UPRC'S PROFILE

I'm more or less not on RMN anymore and haven't been for over a year (contrary to belief, it's not over the AI rules - that's just the straw that broke the camel's back). Find me on Discord and/or my games on Itch: https://uprc.itch.io/

Idea for a high risk attack in VX Ace. Any scripts currently allow this?

Hey folks.

So I have an idea for an ability that I think could be interesting. It would essentially be the following...

1. Extremely low MP cost.
2. Above average/fairly high damage.
3. Hits a random enemy.
4. Has a different elemental property each time it is used.

It's the fourth point I'm stumped on. I'm at work so I can't stare at VX Ace, but I'm pretty sure that you can't make something use a different element each time it is used, right? Like the first round the skill is used, it inflicts fire damage. Second round it would inflict fire. Third round, something else. Totally random. This would require scripting, right? Are there any scripts that currently do anything like this? Allowing you to make a skill inflict random elemental damage each time it is used?

Mighty No. 9

Look guys, it's become an actual thing now!

For those who don't know what this is, Mighty No. 9 is a new platformer being made by Keiji Inafune (co-creator of Mega Man) and his new development team. Keiji knew what we all wanted, more Mega Man, and he's delivering the goods as best he can since Mighty No. 9 is pretty much Mega Man in everything but name. The above trailer has me really excited for this game. It looks pretty fun and oozes old school Mega Man goodness. The game's still early in development, so there will probably loads of refinements before the full release as well.

See, Capcom? It's not so hard to make a proper Mega Man game after all.

Mister Netflix, set course for new Star Trek series. Engage!

Anyone like Star Trek? Well, I sure as hell do. It's always made for fun science fiction on the small screen. I've recently been watching Deep Space Nine after ignoring it back when it was first airing and I'm falling in love with the characterization. With the exception of Dax, they've all got so much personality. While Trek series did get kind of stale with Enterprise, the writers have always been able to give life to some pretty great characters.

Anyway, we haven't had a Trek series since Enterprise ended in 2005. With Abrams' Trek movies doing so well in the mainstream, and with viewing figures for the Trek series being overwhelmingly good on Netflix, everyone's favourite streaming service has decided that they'd love to make a new series and have gone as far as to write to CBS, the company that currently holds the biggest slice of the Star Trek rights pie, to express their desire to make a new Star Trek series. CBS apparently gets on great with Netflix, which only makes this more likely to happen.

BUT! There is one potential obstacle! Viacom also partially owns the rights to Star Trek, and as the source article mentions, CBS + Viacom = ENEMIES. It also goes on to say that Viacom prefers to work with Amazon rather than Netflix. Still, I feel like this is probably a smaller obstacle than the article leads one to believe. With Netflix throwing their hat in the ring and saying that they want to make a new Trek series, it's really only a matter of time.

So how do you guys feel about this? Did you ever enjoy any of the Star Trek series? With renewed mainstream interest in Star Trek thanks to Abrams and his mass appeal takes on Trek, I think that a new series could do exceptionally well if set at the right time in the Trek timeline.

How do you feel about profanity in RPG Maker games?

Just got the idea for this topic after checking out random screenshots today and making a sort of :\ face at some of the lines of dialogue containing profanity. Basically, how do you guys feel about profanity both as a game maker and a game player?

People have said in the past that they don't mind profanity if it's done tastefully, but just what is tasteful profanity? I feel like tasteful and profanity are two words that extremely contradict one another!

I've always shunned myself from writing profanity in my games after I reached a certain level of experience with RPG Maker. In my younger years, there would often be a fuck here or a bitch there, but these days? Damn and hell are pretty much as profane as my characters will get. A lot of times, I feel like you just have to sit back and ask yourself, "does my character need to say fuck/shit here? Even if they're a form of degenerate/tough guy/etc?"

It often just feels really unnecessary, and I'm likely to take points off a game if it contains more swearing than I fancy simply because I find that it more often than not feels completely out of place in RPG Maker games. It just often comes across as being very hokey most of the time, especially since I get an "I curse just because I'm a bad ass" vibe from many characters who swear. I don't know, it just makes dialogue feel more... crude? Meanwhile, if you don't use profanity, you get to be more creative with your character's language. You can make up expressions that fit your own self created world that can define a character's displeasure more than a "FUCK YOU" or something.

How do you guys feel about it? Is there an amount of profanity in RPG Maker games that you consider to be an acceptable level? Do you like using it or not? What words do you guys like to use instead if you're averse to using profanity in your games?

Anyone feel like making me some facesets/portraits?

I'm in a bit of a weird position with Blackmoon Prophecy II, as I thought I had a portrait artist lined up a while ago, but from what I've heard they're tied up with other major projects (this was months ago). So, I'd like to find someone else who would like to make faceset portraits for me!

I'd need eleven portraits in total, roughly the size of Final Fantasy VI's portraits (they'd be resized by 200% in the end as well to match the fake low resolution of the game). If anyone out there thinks they could put together eleven sprites that would fit a Final Fantasy fangame, feel free to drop me a line!

The Game of Pessimism

Has there ever been an RPG made around here where the game's goal is to make the player feel doubtful and uncomfortable in their actions and decisions? Where just about anything the player does will result in the game trying to make them believe that they may not be doing a good thing?

Example, you've got a wealth of party members to choose from. I'm talking Craze-esque character selection, and you have to make a party. When you make one and you go to leave the room, the main character says randomized lines similar to the following REGARDLESS of who you picked. "Hmm... are we sure about this group? I'm not sure if we're up to the challenge with this set-up." Even with a party full of characters who look practically unstoppable on paper.

Or NPCs will downplay everything they sell, even items that are suspected to be VERY good. Quest givers and major allies would frequently insist that the party members are not ready for what is ahead, that they are walking to their deaths... even in the most basic dungeons.

Basically, the game is pessimistic at every chance it can get. Spell descriptions make every single one sound meager at best, every battle is viewed as an eternal struggle, and everyone around the party believes that they'll wind up dead.

So, has anyone ever been cruel enough to make such a game?

Yanfly's menu cursor not showing up for show choice?

So I encountered this earlier and, since Yanfly has been MIA for a while now, I figured maybe someone on here might know what's going on. I'm using Yanfly's Menu Cursor script and, overall, it's working pretty well. There's one problem though, no cursor shows up whenever I present the player with multiple dialogue options such as this:

Anyone encounter this? Or know what the heck is going on? The menu cursor script seems to work everywhere BUT here.

Anyone want to sprite ten faces for me?

So I'm working away on Blackmoon Prophecy 2 and, well before I even opened VX Ace, I knew that I wanted 100% custom faces. The problem with this is that I can't draw faces. At all.

What I'm looking for is someone who would be kind enough to volunteer to put together ten faces in a style that would be passable in a Final Fantasy-esque setting. I'd only need faces roughly the size of those in Final Fantasy VI. They would be blown up by 200% and would become slightly more pixelated, but this would keep them consistent with the resolution of the rest of the graphics which emulate 2k/2k3 resolution.

If anyone's interested, hit me up and I can provide all details for the characters such as their sprites for reference, their age, personality, etc.

Which game developers do you trust?

I had this discussion with a friend the other night on Skype after I realized I was extremely disillusioned by how exploiting players has become far more commonplace than it was in the past. It feels like there are just so few truly honest game developers left who gamers can really put all of their faith in. So, which developers do you guys feel can still be trusted almost without question?

I thought it over last night and settled on two developers. Coincidentally, I was playing a game made by one of them, Grand Theft Auto V/Online.

Rockstar never puts a foot wrong. Their games are always hugely expansive, remarkably detailed, and players are always given many freedoms and liberties. Rockstar isn't known to reach into our wallets more than they need to, either. Sure, Grand Theft Auto Online will have microtransactions, but can you blame them for it? The fact that Rockstar's being really nice and giving their players $500,000 in GTA Online for the numerous servers in GTA Online as their way of saying sorry is really nice. I've been playing casually for a week now and I've only just broken $100,000. Considering that they'll be offering cash cards on the respective stores of our consoles, this is a really nice gesture. They're essentially putting off the need for anyone to make any microtransactions for a while, and good on them for doing so!

The second developer is Bethesda. While they may have been partly responsible for pointless DLC existing (lol horse armor), they've rarely ever put a foot wrong. Their games always sell in droves upon droves, and absolutely nobody can deny the high quality of their games. The fact that Bethesda shrugs and lets their players basically do ANYTHING they want with the creation tools, almost negating anything Bethesda could do in some cases, is great of them as well. The fact that Bethesda treats the modding community as such an integral and important part of their playerbase is really worth noting. Not enough developers do that these days, with many of them taking the Apple approach and saying, "No, you're not allowed to tinker with our product. If you get tired of the same old content, you have to wait for us to make more for you." I don't approve of that stance in this day and age, especially with DLC becoming more and more prevalent.

Honourable mention to Naughty Dog for creating some of the absolute best games this generation (or perhaps even ever!) and not making too many stupid decisions. Sony's extraordinarily lucky to have Naughty Dog firmly in their pocket. Valve also deserves a mention just for being Valve.

So, how about you guys? Who do YOU trust?

Changing something on the VX Ace menu screen...

So, I love this one font that I use because it reminds me of older RPGs while still looking slightly modern. The thing is, the font I am using doesn't have the proper arrow character on the equip screen that shows up along the stats columns which denotes stat changes. See here if I suck at wording it:

Is there any easy way to change which character in the font the game uses for the circled bit? Ideally, I'd just like to use the > arrow character (shift + period) since that shows up just fine. Even changing it to an icon would be handy, since I could easily sprite an arrow to go with the font. Is there anything in the script database that I can go in and change quickly to do so, or does this require an actual script?
