UPRC'S PROFILE

I'm more or less not on RMN anymore and haven't been for over a year (contrary to belief, it's not over the AI rules - that's just the straw that broke the camel's back). Find me on Discord and/or my games on Itch: https://uprc.itch.io/

How does running from battles work in VX Ace?

In the previous RPG Makers that I've worked with, we were able to quickly and easily set up a predetermined battle to have conditional branches for whether or not the player won the battle or ran away. I haven't been able to spot anything like this in VX Ace, but I would need it for the game I am working on because:

1. I'm using touch encounters.
2. The game needs to track battles won and/or monsters killed which I want the game to calculate after the battle ends.

So here's what I am wondering... In VX Ace, what happens if you use the escape command against a predetermined encounter? Will the event continue processing past the battle, or will the event reset itself? If the event doesn't reset, how would it differentiate between the battle running from or winning a battle?

(I can't poke around because I'm not at home. Hoping that those who know VX Ace well will be able to provide an answer so that I can get straight to work on battles later rather than trying to figure out how this works.)

So, RMN, what do you guys like to eat for snacks?

It is 7:39 AM and I am sitting here eating my new favourite snack food because I didn't have time to prepare anything to eat this morning. This snack is pretty much just a bag of awesomeness, especially if you like nuts and have a bit of a sweet tooth.

So what is this tasty treat? It is this bag of joy:

I usually don't even like cranberries at all, but combined with chocolate and vanilla almonds? FLAVOUR EXPLOSION! I find this combination to be an incredibly delightful treat. It's a lot less dull than a standard bag/can of nuts and there's none of the guilt that comes from eating a bag of chips, pretzels, or other such snack foods. I think that the "Back to Nature" brand belongs to Kraft Canada, so it may be hard to find it elsewhere. If so, find the closest thing you can to this delicious bag of nuts!

So that's what I've been enjoying lately. What about you guys? What do you eat when you want to get something in your bellies but don't quite feel that it's meal time?

How does this futuristic setting sound?

I don't think I'll be starting anything soon, but I have a basic premise and setting for what I'd like to use for a project. This is sort of like a rough draft since it's all in point form. I'd just like to know, what do you folks think? I have some character and story ideas in mind, but none of those are a part of what I have here.

1. Humans live underground due to the surface world becoming too polluted.

2. Despite the human race trying to start fresh all over again, qualities such as greed, power, and ruthlessness determine success in life. Those who do not trample over others to get ahead are often left behind in poverty-striken slums.

3. Medical research has become so advanced that immortality is now attainable due to transplants being possible for any part of the body at all, and rejections have become a thing of the past.

4. To avoid the cluttering of garbage or increase in pollution, all human waste (garbage and sewage) is shot to the sun in a very low cost rocket at the start of every month.

5. Electricity is now generated from thermal energy harnessed from the core of the planet. Solar power is also used extensively. Before going underground, the human race set up a vast and complex system of solar panels across the globe, gathering sunlight at all hours of the day and sending it underground.

6. Crime in the slums is almost out of control, but those who live comfortably and outside of the slums ignore the problems of the poor almost entirely. Those in control have adopted a sort of survival of the fittest mantra. They believe that if you can't survive in the slums, then that's just basically too bad for you! If anyone dies in the slums, it is viewed as population control (due to the human race no longer wishing to have such a large global population). However, if deaths occur outside of the slums, it is investigated very thoroughly and anyone found to be guilty of orchestrating a murder will then be murdered themselves.

7. The governments are now all dictatorships, as it is believed that this is the best way to govern the new underground civilization. Warfare between underground nations never really occurs due to some nations being completely cut off from others. All nation basically leave each other alone and they are expected to fend for themselves.

8. There are only five pre-underground nations still in existence. They are Australia, Canada, China, Japan, and Russia (which absorbed Scandinavia, Ukraine, and the United Kingdom). Many nations did not last after transitioning to the underground for various reasons (finances, rebel uprisings, etc.) while others, such as the United States, decided that they didn't need to tough it out underground and stayed above ground.

9. On the subject of nations that stayed above ground, none of them would prosper. The only nations that still go by their original names and are above ground are Alaska (broken off from USA due to inability to travel there safely anymore), Brazil, France, Germany, Greece, India, Italy, Mongolia, Spain, and the United States. All of these nations have broken down and are entirely self-governed now. Some are horrific places to live filled with anarchy and cannibalism while others simply tough out the conditions, surviving off of an endless supply of illegal substances, prostitution, and more. The average lifespan above ground is now between 30 and 50, though many people of all ages become terminally ill and die quickly. The population of the surface is in rapid decline.

10. Of the underground nations, Australia and China are the less desirable of the five to live in. The others are all considered quite well off for various reasons. Canadians are the healthiest of the underground dwellers due to having an impressively advanced water filtration system that draws from their massive reserves, and they are reluctant to share any information or secrets regarding their water systems with other nations. Japan on the other hand is the most technologically advanced and harnesses the most electricity (often at half the cost and effort required by other nations). Russia is well off simply because they have immense manpower that is able to guarantee that all of their zones are well administered and maintained.

11. Highly advanced security systems and expertly trained soldiers both protect the underground from the surface dwellers who try to free themselves of the horrors of living above ground. No known intruders from the surface have ever made it into the underground.

Just sniffing around to see if you guys think it sounds decent or not. Points 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 11 are all set in stone. For points 8, 9, and 10 I'm a bit on the fence about. If I use real locations then it adds an air of familiarity to the setting, but part of me feels like making up names for the underground nations.

Alternative to using Cherry's font changer?

So I recently updated RPG Maker 2003 (yes, it took me that long) and replaced my RPG_RT for Blackmoon Prophecy to make sure it runs as smoothly as possible and without any issues when I finish the game... BUT...

I lost my font and am stuck with the default Gothic/Mincho ones. I was using a SimSun font, but I think I might want to go for one that looks a little Final Fantasy-esque. The problem, however, is that Cherry's font changer isn't working for me.

Since it's in German, I have no idea what's not working. I'm not home, so I'll describe this as best as possible and will provide a better description later when I'm able to if the problem isn't solved/an alternative isn't known.

I enter the the font name into the field where I input a font name and then hit test. I then get an error. I forget what it says, but it was fairly generic looking. When I would try to hit the apply button at the bottom, I get an error that mentions the RTP.

I tried reinstalling RPG Maker as well as the RTP, but nothing changed. I still get the error that mentions the RTP, and the test buttons yield errors as well.

Is there another way to replace the fonts, or is Cherry's font changer pretty much the only easy way?

EDIT: Found a post about the same issue I'm having. It was never resolved.

I need someone to pixel my final bosses for me!

Yes sir.

No I'm not on the verge of finishing my game, but I'd like to get this out of the way so that I don't get delayed later on by not having proper monster graphics in place.

Basically I'm just looking for someone willing to sprite some larger monster graphics (Final Fantasy fangame, so naturally they have to take up a fair amount of the left side of the screen) for me. I only need two, and I can be very specific with the details that I have in mind for them.

If there's anyone here who is willing to do it for free then right on, but I'll also take on anyone who would want to do this as a commissioned project.

If interested, reply or send me a message. Also show me what you're capable of because I don't want to unexpectedly get weird Colecovision quality sprites or something.

Would this idea be better as a linear or non-linear experience?

Thought about making a blog post out of this, but I suspect I'll get better/more replies in this forum so here I go.

The project I'm currently working on is a valkyrie game. I'm trying to distance it from others such as Valkyrie Profile, and it's taking a bit of thinking to accomplish this. The overall tone of the game is pretty lighthearted and a few other things set mine apart from others, but there's one specific thing I'm debating how to handle.

Now, I've structured the story in a way that it could be really non-linear or as linear as most RPGs are. New party members are all Einherjar that the main hero gathers, which is pretty similar to Valkyrie Profile, but here's the thing... VP uses a very non-linear approach to its gameplay and various characters can be recruited at different times and such. My original idea was to go with this, but I could also go with a plot driven story where the valkyrie heroine has to venture around the world to specific dungeons or towns to progress the story and Einherjar could be found at these locations.

I'm trying to decide which approach to take. Which one sounds better?

1. Non-Linear: Main story takes a back seat as exploration is encouraged. Go anywhere you want whenever you want. Find Einherjar in various locations and recruit them in any order and at any time. The recruiting of Einherjar would be completely optional and some characters could very well be missable.

2. Linear: Experience is heavily plot driven. Player can still venture anywhere right away, but must go to locations in a specific order to progress the story and obtain Einherjar. The recruiting of Einherjar would be storyline events. No characters would be missed except one or two who would be completely optional.

Ability to delete own posts?

Just wondering if this has ever been considered?

We're pretty much all adults here, so I figure we can probably moderate our own posts. The main reason I'm asking is because I accidentally posted twice and I so badly wanted to delete the second post but was unable to.

RPG Maker 2003 error when battle testing a new character

Never had this happen before and I'm pretty confused by it, so I figured I'd ask here. I'm not at home now, so I can't say word for word what the error is that I've been getting, but here is the basic summary...

I've been battle testing the first character of a new project an awful lot, and I've had absolutely no errors or anything of the sort yet. The character works flawlessly and I've been having a good deal of fun working on her, but I needed to make a second character since the player will have two party members very early in and I need to balance the battles.

So, after working on the second character's battle charset and such for about an hour, they were ready to be thrown in for testing the balance of early battles. I set up the character with their charset, battle charset, and faceset but didn't bother to set any initial equipment, skills or stats and then I headed over to the monster formation tab to start a battle test just to see how they animated and looked in a proper fight when getting hit, defending, etc. This is where the problem occurs...

Whenever I try to test a battle with the new character, I can't even get the test battle to initialize. An error pops up immediately saying something like "event referenced a battle animation that does not exist" and then crashes. I can't for the life of me figure out what's causing this since the new character is set up like this at the moment:
1. No equipment.
2. No skills.
3. Charset, battle charset, face all set.
4. Battle charset animations are all set for various status ailments in the conditions tab.
5. They do have an "unarmed" battle animation.

The monster group I've tried testing doesn't have any character specific skills to use or anything, so I can't see how they would clash.

Anyone know what could possibly be triggering this? I've never had this problem occur in all my years of using this damn program. My only guess is that something in the items or skills tabs is causing some kind of bizarre conflict... Or for some reason something that doesn't even exist in my database is referencing a deleted battle animation since I removed all animations and started fresh (I only have about six battle animations in the animations tab). I honestly can't make heads or tails of this. Anyone know what this problem is?

EDIT: I'm strongly suspecting that it is the game trying to call upon a deleted battle animation, even though such a thing shouldn't be happening. I'll just increase the array size of my battle animations from 6 to something much larger and then test the battle again when I'm home. Anyone else think this is probably the cause of the error?

I need ideas for superheroes/superheroines

I thought of something that could actually be ridiculously fun to work on, something that I can try to let my imagination run wild with. I want to be creative and original with a game, and I haven't done that for a long time. I want to make a superhero-cenric RPG, but not based on anything copyrighted or trademarked. No DC, Marvel, etc. I want to make a totally original world of superpowered heroes and such.

I'm already coming up with a big list of potential names of male and female superheroes and what kind of powers they could have, but I want the sheer scope of this to be pretty big. I'm not aiming for epic or anything, I just want diversity so that the player wouldn't be going up against the same ten villains over and over again.

Really all I'm looking for are ideas to use. Nothing really well thought out or descriptive, just little bits I could use to fill out my own little superhero universe. Just random heroes and villains I could use.

Basically, here's all I'm looking for:

Name/Gender/Power. Anything additional would be okay, but isn't really required at all such as whether they're good or evil (the name would probably give it away anyway). As I said, I just want to add a bunch of potential heroes/villains to my growing list that I'm working on now, and it would also give me an opportunity to see what kind of basic ideas people here would churn out which in turn would let me know what kind of heroes/villains various people would find interesting.

Not looking for carbon copies of DC/Marvel characters, but they're great to use as inspiration. One of the hero ideas I've already come up with, Titanium Man, is predictably inspired by Iron Man for example. Titanium Man would be quite different of course, because being too similar would be a bad thing and look really cheap/lazy/whatever.

So! Anyone want to throw any ideas at me?

I feel like having a go at "Let's Try" videos

So yeah. Subject. Self explanatory.

I'm calm, fair, and observant. Most importantly of all, I'm not bat shit crazy or too lazy to skip things that should be shown.

I want to give a game (and Let's Try) a shot, so fire away any suggestions. I'd prefer RM2000/2003 games since I prefer them (they have a soft spot in my heart, even bad ones).

Suggestions of games to try:
1. Forever's End by NicoB
2. Eternal Paradise by Ephiam
3. Resident Evil: After History by Felipe_9595
4. Tales from Zilmurik I: Origin by Corfasius
5. Dungeon Champion by Antilurker77

The first game I've tried is Eternal Paradise by Ephiam. I was able to do three videos before deciding to call it quits with the game (I explain why at the end of the third video).
