GamerGate: "Nobody truly cares about women. Everybody's lying. It's all a misandrist attempt to take away my video game rape/woman-beating/big-boob-jiggling! How dare they take these things away from ME!"
Come on. Both sexes are massively sexualized in games. And no, there's not going to be a movement this big and diverse just to keep in-game rape and boob giggling.

At the same time, I think the basis for GG was bullshit to begin with. A woman cheating on her boyfriend is none of our business
I agree that it's no one's business. The side effect is that it made me feel really shitty because I have to rely on the merits of my game design skills rather than my sexual relationships to get good reviews.

I am pretty sure I completely agree with harmonic on these issues.
What the fuck is the world coming to.
This has happened more than a few times in the last few years friend, and you've said the same thing each time. Perhaps it's nothing to be afraid of.

author=Zeigfried_McBaconauthor=slashphoenixMaybe im just really stupid, but I honestly couldn't find anything in Slash's last post that was white, man, or white man hate. Can we please make an extra effort to better understand each other?

I may have (mostly in jest) put too much emphasis on the white male thing.
Most of what I said wasn't directly intended for slashphoenix. I went into the larger picture. I figured that was pretty clear.

author=EdgeOfChaosauthor=slashphoenixYeah, that actually was an unfair post, harmonic. I don't think s/he said anything about you or generalized all white men as evil.

I may have (mostly in jest) put too much emphasis on the white male thing. But don't let that one oversight invalidate everything else. The main point is that it's not just about violent threats. It's a small minority, and threats are going both ways.
The huge emphasis on violent threats is just an attempt to clone the 12-year-old Call of Duty kid who screams epithets and replace all the reasonable people with that kid. It's just obfuscation.

I assure you, the vast, vast majority of us awful white men are not interested in making violent threats. Well... not against women anyway. (Hi WIP!)
There's more to it than the threats, and this is pretty clear. It is in large part a consumer revolt, and a nerd revolt. Consumers tired of being duped by privileged insiders, and nerds who have done no wrong who are tired of being bullied and shamed, just for being white males, or being gamers, or hell, even being totally agreeable to the anti-gamergate cause but not completely and utterly obedient enough. Not to mention, a lot of women and minorities who are tired of being trotted out as social justice fodder and being told what opinion to have.
Speaking of being told what opinion to have, yes, I am a white cismale. And a nerd, and a gamer. And an indie developer. And I absolutely adore women. I love working with them, I love making games for them. So, no, don't tell me that I hate women because I don't condemn Gamergate.
This guy pretty much has my exact opinion down to the finest detail.

The difference being, apparently you are okay with hatred, threats, and bigotry as long as it's directed at GG supporters, while the vast majority of GG supporters are against those things.
Let's be real. I know you aren't okay with any hatred/threats/bigotry, but, to someone who doesn't know you, one has to wonder why all the rotten behavior on the anti-GG side seems to avoid the same scrutiny that the GG side gets for their rotten behavior.

The conclusion one can come to is that indie developers are supposed to just accept that if you have sex with influential game industry media people, you are entitled to the unfair advantage it affords you.
Meanwhile, the indie developer who doesn't use sex as a networking tool but does have big dreams and creativity is supposed to somehow compete against that.
And not accepting this paradigm means they're "just haters." The cure for these haters is to accept and put up with things like:
Threats to career.
Comparisons to terrorists.
Racism.
Cool story. Pardon me while I groom my neckbeard in the mirror I keep in my basement where I live.

Honestly, I'm not sure what SJWs want. Are they proposing demographic-based legislation? Or is it just... "awareness"? It is really a shame that legitimately egalitarian men, most of whom are harmless nerd gamers, are being disenfranchised and shamed for the gender they have.
Cat-calling is not a tit-for-tat thing when it comes to gender harassment. Men are constantly thrown homosexual pejoratives for not being manly enough, or poor pejoratives for not having enough money. To judge is to be human.

But, you really have to ask yourself this question if you want to get at the heart of this whole movement:
Why are a large group of people raging on about it now when the deep level corruption has been apparent and out in the open for years?
This is a very fair question, and honestly, I don't think most gamers were privvy to that sort of thing. People are trusting of systems of authority by default. And people like me, for whom this is both life-long passion and now a profession, finding out about said corruption hits pretty close to home.

I have a pretty big problem with the stereotype of the "typical gamer" being rammed down our throats by some on the anti-gamergame side. I'm slightly paraphrasing here, but they basically said anyone who disagreed with them are overweight, white, straight males who, apparently, don't shave their necks. This is the kind of ad-hominem that doesn't help anyone and just causes continuing division.
The natural response is that overweight white straight males are so badass that they're immune to racism, sexism, and neckbeardism, but this is untrue. All stereotyping is bad. I have seen an enormous diversity - political, racial, gender, national, and more - among gamergate supporters. In fact, the only unifying element seems to be that they love games.
This sort of "typical gamer" stereotype is really annoying, outdated, and mostly being pushed by media sources. It is the continuation of being shamed for being a gamer from our high school days that might have made us nerds or outcasts.
And now they're comparing gamergate supporters to ISIS and threatening aspiring indie developers who support gamergate with exile and ostracism from the gamer community.
