What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

author=benos
Deus Ex 3.

Something leaked I guess? It shouldn't be released till the 23rd. Not that I care for it, this game doesn't spark my interest at all, and the gameplay videos all look boring to me, don't know why.

I'm playing NIER, great great great game. Love the story, love the characters, the combat is serviceable and fun, and the soundtrack... oh my god the soundtrack. Very unique game. Weiss and Kayne dialogues are great, and the main hero is very different from all the other games. Besides, some of the quests are very "dark", not too many happy endings so far.

Example: Old man sends you to find his dog, who didn't come home for 24 hours. So you go, find the dogs body, and in his mouth, some herb. You come back to the village deliver the bad news, where you discover that the old man died of heart problems while you were gone. The herb the dog had in its mouth was the herb that would help the old man. The dog just tried to help its owner, and the result...

Also, Starcraft 2 Starter Edition, which made me order the full game, should arrive soon. I hate micro-management and strategy games in general, but in this game, the pros outweigh the cons.

Hey Buddy, Whip It Out. Let's Compare Swords.

The STAKE GUN from Painkiller of course, nothing is as fun as nailing enemies through the head and pinning them to a wall. NOTHING. And the secondary mode is a flippin grenade launcher, when you get bored with the primary mode...which is NEVER! Muhahahhaa.....ahem.

Other finalists would be the BFG from Doom, and most scythe-type weapons in general. I love scythes.

I finished Dante's Inferno, hell of a game. A little short, but that's quite normal with this type of game.

So before my copy of Agarest: Generations of War arrives, I've been playing Eternal Sonata too, and I don't know what to think. The color palette is beautiful, the soundtrack is awesome, I don't mind the childish characters at all, the story is unique, but the combat... Run up to enemy, hit ATTACK until the chain meter fills up, then hit SPECIAL, rinse and repeat. When it's enemy turn, you either guard in time and battles are a walk in the park, or you get hit for loads of damage, resulting in serious injury or death (most notable with bosses). The light/dark thingy keeps things at least a little interesting, but still, I was hoping for something more than another button masher. Probably won't keep me from finishing the game though, once I'm done with Agarest and Nier.

Greatest Games You've Played

Diablo 2, thousands of hours into this game, I still sometimes play it, even after 11 years, and I only ever played single-player, Battle.net can kiss my ass. Talk about lasting value.

Flower, can be finished in under 2 hours, but is still one of the most beautiful games for me, evoking many emotions during gameplay. In the first levels you are relaxed, then comes fear, then comes anxiety to clean the city... The soundtrack was just perfect, no other game makes me so relaxed and happy while playing. Sometimes I just select the game on my PS3 and let the music play.

Guild Wars. A MMO game that isn't really a MMO, and lets me play through almost all the content alone if I wish to? Yes please. Decent story, and just lovely gameplay, you can only take 8 skills with you when leaving outposts, making the game quite tactical. There weren't high damage numbers and tons of loot, skill was much more important than in other MMOs. And with 3 main stories, and 1 datadisc, multiple professions, titles, missions quests...there was enough content to last thousands of hours. And soundtrack by Jeremy Soule. Nuff said.

Titan Quest. After searching for a Diablo-clone for some time, I finally found one worthy of my time. Tons and tons of loot, many ways to build your characters, great soundtrack, and the setting in ancient mythology just clicked with me.

Folklore. Strange one, I liked the setting, the gameplay was great and unique in a way, but what really took my breath was the story, mainly the way all the things turn out in the end. I was somewhat lost in the story, then in the end when you learned the final facts, all the threads connected, and it finally made sense. Left me quite surprised, with a smile on my face. Too bad this game didn't receive much attention.

I could probably go on, but to keep things short, I will just post a list of some notable games that I consider the "greatest".

Max Payne 2
Flatout 2
Infamous 2
God of War 1-3
Devil May Cry 4
Mirror's Edge
Painkiller

What Videogames Are You Playing Right Now?

Apart from Tales of Phantasia and Titan Quest, I'm playing Dante's Inferno.

I was checking reviews for Nier (Classic Game Room, thank you for making me get 2 new games), because I finally got the money to get it, and I stumbled upon a review for Dante's Inferno as well. Liked what I saw, so I went to the store and got it.

What a pleasant surprise. The game is great! Yes, it is a lot like God of War, but that's not a bad thing. I like some things in this game much more than GoW, the locations, the enemies (for example the Gluttony location, intestines everywhere, monsters farting and barfing, nasty...and if you like boobies, you will love the Lust location, which is...disturbing to say the least). The main objective/story is simple, but at least it makes sense, unlike God of War 3 (yay I'm a big fat jerk, let's kill some gods while the rest of humanity suffers from all the catastrophes I unleash). And the main weapon is a scythe, my favorite type of weapon that I don't get to see too often in games.

I like when I expect nothing from a game, and it pleasantly surprises me like this. Sure it lacks the polish GoW received, but it's a great game, and if you liked GoW, you should definitely get it.

Which game was the biggest disappointement for you?

OKAY so let me get this straight; in a game where the ONLY two things to do are fight and watch the cutscenes, you didn't like pretty much the only playable thing that the game had to offer, but you liked the game itself? What the shit?

No no no, I said I liked (or should have said "don't mind") the linearity, not the game itself, I hate the game, it's not even a game as far as I am concerned, interactive movie would be more fitting (some people don't mind that and enjoy FF13, and I respect that, but sheesh is this game bad). I wanted to give it a chance, I pushed all the way through to Pulse, then I just couldn't stand it anymore and swore I would never ever touch it again.

Which game was the biggest disappointement for you?

I for one liked the linearity of FF 13. I don't need towns and NPC to talk to to have fun. What I didn't like was the combat system. I simply need to have more control during battles, I'd rather give all the orders to all the party members myself, than to just constantly switch paradigms every time the situation changes.

Unlike many people, I actually STOPPED playing when I got to Pulse, the place where most people start to like the game, since it opens up. There wasn't enough abilities to keep things interesting, the crystarium consisting mostly of just passive upgrades by that time. There were no "cool" abilities, every spell was over in a flash, and there wasn't much to look at. Where are some longer, epic-looking spells? Some unique abilities? Limit Breaks?... Ah well. I'm hard to please. I liked the guard/gauge breaking though, but that's about it.

The biggest problem with that game is, imho, that the developers focused so much on getting good graphics that everything else suffered. Maybe XIII-2 will do things right.

Tales of Destiny/Destiny 2 question

Thanks for the info, no wonder I confused the games, there is a game Tales of Destiny 2 released in japan, for PS2, and then there is Tales of Destiny 2 released in US for PS1, renamed from Tales of Eternia because of trademark issues. Sheesh :D

And the comparison that I read might have been ToD/ToD2(PS2), so I might just give ToD a chance after I finish Phantasia, leaving Eternia for last.

Thanks for clearing things up!

Tales of Destiny/Destiny 2 question

Hi, I was just wondering...

I am currently playing Tales of Phantasia PSX version, loving it so far, so I will probably want to play another Tales game, either Destiny or Eternia (Destiny 2).

Just wanted to ask, can I understand/enjoy Eternia without playing Destiny first? From what I read, Destiny is inferior to both Eternia and Phantasia(psx version), so I was thinking I would skip it. And it seems Eternia takes place in the same world, but other than that, I didn't find any other connection.

Those are lenghty RPG games, so I probably wouldn't have the time/patience to go through all of them, and since ToD seems inferior to both....

Can somebody enlighten me a bit? :D

PS: Off topic, why are the world maps in early RPGs based on the real world? In Phantasia and Dragon Quest 3, the map is just the world map with some tweaks for example.

Get it on console you won't be complaining anymore.

I'm not sure I'm willing to dish out the money AGAIN, for a console version, just to give the game another chance. It would probably run fine, but the hit box detection might still be a pain in the ***. Will probably just stick to MW2 for now and wait till I get a new PC.
