More of the same Argument..

With a new Call of Duty comes the same old argument within the gaming industry. Is more of the same a good or bad thing? I just finished watching the Assassin's Creed Revelations reviews from IGN and Gametrailers. Albeit GT has a much better review, they both nitpicked at the same thing.. Has the game made enough improvements over the previous game.

Yet if I watch any review for Call of Dutys new games and I have played them all(Well except the third one) up until the newest Modern Warfare, I can't help but think about this same theory applying to those games but never gets mentioned as a fault, yet games like the Uncharted series, God of War, Assassin's Creed, Halo, Elder Scrolls all adding a wealth of new additions and gameplay balances/refinements with each new installment get criticized for this very reason.

I know this shouldn't really bother me much if I myself enjoy these games, but I can't help but notice this odd double standard. Is it money(probably) or maybe just the people themselves reviewing these games personal preference, but I just find it odd.

So what do you guys think, is more of the same a good or bad thing, do some commercial games these days get a pass and others don't for said problem?

PS - I wrote this really fast and from the top of my head, that's probably why it won't make total sense haha.

Y'know that mapping contest..

I was going to make, well I have held it off because of my studies, but now that I finally have free time to do stuff, I decided a while back that I was going to make the contest in December, which gives me the added bonus of deciding a simple and appropriate theme.. Christmas!

The reason for this topic(and why I'm making it so early) is to go over all the details regarding the contest now with everyone so when December hits we can just get straight into it without any fussing about and everyone agreed on the terms and conditions.. Haha don't know why that made me laugh.

So here's what I was thinking for the set up..

* Use any Rpgmaker or select a specific one, maybe not Rpgmaker at all?
* All participants have creative freedom on size, immersion, and playability as long as it's with the theme chosen.
* Maps must be playable so passability errors and what not will be judged
* Select 2-4 people to judge all the entries, and if chosen to judge cannot enter themselves.
* Maybe have some kind of achievement for the winners. 3 winners in total.
* Two threads made, one to show progress and discuss the contest, the other for posting all the entries in a specific format.
* Graphical range is anything you can manage to come up with, custom or not. Stay within the theme though of course.
* If you want to add a little story you may, but that wont impact on the judging, but it is a nice touch.
* Map size, as big or small as you want it to be as long as it's playbable.
* One game page will be made with all the entries placed in them.
* Two or three weeks to complete said maps.

Anymore suggestions or questions, revising of the rules I was thinking of you guys want added, edited post here.

Steampunk Tiles(Not FFVI) for 2k/3

Does anyone know of or happen to have any Steampunk-ish tiles for Rpgmaker 2000/3 on them? And as the topic title states aside from Final Fantasy VI?

Drive(Movie)

author=IMDB
A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong.

I loved it.

The movie was almost too cool for its own good but I think Refn pulled it off. He showed a great understanding of mood and tone. I loved the super stylized directing and the music was unique it had kind of an 80s feel to it. The opening scene was a brilliant piece of film making, really dark and stylish. The violence was reminiscent of Tarantino in that it was ultra graphic but darkly comedic which made it work. A lot of action type movies these days use convoluted plot twists and make things unnecessarily complicated. The plot was straight forward and executed well.

With an inferior actor I could see the lead character being really hollow and stiff but Gosling was great at conveying emotion with little dialogue and subtle expression. Supporting cast was good, Albert Brooks was a good choice over a typical gangster type actor because he automatically gets some sympathy and has a built in comic relief aspect that makes his evil violent acts go down a little easier. Cranston was good but a little under used and Pearlman was ok but maybe a little too over the top. I thought Mulligan was miscast, I just can't picture her being a waitress at a Denny's married to a gang banger but she did ok and had great chemistry with Gosling.

This type of movie isn't for everyone. I could understand if someone thought it was over stylized or that Gosling's character was too much of the cliche strong silent type. But I think most would derive some enjoyment out of it. It is just a really entertaining 100 minutes.

Overall I thought it was the best movies of the year so far. One of my faves now too.

Sport?

I know some of you guys will be into sports or watch sports, but I'm still curious, do any of you guys follow or play/watch sports?

Lets see how athletic the rpgmaker community is.

A good OP goes first so yes I do watch and follow sport. I used to play Soccer, I got chosen for the national under 19s squad but I fucked up my ankle pretty badly and doctor said I couldn't play anymore. I watch Rugby especially since the Rugby World Cup being hosted in New Zealand right now(In case you didn't know I live in New Zealand, Wellington the capital to be specific) and I have been neglecting my studies to go out and hook up with all the new international woman that have been here.

PS: I'm a bit drunk right now so.. yeah, take advantage while you can!

Anyway I follow Rugby quite a bit as it's our national sport, same with Cricket and the Wellington Phoenix for soccer. So.. What about you guys?

How was your day?

Today has been my first day in like 5-6 weeks that Ive had time to myself. So I got up, had a shower, debated whether I should get to my 2000 word report due tomorrow for my course. Instead I downloaded the whole Firefly series(I lost my DVD set) and Fast Five, sat back and just relaxed all day.

It was beautiful, so so beautiful. Also how awesome is Firefly!

Lately it's just been course, then night shift, course, night shift, eat, get drunk on Saturday night with friends I rarely get to see, wake up hungover for course, night shift.. Rinse and repeat.

So.. How was your day?

Do you kill bugs?

This topic is inspired by the life of the spider I just killed. I wanted to know what you guys thought of this, which I assume is very little. Do you kill bugs? If you do it, do you give it any thought? If you don't, why don't you? Is it an act you are completely indifferent to? Oh please, do tell.

The Rest..

Anyone know where I can get the rest of these styled character sets? I remember I kept this one thinking it was cool to see Alex and that differently. But now for the life of me can't remember where I got it.
