Dark Design games is a UK based video game design and developer (Jake Jackson) that aspires young minds and alike from entry-level video game design, as basic as 2D right through to high-end and consumer level 3D game design.

We work on games per request and we also make visits to schools, colleges and institutions across the country to help teach all aspects of game design to those intrested, using packages such as Alice, Granny, GameStudio, FPS Creator, AGS and RPG Maker VX.

One of our most popular and successful projects to date is Mystic Quest Remastered, a re-imagined and completely re-developed edition of the 1992 SQUARE release, Final Fantasy Mystic Quest.

Ok, another update!

Managed to sort out the bestiary after getting loads of errors, so that's done. Phew!
Still having problems sorting out the jump tile blocks. I'm getting there though.

And...duh duh duh! I said I was'nt going to do it but I think I've found a way - hookshotting with the Dragon Claw! As we speak I'm modding the giant tree map to see if it works well. Fingers crossed!

Good morning everyone, and a status update for you all!

Been working on Benjamin's jump since last night and having terrible trouble with the tile ID's and which ones he can and can't jump over. Annoying as hell but I'm determined to do it. With the jump action and hopefully when it's done I'll be changing some of the maps around to make use of it (Giant Tree , Lava Dome, Doom Castle mainly).

Ah also I've been working on the Bestiary option in the menu as well which will add some more goodness to the game :)

What are the chances of 1.5 being save-game compatible with 1.4? I'm pretty far into the game with all party members 55+
It's compatible for FUTURE events, but not for things that's happened in the past. (So, don't save near foresta if you started the game pre 1.4) All your current progress will still apply.

Aye, like I said; understandable. I used them predominantly in the original MQ because they kicked so much ass :D In this one? I'm loving my current Knight Sword .. the paralyse effect is downright lethal and has helped me through more than one tough encounter.

Don't worry too much about the chainshot, it was really only used for puzzles anyhow - so adding it into the game at this stage would mean having to rewrite some of the maps to accommodate the new puzzle element. I love the sound of the Battlegrounds, with the reward aspect rather than the EXP aspect as they were used for in the original, but if there is one thing that is possible to be added; a Scan/Libra spell ^_^

Other than that? Excellent work so far! Absolutely loving the game --- though if I never see another Sahagin for the rest of my life, I will die a happy man XD

Yes, the dragon claw would be very hard to implement, so I'm not going to do it LOL!
At the end of a few of the battlefields you are going to see some pretty awesome bosses that, after defeating them, you'll get some beastly items :P
Thanks man, It really is hard work keeping up with the demands and fixing stuff. Hopefully this 1.5 version will be the one staying for a while whilst I sort out the new additions :)

I used the Bombs religiously in SNES MQ, multi-enemy hit? Om nom!

Bombs are for single-enemies this time around (understandable :P) and they are 2h weapons? No shield when using Bombs?

Well due to thier high power there's got to be some sacrifice. Other wise it would be TOO easy :P
Plus if you think about it, you cant really hold a shield while you are trying to light a fuse and throwing a lethal object away from you :P

OK status update.

I've fixed the bugs that everyone mentioned this morning and currently I'm working on the battlefields (whoohoo). For each of the battlefields there is going to be an end boss (round 10) with some really good prizes you won't wanna miss.

After I've done that I'm going to go over Wintry Cave and add events where Phoebe gives you the Cat Claw. A little bit of a dissapointement for you guys is that it's not possible for me to implement the dragon claw hookshotting (i have no idea). So climbing with X is probably the best I can come up with right now.

After I've done that, the next thing to do is go right over the whole lot again and make a few improvements here and there. After that, I'll be creating a launcher for the game, and then ZIP it all up into the 1.5 installer.

If theres ANYTHING that needs sorting out that you have noticed in the 1.4 update please tell me before I upload the 1.5 version, since after I've done that I'll be working on the FMVs so you may not hear from me for a while.

Yeaaaaaaah, #2 was my own fault. I avoided entering Bone Palace since I figured I'd get my ass kicked... but then I remembered that Tristam joins you in there and was much higher level, oops. I want his Life Drain skill, it's insanely kick ass! XD

Few things I've noticed so far:

1. In Level Forest there's a slime enemy stuck behind some trees because there's no route to him. The trees don't have an above-hero tile to symbolise going behind them, which means you can't access.

2. Holy crap the enemies do a lot of damage in the Desert Area, gone from being 5-30 damage around Foresta to 100-150 damage in the Desert.

3. No sleeping in random beds. I guess this is offset by the free stays in the Inn though.

4. Battlegrounds aren't there any more?? *shock*

5. NO CONTINUE?! That was one of the more distinguishing features of MQ; the option to continue back at the start of a fight if you're defeated. MQ was a tough game sometimes and this one seems to be even tougher :D


Either way, the game is still brilliant and I really am having a great time ^_^


1. Thanks, just looked at the map and noticed it, stupid me LOL :P
2. Yeah they do because at this point you will have tristam with you, it's also to make the journey across to sand temple that little bit harder, but yeah I could reduce it a bit
3. XD I never got that concept so I put the inns in. :P
4. I'll add the battlefields to my to do list. Although there's random encounters I could make battlegrounds quite easily and make good rewards. Thanks for that suggestion
5. Sadly I'd like this in there as well but it doesn't seem possible to do that with the RPG maker engine. I may find a way though.
