UPRC'S PROFILE

I'm more or less not on RMN anymore and haven't been for over a year (contrary to belief, it's not over the AI rules - that's just the straw that broke the camel's back). Find me on Discord and/or my games on Itch: https://uprc.itch.io/

Cell phones.

Cell phones are becoming more and more a part of our daily lives. As such, I have a good feeling that every RMN member probably has a cell phone. So, let's discuss phones! Talk about your current phone and why it's awesome, why your previous phone sucked, or maybe even what new phone you're thinking about purchasing.

My current phone is a Galaxy Nexus. I've only had it for about a week and a half after having a BlackBerry Bold for close to three years. There's really no comparison between the two phones at all. I'll maintain that the BlackBerry Bold is a great phone to have in a corporate environment, but as a personal phone? No, not at all. BlackBerry phones are utter garbage for personal use because most of the features RIM incorporates into their phones are geared towards businesses and corporations.

I'm really loving my Galaxy Nexus though, it's a fantastic device to have as a personal phone. It has already replaced my iPod Touch as my portable gaming platform of choice (I don't have the devotion for a DS or Vita, and my PSP collects dust). I feel like the Google Play store has a lot less useless junk on it than the Apple equivalent on their iOS devices (I could be wrong, I don't know). I've found some much more useful radio apps through Google Play. My only complaint is that Apple seems to have snagged better games on their service (I want Kingdom Rush on my Android, damn it), but oh well.

I haven't had any complaints about my Nexus yet other than it's hard adjusting to a touchscreen keypad after using a physical one on my BlackBerry for a few years, but that's not really a strike against the phone. Having a touchscreen phone is way better because it's much easier to use and getting things done in a timely manner is faster and more efficient than it is with a phone that utilizes a trackpad.

Here's a question to other Galaxy Nexus owners. When I used to completely power off my BlackBerry, it would always turn back on if I had set an alarm to go off at a certain time. Does the Nexus do this as well? If I set my alarm for 5:30 AM and turn the phone completely off, will it turn back on at 5:30?

What phones do you guys have? If you don't have a phone at the moment, which one are you hoping to get your hands on?

Motivation sapping dungeons/maps... how do you deal with them?

As creators, we've probably all had to make at least one dungeon or town for our games that was just plain unpleasant to map for whatever reason. What do you guys do when you're posed with a mandatory location you have to map that just doesn't seem fun at all to make and saps you of your motivation? Do you put the game aside for a while and wait until you'll be excited enough to work on the game to overlook the tedious nature of the dungeon? Do you force yourself through the procedure of mapping the location right away? Or do you do something drastic, such as throwing your arms up and deciding to quit because you're not having fun?

BONUS QUESTION: What locations do you find put you into this mindset? What kind of places demotivate you when you have to map them out? What advice would you give your players to help them through these places in your game (if they feel the same way as you)?

Now for the other edge of the sword.

As players, I'm 100% positive that we've all ventured into a dungeon in someone's game and thought to ourselves, "this dungeon REALLY sucks and I don't want to play through it at all, but I have to see it out because the overall game isn't that bad." How do you guys deal with these places? Do you put the game aside to play something else for a bit? Do you do as I said in the quotations and try to force your way through so that you can get back to enjoying the good parts of the game? Or do you suddenly lose all interest in the game and shelf it for good?

BONUS QUESTION: What kind of areas in RPG Maker games typically make you feel this way and are difficult to play through? What advice would you give to your fellow RMN users to make these unfun locations a little more entertaining?

Anyone want to make a title screen for me?

So I'm doing a big update to Blackmoon Prophecy and one of the things I want to do is throw in a new title screen that utilizes the classic crystal prelude theme.

The music is in place, but I find that I really struggle to make an "authentic" looking Final Fantasy-esque title screen. My attempts never look clean or sleek enough.

I was wondering if anyone would be willing to take a stab at making a title screen? Just a standard white background with black text. Google has many examples: https://www.google.ca/search?num=10&hl=en&site=imghp&tbm=isch&source=hp&biw=1280&bih=852&q=final+fantasy+title+screen&oq=final+fantasy+title+screen&gs_l=img.3..0.265.5484.0.5609.36.18.4.12.13.1.172.1828.9j8.17.0...0.0...1ac.dqLLwJQUhTE

Behind the text I'd be interested in having a dragoon or a crescent moon. I really struggle with the gradient on these things and I'm sure someone could do much better.

Ideally I want to have the update ready in the next 10-24 hours. Any takers? I'll even be a swell guy and put your name in the special thanks.
nevermind

What is your biggest question in life?

I just thought of this topic idea after remembering an interview that Craig Ferguson had with Morgan Freeman recently. Morgan Freeman is narrating a new show that poses questions such as "is there life after death?"

Is there? It's a good question, but it's not the one I think about the most. Other people wonder things like... does God exist? Will we ever make contact with aliens? How much time do we have left on this planet?

My question doesn't exactly focus on humanity or even our planet. My question is a lot bigger than that, and I have a lot of fun thinking about it. My question is simply... is the universe really expanding all the time? Will it ever stop? If so, what will happen to it after all the stars in the entire universe burn out? I think about that a fair bit because the universe really is pretty fascinating. I could ponder about all of the celestial bodies and cool things that are out there in space, but the status of the universe is just much more exciting to me. Just what IS the universe? How can it keep growing larger all the time? And what lays OUTSIDE of the universe? When I think about these things, the concepts alone make my head hurt and it makes me realize just how small we are. Not just us as individuals or even our planet, but our entire solar system as well. It's pretty scary to think of just how minute and insignificant we are, and don't even get me started on the whole "multiverse" theory floating around.

Anyway, that's what is on my mind a lot. What sort of recurring questions do you guys dwell on?

How to stop fonts in VX Ace from becoming squished together?

So I've been working a lot on my game in VX Ace lately. The way that the maker sort of "squishes" text together to save room when a line contains so many letters usually doesn't bother me, but I'm filling up an achievements screen and it's getting kind of distracting to have some lines of text displaying fine while other lines of text are very compact.

If anyone doesn't know what I mean:

Is there a script or anything that can make VX Ace not do this with text?

Little things that can ruin your day?

I don't know why I am writing this topic because I'm in a pretty chipper mood this morning.

Anyway, what little things irk you guys when they occur? We're talking things that are enough to put a damper on your day, at least for a little while.

For me one thing that will ruin my mood is when I'm walking home from work and am crossing a crosswalk when I have the right away. Every now and then there will be some ass in a car who feels that their need to hurry to get home a whole minute earlier than usual somehow waives them of all right to be an alert and cautious driver who follows the rules of the road. All too often I may have halfway across the crosswalk when a car comes barreling down the street and flies past me honking their horn, missing me by perhaps a foot or two... but only because I'm smart enough to STOP when I know the car is coming. There are a few situations where, if I had headphones on or something, these idiots would have hit me. It makes me feel like dragging these people out of their cars and pointing up at the signal lights saying, "See that green little man that is lit up? And how everyone else in the adjacent lanes have stopped? That means it is MY turn to go, asshole." People who do this stick in my mind for the entire walk home and I'm sour about it when it occurs for a good 5-10 minutes afterwards.

Another thing is living only a few buildings down the street from a bar. I get up early every single morning, so you can only imagine how irate I probably get some nights when I'm trying to sleep and I hear drunks outside getting riled up over who knows what.

Dropping my coffee when I'm walking home or to work is always pretty awful too. It's basically $2 lost because I wasn't gripping the cup enough. I usually just sigh and walk away when this happens though, but it will grate on my nerves if I had a bad day.

How about you guys?

RMN is up! No, it's down. Now it's up! Oh wait... down again.

I've noticed lately that RMN doesn't load at times for me. Sometimes whatever browser I'm using just sits there idly saying "waiting for http://rpgmaker.net..." forever while other times I just get generic "cannot connect to website" error pages.

Was just curious about this since it's been happening to me on multiple computers in different locations as of late. Has the server been under a lot of stress or something of the sort?

The Secret World

Anyone else trying this MMO out? I know that a few RMNers have talked about the game before, but the game still seems incredibly obscure despite being released at the start of this month.

So what is The Secret World? An MMO set in modern times with some light horror elements. You play as a member of the Dragons, Illuminati, or Templars. I think the Dragons are a made up group, but surely we all at least a little bit about the Illuminati and Templars.

Anyway, the game plays pretty much like a standard MMO but has its own little twists on the genre. There is an experience bar, but you don't gain levels in this game. Gaining experience will instead grant you ability and skill points which you can use to develop your skills with different weapons and such.

Combat is like most MMOs but, in terms of flow and speed, I find that it is most like The Old Republic.

The best part about the game is easily the atmosphere which is REALLY nice. The first leveling zone is a town called Kingsmouth and it is a blast to explore. You get to see wander the abandoned streets and see zombies munching on corpses or sometimes chasing players up and down various streets. Missions are also given to you in voice acted cutscenes just like in The Old Republic, though player characters are silent protagonists in this game.

Overall I'm really liking the experience. I wrote more on the game here: http://reviewdepot.net/2012/07/09/the-secret-world-first-impressions/

Also here's a video of someone (not me) playing in Kingsmouth:

If anyone plays and feels like hitting me up, I'm Hank "Globex" Scorpio (who is my favourite one-off character on The Simpsons?) on the Daemon server.

The Jokes Topic

Because jokes are awesome, especially on stressful days. Here are a few that I really like.

There was this delicate young man who decided he would go and live in the countryside for a while and write poetry.
Several days after he moved in to a rented and isolated farm house there was a knock on the front door. He opened it and there stood a huge bearded man, ugly as sin, covered in cow manure, with great hairy arms, a pox marked face and a huge mottled bulbous nose.
"I'm your next door neighbour, " said the man. "And I'm here to tell you that tonight you are invited to a Welcoming Party."
The young man thanked him and wanting to be seen as a good neighbour said that he would certainly come along.
"Yeah, yeah,"said the man. "But I have got to tell ya, that there is goin' to be a lot of heavy drink'n."
The youing man said diplomatically that he was prepared to take his share of a tipple.
"Yeah, yeah," said his new neighbour. "But I have got to tell ya, that there is goin' to be a lot of fight'n."
The young man said that he was sure that he could counter any attempt at physical violence.
"Yeah, yeah," said the man. "But I got to tell ya, that there is goin' to be a lot of sex, a lot of sex, hard sex".
The young man said that he would do his best to be as convivial as possible.
Then he asked what the dress code would be.
"Ah, don't worry about that," said his new neighbour. "There's only the two of us."

A guy stuck his head into a barbershop and asked, "How long before I can get a haircut?"
The barber looked around the shop full of customers and said, "About 2 hours."
The guy left.
A few days later, the same guy stuck his head in the door and asked, "How long before I can get a haircut?"
The barber looked around at the shop and said, "About 3 hours."
The guy left.
A week later, the same guy stuck his head in the shop and asked, "How long before I can get a haircut?"
The barber looked around the shop and said, "About an hour and a half."
The guy left.
The barber turned to his friend and said, "Hey, Bob, do me a favour, follow him and see where he goes. He keeps asking how long he has to wait for a haircut, but he never comes back."
A little while later, Bob returned to the shop, laughing hysterically.
The barber asked, "So, where does he go when he leaves?"
Bob looked up, wiped the tears from his eyes and said,
"Your house!"

From a Teacher -- short and to the point.
In the world of hi-tech gadgetry, I've noticed that more and more people who send text messages and emails have long forgotten the art of capital letters.
For those of you who fall into this category, please take note of the following statement:
"Capitalization is the difference between helping your Uncle Jack off a horse and helping your uncle jack off a horse."

RMN Memes

This was done on another site I visit with pretty good success. Basically, poke fun at the site you're on using memes that are themed around it.

Mine may not be the best, but at least it will serve as a start!

Anyone else? As a general rule, I don't think that any should be outright mean spirited.

EDIT: I'm sorry Trihan, Tundra is just an easy target.
