D is for Dungeon Review

Wow. That is one positive review! Thanks for the kind words! Didn't realize you liked the contest version that much. For a game I made in a month, it's really getting some love. Hopefully I can churn something out this summer before school starts again this fall!

[RMVX ACE] Are there any games without those horrid default sprites?

Update: Everyone please use this instead.

Oh wow. Is that the work of the guy that did the Old School Modern pack? It looks similar. if it is then I'm definitely going to look into it once I get home.

Does anyone remember the rules on using outside resources for IGMC? Those would be perfect a smaller game.

The rules last year were you can use them if they're for commercial use or you own them. Is the IGMC coming around soon? Groovy.

Random or On map encounters?

author=Magi
Is it a slider? I've read about some questionable design decisions in Bravely Default regarding its battles, but a literal slider button that you can just adjust to basically nothing seems weird.

"Here you go. We made a game, we'd like you to buy it, but you don't have to play the game if you don't want to."

Lol. I'd say it's more like you can play the random battles on your terms if you want to or not. It's not the best way to handle that I admit but considering the wide range of customizability in the game and the infamous latter "Groundhog Day" segments I felt it was a welcome addition. I was more including the game in the list as a formality than a full endorsement of their technique though. It worked for BD but would feel weird in another game. I enjoy the way Exit Fate did it more. Since money was sparse in that game.

And yeah no real risk/reward for the system turkeyDawg. Just turn off battles or set rate to your liking.

Random or On map encounters?

Man. There are some serious Opinions in this topic.

Personally, I've no issue with random battles so long as they allow the player freedom to disable/avoid if going through older areas/injured/etc. Think Bravely Default, Exit Fate, Earthbound, or games like that. It's up to the developer to make the most of whatever system they use.

A lot of it comes from implementation. Random battles can be done right and create tension and challenge for the player. Or they can be done poorly and just be another auto battle.

Using common events to make life easier

Very interesting and useful information here! Opens up many possibilities.

What would be the best way to display the value of one of these private variables? For instance displaying "John" from your example in a text message box?

Edit: Weird. I copy-pasted the same event twice in a new project and for some reason the two events seem to be sharing the same private variable. I have the event set up exactly as in the example you provided. I was just supposed to copy-paste your example event to expect different results right?

Is it okay to use music from other games?

Using music and sprites from commercial games is generally a bad practice. Audio and graphics are an important part of a game's unique identity and generally tends to be a large part of what we remember from playing them. To me people shouldn't use resources from other games for the same reason aspiring film-makers shouldn't use props like Jason's Mask or script lines from other movies.
As Liberty said, fan-games are the only place I feel would be appropriate for ripped music. Especially since we live in the digital world where artists are literally giving out free music for commercial and non-commercial uses.
Search "royalty free music" on google. Search "material midi" on google.
Stuff's everywhere. Not to mention the stuff they sell in the DLC store and music from any of the other RPG Maker games. These aren't the early years where everybody pirated RPG Maker 2k after all. If you're looking to buy RPG Maker VX Ace at full price and make an original product, it's best to leave such bad habits at the door.

Kickstarter Relaunched!! Funded 10% in 1 day!

Awesome! I just finished the "early access" build and I like what you've added since the last demo I played. The optional marbles reward exploration, the skill building after each main battle lets players choose their own play style and the playhouse, which I feared may have taken away from the experience you were building, stands out as a fun diversion full of familiar characters. Gotta love the little people!
Battles feel more fledged out and balanced now. The game just really FEELS more like an RPG while still maintaining all the emotional impact the original build provided. Very impressed sir. Looking forward to the finished product and may fortune (and gamers) bestow you all the funding you need!

Jimmy and the Pulsating Mass

Holy expletive. The brain behind Rope to the Sky and Heart Pumps Clay channeling his inner Earthbound? I think I've subbed to my sub on this one. Love what I'm seeing so far Housekeeping!

Last Word Steam Release

Hell yeah! This game deserves to be on Steam. Go capitalism! I'm loving the character portraits.
