The 12 days of RMas

On the 2nd day of RMas
my true love gave to me
2 battle sprites
and a copy of RMMV.

Video game franchises that need to return

Wild Arms and Breath of Fire would be nice as well.

Challenging RPGs - where are they?

The first Final Fantasy was a challenge, mainly because of the system's limitations and it was my first endeavor into playing an actual TB rpg. But even a veteran could find it challenging to some degree:

1. Lack of saves (only in towns and maybe tents or houses?)
2. Being able to wander into an area of tough monsters you are not equipped or leveled up enough to handle (you got the airship early on and was probably a bit more open and less linear than most others in the series)
3. You could set yourself up with a challenging class (all white mages)

Otherwise, the only other one I've grown frustrated with over time was the NES port remake of Final Fantasy III for the DS, but that was for all the wrong reasons.

What's the one cancelled game that you wish was finished?

author=dethmetal
My first answer is A Blurred Line, but apparently it may not be cancelled and may still be in production. Lysander86 still comes back and says he's working on it every now and then.

A Blurred Line was way overhyped for me, at least with gameplay. I loved the first half of the game, not so much the second half, and I hated that game within the game scenario.

But otherwise, story-wise it was great and I wanted to see the ending so bad. The fact that Lys continues to taunt us, though, that makes me a bit more stressed than if he had just declared it cancelled.

Necropolis was the second game. My gosh, it was probably one of the best retro-styled horror games I've played, and still one of the best demo's.

The Akara games from VX. There's 3 of them, and they all end on cliff hangers. I was hoping for one final one, but the developer said it wasn't likely to happen. I may just say to hell with it and do a sort of fan game of it myself one day.

And that leaves me to a final thought:

If we can make fan games of existing commercial rpg's, why can't we do the same for these? If a game we wanted is cancelled or left in a vague void of uncertainty, why not do a fan tribute? If the developer objects, sure, remove it, but many of them probably would be okay with the effort.

Single Area RPG

make it one tower
that's tall and has a lot of doors
and spans dimensions with each door leading to one which is a whole world in itself
uh

So basically Castle Oblivion, although that has a few areas prior to the castle.

Games you hate or dislike?

Final Fantasy 2 That game is just bull crap and a crap stain on one of my favorite game series ever.

Assuming you are referencing the Famicom version. Which is such a shame since it had a lot of potential:

1. A unique leveling system that could have changed the way future rpg's were handled, had it been done right.
2. A heavy story-driven game (for its time). Not a lot of NES games could hold that claim, not even with rpg's. Granted, the story is a bit too cliche by today's standards, but for its time it was probably one of the best.

Now, had the system not been so random and the player could gauge what actions to take to level up a particular stat (ie., attack 10 more times and you get a boost in attack, defend 10 more times and you get a boost in defense, etc), I think it would have been better.

But it was such a broken mess, almost to the point that I think it bombed.

As for what I dislike. I hate heavy grinding. I don't mind a bit of it here and there; it's natural for rpg's to require some, especially to try and gain a couple of levels to tackle the next cave or buy upgraded items.

But some of the early ones literally had you fighting for long periods of time in one spot just because you needed to be a certain level or have enough gold to buy the right equipment or spell to take on the first boss.

Dragon Quest games were the worst for the time, although the current ports seemed to fix this issue without requiring huge amounts of level grinding. And I remember getting to the Marsh Cave in Final Fantasy and spending way too much time there having to grind for levels, money, and antidotes. Lord forbid if you died in that cave and lost everything, so better also grind for a house as well, because saving could only be done in town otherwise (couldn't even save on the world map).

A Reminder about Duplicate Accounts

Guys, we all know it was Caz's abs that did Decky in, not liberty. :D

So does that mean an official no to ever seen the completion of Carlsev Saga? Or does that mean Craze now has the responsibility of finishing it up?

[RMVX ACE] How to make items only usable by one character

In all fairness, the act of removal seemed to have started with XP, once scripts became the norm. VX managed to do it much worse. At least with Ace, they added back in things that should have never been removed to begin with while adding in a few more features.

But two things with 2K/3 I've always missed was indicating who can use what item, and having some control over how battles started (which helped to control ways to start a pre-emptive battle). Both can be done by scripts, but it was nice having them by default.

The official English 2k3 version is out!

The new version of RM2K has had a lot of updates and upgrades applied to it, which RM2K3 hasn't. The section were you set how in-battle dialogue works is a good example, because it now allows you to move around each element at will. Far more powerful than the illegal version of RM2K is. I think that the new version of RM2K is almost superior to the new version of RM2K3, bar the fact it lacks some of the eventing commands that RM2K3 has.

I concur. 2K doesn't have the sideview that 2K3 has, but with some eventing it can be somewhat accomplished, even if it comes off a bit odd. But since 2K seems to be still going pretty big in Japan, it would make sense that it still gets updated when 2K3 does not.

My only problem with either of these is that I'm too lazy to mess with the whole image issues (with size and color depth), and I've only ever used the illegal versions just to play games rather than make games; still, purchasing the legal version would at least grant me the RTP, which at $20 is a pretty good steal and the audio is still superior to that of VX and Ace (in my opinion).

Sadly one of the features removed from 2K/3 and never added back in. But there are scripts and other work arounds.
