Review Vote Guidelines
1/1.5 - so horribile I will not mention it. No one would like this trash.
2/2.5 - bad but with some good qualities or good
but with many bad flaws. Could have been worse and some people may like it anyway.
3/3.5 - from decent to good games. This is what I normally expect: entertainment. Some people may like it more, others less but it's ok!
4/4.5 - exceeded my expectations. These are must play for everyone.
5 - Rpgmaker Nirvana

*NOTE*: event games/jam submissions and other games that were developed in a very short time or with other restrictions get a rating bonus (usually +0,5), you are warned!

City of Bones Review

Nice, awesome art, I am really curious about next projects (no matter if they're not games!). Really nice art, but hey... clowns were never funny, more like creepy lol! :P

Sweet Review

Thanks for the feedback!

I really wanted this game to be more about feeling and seeing rather than competition and dominance, like in traditional RPGs. This is why I decided not to have a level or experience system, or any boss encounters. It's 100% okay if you choose to not talk to or engage with any of the enemies you encounter, just like it's 100% okay if you engage with all of them. I think of it like life, where you can choose to focus solely on progression, or you can focus on the smaller things you see along the way. It's a very 'stop and smell the roses' kind of game. And just like life, you can always switch gears and change based on how you're feeling and how your needs change, but you can never go back and retry the experiences you skipped. (unless you start a new game but that's beside the point :P)

To me, the reward in the encounter is the character you just got to know. And I understand that, should one choose to skip encounters, or should they find the writing uninteresting or bland, they won't have as much fun with the game. But that's okay, I think. I wrote this game and designed it with a specific niche in mind.

But regardless, thanks again for your input!

Oh yeah! The encounters were really well designed to be honest, anyway after played once against a particular enemy you'd surely avoid further encounters with that creature, since some took a bit of time, and I'm pretty sure that *some* players would like less random combat encounters and more story... dunno maybe because combat in rpgmaker game is often seen as a sort of "time-waster" (especially if we talk of random enounters!). The idea was good, I just would use fixed encounters to ensure that every creature is obligatory met only once, but well that was my experience! Hehe! For the rest the game was pretyt cool, I liked a lot the first "office-hell" area, a whole game could be based around that part only!

If you played 1hour, this was probably not the most recent demo. From what I saw from the 2018 demo (the last to date?), I had around 6hours and I hadn't finished it.
The dev is not the most active on social media, but the game is still being worked on and about to release (maybe in 1 or 2 years).
Ow yeah probably. The demo here is the 2016 one not the 2018 you mentioned, also I know that rpgmaker2003 saves does not list the gameplay hours, so I MAY be wrong. Or MAYBE I missed something... heh there could be various reasons!
Hello!
Thank you a lot for the review, it makes me happy.
I'm glad to tell you the writting has been redone as well since 2016, my english improved haha. But I plan to find an english native to proof read everything once the game is completed as well.

And yes, the project is not forgotten and will be releases( eventually!).
Out of curiousity, where did you find this old 1 hour demo? Because on the project page on rpgmaker.net I only listed the last demo, called "demo 3" which is way longer because I wanted to avoid people to download an older version. I'm confused.

Uhm I'm pretty sure I got the demo for a french site like alex d'or or oniromancie, I guess... it was some time ago and my error was not to check the version here! By the way I'll wait for the next demo or the complete thing so I can rectify my review of course!

Ahahahahaha. SAME! Even if I was young and I was traumatized by SKELETONS (like the woman from Uninvited and the death scene from Shadowgate, and that ominous music). Well you are right some puzzles were pretty cool OTHERS where terrible... (the replica of a shooting star THAT TURNS INTO a real shooting star AND IS THE ONLY WAY TO kill a wyvern???? What? WHY?).

Hah hah hah. I defend Nintendo's scheme to sell more Nintendo Power subscriptions. It also makes you realize that the RPG genre was founded by Dungeons and Dragons enthusiasts. I emailed Darin Adler - the game's developer, for the answer because that is a really good question- Why do you kill the wyvern with the star? I'll let you know when I found out. Thank you again TheRPGmakerAddict for your review.

Ahahahaha thanks!

Anyway I learned that some things were later corrected: for example you originally had a Invisibility Spell to trick the Troll asking for a toll (IF I remember well!) and that was the ONLY part where you can use it with success (by the way the Troll still sees and kills you IF you attack after using the spell). I mean, countless creatures, and the invisibility spell works ONLY with the troll?

So they changed the invisibility spell into a short teleportation spell. Made more sense. Lol

Valora

I admit these pams give a really nostalgic feel! Really looking forward playing this game!

Sweet

Whoa! Another peculiar game! Really curious to try it!

it's finally out! COOL!

I am really excited you played my game and made a nice and fair review.

When I was younger, I really enjoyed the ICOM Simulations/MacVenture games on NES. I really enjoyed Dejavu, Uninvited, and Shadowgate (I have one friend who raves about Shadowgate.) Shadowgate was my thematic approach to the puzzle solving and getting into traps. I also went wild into telling the stories in the Library of Knowledge. My favorite puzzles were the king's coffin (for the comedy really,) the closing wall (that was a technical breakthrough for me)and the shopkeeper puzzle. I had a few more mechanic ideas, but I had to be time sensitive, and I am glad to have the game completed in time.

I'm still working on my mapping and battle mechanic balance, but I am pretty comfortable on my event scripting and writing. Thematically, I turn towards comedy/adventure more than horror. If you want a good laugh with another respectfully short game, I would recommend you play my other game: "Don't Kill the CEO." No puzzles or frustration, just a laugh out loud story.

Oh well some maps were actually good like the outdoor entrance or the library!
Concenring humor... well there was some like in Shadowgate, BUT I totally expect a BAD ENDING
I'll check that other game too then!

Thank you for making your review of my game and giving me my first three stars on RMN. TheRpgmakerAddict- You have inspired me to keep working on Crystal Catch. It's a game and series I want to complete. I am honored that you played my game to completion and provided the historical context mixed with a balanced review.

Nice! Looking forward next games! THANKS

Thank you for your review. I truly appreciate that, even though it is not your kind of game. Nicely written as well. My goal was to give the player an adventure. Combat wasn’t my main focus. They are quick and simple. The focus was diversity in puzzles and side quests, never giving the feeling of doing the same thing. But I think this is even more present in the later dungeons. There I was able to go all out.

By the way, based on where you find the shield, I can see that you've played on an older version. The start of the game has been changed to not force the player to first go to the village and instead immediately go to the rest of the dungeon. A puzzle in dungeon 5 was also changed in that same update.

Yep! I played this game some time ago, anyway I should re-try it then if there were some changes! By the way it was good! Really... I'm always skeptic when I see a rpgmaker action game. But as I just said this was really good!
