
But maybe I'm just a complete and utter moron to want to play a DIABLO game more than 10 times.
PS: Sorry if I seem offensive, I just had 2 12hour night shifts in a terrible job, and am totally f**ked up.
EDIT: Just a little something Jay Wilson said during Blizzcon, it's interesting how they changed their mind with the char limit.
Jay Wilson: “I’m going to translate what I think you’re asking. I think you’re asking two questions. 1: Is the stash going to be bigger? I think that’s one of the questions. And the other question is, “How many characters can we have?” …
We haven’t determined the number of characters per account. But, because accounts don’t work the same as they did before, it’s not like you have a CD key and you can make tons and tons of battle.net accounts – it’s you have a CD and you have your battle.net account. The number of characters is going to be a lot higher. Exactly what that number is, I can’t say. We’re going to try to make it a number that’s actually really hard to hit. *applause*
So, get ready to applaud more. We’re going to make sure we never delete your characters. Even if you leave the game and come back.”
So basically it went from "lots of char space, no need to delete your toons" to "10 char limit, trololo". I really hope this isn't final :(

Cool about the latency, one of my major fears with online-only is fading away.
Very happy about that.

Who says you won't be able to play like that? Has blizzard explicitly said "Your gold will be forced upon other characters alwayyys!!" Or is it going to work more like you have gold that you can deposit into a shared 'bank' of some sort? Or maybe you just have the option of transferring gold to your other characters? Let's not be so hasty to judge. "Shared Gold" doesn't necessarily work exactly like you're assuming.
If it works like their most popular game of all time, then I don't think you'll have to worry about being able to 'live off the land', as you say.
It just sounds like it from the official info of shared stash, mainly this part:
A Golden Opportunity
Now, some of you who have played Diablo II may be wondering whether or not gold can be stored in the shared stash. The short answer is “no,” and that’s because the way gold is saved has been improved significantly in Diablo III.
Instead of gold needing to be stored in a character’s inventory or its private stash, like it was in Diablo II, it will now be a pooled resource that's usable by all the characters on a Diablo III account. This will help eliminate the tedium of having to move gold in and out of stashes, as well as make it quicker and easier for you to get back to the merciless, unrelenting slaughter of every hapless demon in sight.
I of course hope they do it so all the players are satisfied, it just doesn't sound like it from that. And gold should be more important in D3, unlike D2 where it was really just useless (apart from gambling).
To kentona: you got a point with the "sorceress build" example, but still, Energy is the most useless stat ever, and you are seriously gimping your character if you put lots of points in there, which was a big problem when starting as a new D2 player back in the day. And you really didn't get much options how to build your character stat-wise and still make it work, unlike with skills. Example: Sorceress going with Lightning skills is still viable, just as all the meteorbs/blizzballers, but sorc going for a Energy build, or some STR/DEX madness simply didn't work out well in the end.
I disagree with all the dumbing down in this game, Blizzard always stating that they want to make the player get back into the action faster with fewer interruptions... let's just take out all the features and customization from the game and let the player mindlessly slay monsters, eh Blizzard?
But as long as there is enough customization through skills and equipment, I won't miss the stat customization. Though it would certainly be nice if some developer finally came up with a fresh, functional take on the stats/character growth. It's just that to me, the stat system in D2 didn't really work (only one of the two major bad things I found about D2 during all those years of playing).

author=Fallen-Grieverauthor=SmileWithStyleI don't think you understand how the "respec" option works. You don't make a standard build like in Diablo II, it's absolutely NOTHING like that.
More info about D3 that I don't like...
1) 10 character slots. OMFG whaaaa-? "Why would you need more slots when you can just respec" is their reasoning basically. Because I want to take multiple builds through the game, instead of just switchning them around all the time? I seriously hope they change this, and don't come with something like "Pay for more slots, trololo"
Respec is there for people who want to try various builds on the same character, and for people to try again if they screwed up their build, just as it was there in 1.13 in D2.
However, it is NOT for a player like me, who likes to figure out a build and go with it through the whole game, to really test the power of the build against all the game has to offer, only making minor adjustements. Then I make another character, with different build and playstyle philosophy (which the game WILL probably allow with the skill/rune system). Trying it all out on one character and constantly respeccing is not my idea of fun.
Besides, I am hoping D3 will stick around for a long time, and over a long period of time, I tend to make more and more characters to take through the game, trying different builds, finding different loot and going through different randomized maps. Basically, 10 slots allow me to go through the game 10 times and that's it, unless I delete some of my characters.... And I HATE having to delete my characters. Not to mention all the people who play softcore AND hardcore, for them, 10 slots is even more painful.
Keep in mind, Blizzard stated that it isn't impossible for the number to change, and I hope they come to their senses. Also, they would probably add more slots with datadiscs, but since they will also add new classes, that doesn't really help....
And to the stats being automated.... They already were, just as ashriot said. With little knowledge of the game, you already knew what stat point distribution you had to do to make the perfect maxed character, you didn't really have any choice, unless you were fine with willingly gimping your character or were going for some challenges (no vit builds, dex builds etc...) . Enough STR for all your equipment after bonuses, either pump DEX for max block or zero DEX/enough for decent hit chance, the rest in VIT, zero in ENERGY.
Stat system in D2 was actually pretty stupid. I don't think they had to streamline it and make it automated, but imho it's still better than the system in D2. They could have created a new system that actually worked nicely, that would have been better, but this current system works for me.
EDIT: To the shared gold thingy.... I don't mind shared gold, I just want them to make it seperate from character gold, so I can play a character without having acces to the millions of gold from my high level one. I like starting from scratch and "living off the land" sometimes, and so far it looks like they force one single gold pool for your whole account, which just stinks.

2) Shared gold. This would be fine, if the game didn't FORCE it on you. The way it is now, your account has a single gold pool, and all your characters add gold to it, and have permanent acces to it. So if I want to play a new character withouth the money support, I either have to keep track of how much gold the character makes myself, or I can go f**k myself. Why isn't there some sort of toggle or separate pool for shared gold and character gold? I hope they change this, I sometimes like to play my characters "clean", with no twinking, not even monetary.
Jesus Blizzard, all the money clouding your brains? Seriously....

Hey I didn't know about any other sites than the official were providing this much more info. Looks pretty sweet... But as a wizard fan myself, I just don't like how the armor looks... I like the wizard herself (as if I would play a male char when I don't have to), but the armor.... not my cup of tea, hope there are some special-looking unique items.
Anyways, I am pretty sure the game itself will be quite awesome, but the way Blizzard goes about their business is truly pissing me off, and all the crap around still makes me not want to support them. I want to play the game itself, but with the online-only, that might not be too easy, not to mention the small, but noticable lag that was present in D2 when playing online, compared to 0 ms respond time in offline. Argh Blizzard, why do you torment me so much.
And yes, T1 was boring, and the classes were stupid, only 1-2 ways to build your character, and they shared many skills.... But play some of the new classes from mods, and voila, better classes. I am hoping that in T2, they learn from their mistakes and take in some feedback/suggestions, and manage to create quite a good ARPG (we desperately need more of those, and done well). And even if they slip, the modding community might solve any issues with the game anyways (they did a tremendous job of improving T1, however, when the base game is kinda crappy, there isn't that much they can do, but if T2 is good on it's own, imagine what the modders could do with it).
EDIT: This was mainly a response to ashriot, Jude posted before I could finish writing this :D Doesn't probably matter much, but thought I'd make that clear.
