Ack, the lack of texture and overwhelming contrast on that picture and your profile really hurts my eyes. Where did the level lightning go? How in the world did you get the level to look like that in Acknex when without lights, the level still gets normal shaded in fullbright?

Somehow that extremely fancy 'I' looks like a 7, a J, and somewhat a G, but nothing close to an I.

8-bit lightning and ice sound effects

That sound generator can do 8-bit-ish Ice and Holy effects, just fiddle with all the sliders until it sounds right. It's got more control over sound than what you actually did get in the NES or GameBoy DMG sound unit hardware.
