AFTERMATH VX - Version 0.4 Review

Thank you for playing my game and reviewing it, Amerkevicius.

It appears I have made this game too difficult for some players when I felt it wasn't that bad nor did my testers. It's unfortunate you gave my combat system such a low score but I can see your points that some nerfing of NPC's while in the solo stage is needed to boost up that score. Both max and yourself had difficulties with the starved leapers while you were solo. That's crystal clear now. What I will probably end up doing is removing encounters until you find your group and limit the areas you can walk in while solo until you feel safer that your friends are with you.

Starved Leapers pose no serious threat when you have your entire group there to help but the last thing I want to do is hold the players hand because if you think an overall challenging game is annoying and painful to play, imagine a game that's super easy with no challenge at all. I basically need to hit just in the middle there but leaning more to the difficult side. It would be a large drop in difficulty but not too easy.

About the encounter (boss npc) at the end. Go ahead and message me which part didn't make sense in the story and I'll talk to you about it in private. The end of the Demo was to give a teaser of what's going on not the full story. There were many things left out of it that are planned to be explained later.


EDIT:

Production of 1.0 is not going well. I have been busy with things outside of game design lately. However, if I get back to working on this I will take a lot of advice given by the players and try to improve the game to be more user friendly right out of the box.

I just went back and read drakiyth's posts again. Someone's been taking full advantage of the edit function.

Of course I have. I got a major warning for losing my temper. It was childish of me to care so much what other people think. You're going to have people who love and hate you in this world and you return the same in kind. Though, honestly, I am not the hateful type. This game creation and people's opinions can really strike the nerve sometimes and it's kind of difficult to not fire off on somebody.

I am short tempered there is a major difference.

From reading Max's review, something I'd suggest is just making enemies give more experience. Honestly, this is probably something a lot of games should do. What is the point of making the player fight 70 battles to level up? That's just wasting the player's time.

EDIT: 70 is a hypothetical number I pulled out of thin air please do not argue that it isn't actually 70 in this game

If you make enemies give more experience, the player can progress more easily without you having to adjust much else.

(Yes, I am defending Max from a review backlash and the irony is not lost on me.)

Yeah, I was actually considering your idea on raising exp gains after finding out most people are reaching the rat boss at rank 3. Pretty impressive stuff to reach him at that rank but he will cream a party that low with his 0.3 tweaks. I buffed him for the new version of the game. Whenever I start working hard on chapter 1 I'll go over some of the things that appear bothersome for some players in 0.3 or less.

If you like Aftermath. Good for you. I'm glad I could bust my ass with hours of work to give some enjoyment.

If you didn't like it. Go play something (more exciting) and leave the game to the old schoolers.

Uh. Pretty sure it wasn't a "Who has time for indy games?" so much as a "Keep the player interested."
For example, you can usually tell if a book is going to be good or not by flipping to page 40 and seeing if you're interested. That's not always true, but if you've got a dull opening, no matter how many times you say, "But wait, cause chapter 27 is AWESOME" people aren't gonna make it.

I see your point and the game's got a slow start.

im pretty sure psy wombats meant that the start of the game should be interesting in order to motivate the player to get to the so called interesting bad guy that you promised. you can't go "oh well you didnt see the interesting bad guy because you didn't spend enough time on uninteresting part of the game" it really has nothing to do with dissing the common RM player effort, psy wombats was just mentioning that max prob spent more time than most.
