Detective Games - Risking the Unwinnable

Now this is an article I can get behind! I'm working on a detective RPG of my own (although much simpler in scope when it comes to case-solving as I also have other elements of gameplay to incorporate) and have run into similar problems as those discussed. Your guys' conversation is similar to thoughts and concepts I've come up with so it seems I'm on a right track in that regard. Though I've recently felt I'm using too many red herrings (although this seems to be a side effect of being able to name and convict anyone as the criminal with enough evidence).

"Insight crafting" seems like the natural progression of old games like Clue and is definitely a prototype I'd enjoy seeing. And yeah, custom scripts aren't really necessary as far as I've seen in development in Ace(outside of mouse scripts and the like) since there are easy conditional branch and key item commands. Which should be more than enough to get something to show a prospective programmer.

Hope the project comes along in a useful way! I would love to see more authentic detective games. The genre needs some love.

The Top RM Games Of All Time

author=harmonic
Yep, leave it up to Craze to come out swinging at me because I'm me!

Yes, I understand it's different audiences. I was making a passing observation on the rather insular and specific sample set happening in this thread. Hardly any actual fucks given.

Skyborn isn't "crappy." It's actually really good. It is quite popular on Steam. But I understand why you have to say that because...

It's obvious that the old guard of RMN doesn't like it when commercial games get popular, specifically if the author is Amanda, me, or Aldorlea. Can't you just be happy for your fellow RM users who took a different path with the software?

So, uh, as someone that enjoyed Skyborn and Deadly Sin 2 and am glad to see a developer use the engine to commercial success making fun games, I think you're coming off pretty harsh here? (I don't think Craze's "crappy" comment was aimed at you but rather the other stuff that is starting to pile up on Steam).

I mean this topic was mostly active nearly two years ago and is asking the community here for their favorite RPG Maker games. It only follows that those who post here would be more interested in the free RM games right? Not to mention the ones on top seem to be the nostalgic picks of the old 2k/2k3 days. You'd probably see different results if this topic was more recent. And definitely if this poll was on Steam. So no biggie right?

The Featured Game Thread

Oh hey, it's almost the end of the month. If a game hasn't been decided on yet may I suggest Born Under the Friggin' Rain? For being legit amazing?

Information Guy: Status Effects 4 (Player Buffs)

Information guy continues to be the best. These are some damn good status effects you've got cooking up as well.

is this saitama as a baby xD

Heh, I should make a one-punch mode. Where running into enemies makes them explode.

The Winners of Misaos 2015

Best RPG and Game of the Year? I need to play that game. Once I have time...in like...a year...ugh.
Congrats on the win Housekeeping! As well as all you other wonderful peopel!

Release Something: Gotta Go Fast!!!

Ugh...so many updates...can't keep up...

@BadLuck
You killed me. I'm dead. This game is too beautiful I can't take it. Say something nice for my eulogy. Hard to believe this game is finally coming out. So is there a winner to this "Release Something"? Because I'm pretty sure BadLuck won.

@Craze
Now those are some skills right there. I mean damn. Golemancy? Sign me the hell up!

@Archeia_Nessiah
Man, I don't know if those three things are connected but I'm excited either way! That's some great sprite work of the RPGMaker MV people. Looking awesome as usual.

@Sated
Bitch-Slap? One Inch Punch? Sounds like my kind of game. Always enjoy a good skill tree too.

@Rose_Guardian
Looks like a fun fantasy RPG. Those watches around the player's faces in battle are an eyesore though. It'd be interesting to see what the game looks like in action.

@Ljink
You just got yourself a subscriber sir. That music is awesome! Liking the style of your game too. Awesome-tacular.

@Donut
What the?! What is this? Caterpillar quest? Heh, it's a very interesting project! I see a lot of Legend of Mana resources which is cool, though it really clashes with the other sprites. And that FP dungeon? Kind of a weird graphic shift there. Interesting project though.

@pooperflooper
"I should probably explain some things." I agree! This game looks cool and I'd like to know more!

EDIT:
@Sooz
Whoops! Forgot one! This looks awesome! That diner shot has piqued my interest soundly. What is this project? I crave more...

@Novalux
So, I played this game until I got stuck in a forest. Entering a path kept leading back to the same spot and doesn't seem to be intentional. Overall, I'd say this game's kind of a mess at times. The map forks when there's really one way to go, events repeat themselves again and again for no apparent reason, and battles are a cinch since the strongest skills can be used again and again at no cost. Not sure what else to say, it's just kind of your average RPGmaker game.

@WolfCoder
So it's like...Super Minecraft World I guess. Pretty cool. It's too bad I'm not really a fan of Minecraft but this is definitely interesting. I spent some time collecting stuff then I uh...I got stuck in a lake. (Can I not jump?) Not sure what sets it apart from the other Minecraft clones out there but I wish you luck in making it.

@AubreyTheBard
So...I opened this up then it got mad at me and crashed? Tried again and same result. Not sure why. Sorry...

@LorSquirrel
Okay so, I haven't played this demo all the way, but I really like what I'm seeing so far. The environments are detailed and you're using some of my favorite music resources. I'm definitely going to go and play some more some time but I do have to get up early so I just wanted to let you know it was enjoyable and wow this is becoming quite the run-on sentence.

@Ziegfried_McBacon
Huh. Can't say I was expecting that. I shot apples out of my crossbow out at several raptors and a giant caped amazoness. Then I shot some more raptors until I got stuck on one that doesn't move. I had fun though? Would glitch again.

@Ratty524
So...this is embarrassing. But uh, how do I actually play this? I couldn't actually find the launcher just a bunch of files and music. Do I need to download another program? I feel silly... Sorry Ratty!

@Gourd_Clae
Whoa. I can't tell if this game is cute, funny or creepy as hell. It might not be for me but this is definitely an interesting looking project.

And I think...that's...that's everyone? Shesh. Wow. You guys don't mess around.

Release Something: Gotta Go Fast!!!

@zDS's feedback
Heh, why not all three? Thanks! If I get the mechanics of the game just how I want it I think it could really turn out to be something special.

@Kylaila's feedback
Yeah, the battle layout is a work in progress. Still trying to find a way to cohesively bring it all together. I would like to have a more pixelated faceset for the player's character to use but I'm no artist so I'd have to get someone to do it for me. We'll see what happens.

@kr0x's feedback
Say whhhhaaaaattt? I love the font I chose. Gives it a silly, comic book feel. Pistols at dawn madam. :P But yeah, I like how the game looks as well. Clashes with the content of the game well.

@lrog's feedback
Thanks! Though I am just using the Old School Modern tilepack with some edits here and there. I customized some more policemen and such. But thanks!

@Thunder176's feedback
Yeah, that was something I noticed myself as well and it has mentioned by quite a few people here. The facesets I have now were meant to be placeholders when I threw them together anyway so we'll see what happens. Thanks for the feedback.

@Lucy_Fox's feedback
Thanks! The simple look works well with what I have planned for the project. Hmm. I can see what you're talking about with the menu color. I'll have to see if I can do something about that.

@Zero3D's feedback
Thanks for the kind words! Yup a mouse system. Works pretty well too! Players will be able to play with either it or the keyboard whichever they prefer.

@Liberty's feedback
Yeah, I'm planning on doing something different with the battle system. THe player can either kill, arrest or talk down criminals in battle with more experience and rewards for the latter two. Should be an interesting system if I can get the mechanics how I want them. And what, you've never heard of a special-T made carpet before? <.< >.> Those barristas knew what what they were signing up for when they got the job. Thanks for the feedback!

@Ratty524's feedback
True, the black bar is a bit of of place. I was originally going to have it always be at the top but I feel it should only be there for investigation modes now. And yeah, the resolution from the mouse and menu icons is off but also kind of a side effect of the scripts I'm using. I don't you know of an icon set that features larger 2x2 pixel icons would you? Because I'm kind of stuck using the 1x1 pixel icon sets that are out there since they have the most variety. I can probably find a way to edit the mouse script from Shaz to display larger icons to see how that looks to make it mesh more but chances are this'll be the best I can do unfortunately... And don't even get me started on that font size! It seems to randomly resize itself depending on what I name the object it's hovering over. Very annoying and I can't seem to find a way to fix it. Rabble rabble. Thanks for the feedback Ratty!

@Housekeeping's feedback
Thank for the kind words sir! I can't take credit for the tiles and sprites since they're all from the Old School Modern tilepack and I just make edits here and there to increase their versatility. Though I feel the pack gets a bad rap since I've found it easy enough to make some cool looking maps. Hopefully I can get the mechanics of the game fully fleshed out to compliment the great art style.

@MakioKuta's feedback
Heh. I strive to surprise people's expectations like that. And yeah, when I used the face generator they were always meant to be placeholders while I think of how I want the faces to look. I'll see if I can't find someone to help "art them up" for me since my spritework is the weakest sauce. Anyway, thanks for the kind words!

Release Something: Gotta Go Fast!!!

Feedback time!

@UPRC
The fangame to end all fangames is here. And it's canon. There's going to be a lot of happy FF fans out there.

@Luchino
Custom art! I really like the port town. Really comes together Why do those battler poses look so familiar? Is it just me?

@MakioKuta
It's always easy to tell you've done the artwork. You've got a unique style that's all your own. And it's fantastic-o! Guessing this is either an expansion or sequel of sorts to April was a Fool? Great stuff.

@luiishu535
Kill the Clown? Well yeah, who's gonna miss them? Interesting choice of game you have there.

@mjshi
Oh wow. That takes me back. Always had a soft spot in my heart for the OG RTP. So simple. So clean. Cool little ship you have there.

@lrog
Hexagonal war strategy game. Reminds me of this old boardgame we had growing up. Looks like some complicated stuff you've got going there. Hope it turns out how you want it.

@Addit
Dice game of some kind. Or wait is that monopoly? Are you programming that yourself? Impressive if so I must say.

@KatanaHiroshi
Hmm. Is this a futuristic school setting with a monster? I like the holographic stands all about. The hallways are pretty bare though. Could use some variety to spruce them up. Windows, posters, cracks, etc. Floors too. Interesting project though!

@Lucy_Fox
Good lord that's some pretty backgrounds. Is that for Erayu? I'll have to check that game out sometime. I tend to try to only play games that are complete usually but good lord that is some spritework.

@Housekeeping
Wow. I think that's my favorite music from you yet right there! Good to see you plugging away towards completing JatPM! That blob is all kinds of adorable.

@Zephire98
Well, that's a swordsman alright. Looks like he's ready for some adventuring.

@kr0x
0_0 Those characters are unnerving! I like them. I love the logo for that game you posted too. Very well done. Your stuff is very interesting.

Woo. That's a lot. I'll respond to the feedback left for me later. For now sleep awaits.
