Game Inspirations?

author=iamnot link=topic=862.msg11418#msg11418 date=1207239877
I do my best to be creative and rely on myself for other things (such as story and puzzles), but it is difficult... probably why it is taking so long to get anywhere in my game.

I think it's healthy to accept that genuine creativity is a misunderstood topic. People never just pull new ideas completely out of thin air -- they are always influenced by the things around them. You have preconceived ideas of what art is and how good design functions and you no matter how hard you try you'll never be rid of them. It isn't always obvious to the creator what his influences are or were until years later, but there are always influences. It may be helpful for you to embrace them rather than deny they exist.

Oh man, did anyone play that dual screened space game at the arcade? It had some joysticks and shit and a big warp button.

Not but I love joysticks and buttons so it sounds fun!!

You're too old Kentona, I've never seen an arcade with any of these games (exceptpossibly Pacman). My idea of arcade games is the Capcom massive 2d action games like Knights of the Round, and of course, Street Fighter. There's others, like Virtua Cop too.

Just so you know the average age for self-described "serious" gamers is above 30 years old.

In no particular order except for Time Crisis:

Time Crisis
(this invented the now-ubiquitous cover mechanic in shooters)

Breakout
Tetris
Street Fighter
Dungeons and Dragons
Final Fight
Ms. Pac-Man
(NOT the original Pac-Man)
Donkey Kong
Donkey Kong Jr.
Space Invaders

VX Character generator? Wicked!

I don't know if that sprite is representative of all results but so far it looks way better than the stuff the charas generater would pump out.

While this doesn't appeal to me because I'd rather sprite my own creative designs, I think that it's a really neat tool and I am glad it exists.

Game Inspirations?

Lately my biggest inspiration has been the ballets of Igor Stravinsky. In fact I have considered abandoning work on my game and focusing and writing a ballet instead (no kidding).

Otherwise, I like to look to games that people don't often emulate in the RM scene for featuresets. In Wilfred the Hero I set out to make an RPG with specifically very unusual mechanics (your characters have lives in an RPG wtf???) for example. While it was quite probably a disaster I think that it was at least pretty interesting and the graphics were pretty good too. Right now I am looking at light graphical Roguelikes for inspiration because such a title is not common in the RM scene.

I think that it would be much more productive for our community if we looked for inspiration and ideas in sources different from what we conventionally do. Final Fantasy is great and everything but I think we've beaten that horse to death. If you haven't noticed, even the publisher of Final Fantasy thinks that horse has been beaten to death (take a look at how weird Final Fantasy XII is).

RPG MAKER 2000 - Still Kicking

XP had a good musical score for a good portion of its RTP music (especially compared to 2003's), it just felt too much like a revised 95 with a scripting system.

This doesn't make any sense considering that RPG Maker XP is almost identical to 2003 in every single way sans for operating in a different resolution and adding a scripting system (yes I understand a half dozen or so commands are different). You may have a case for arguing that RPG Maker VX is a step backwards (especially in regards to fucking tilesets GOSH) but I don't don't understand why you feel the way you do about XP.

Working on a strategy RPG? It's too bad you're presumably doing it on one of the Ruby-based RMs, from what I could tell of your screenshot, or I'd love to trade notes with you on the matter. I've been working on a little 2000-based strategy engine that I feel is really making some progress, though I've been doing my own little thing while out of tune with the RPG-making community for so long that I don't know how far anyone's gotten with the strategy-RPG genre in the 2000/2003 field.

Aurora Wing: http://www.rpgmaker.net/games/42/

The game doesn't have much documentation on the site (I think the author doesn't have any interest in supporting the game) but I assure you that it's one of the best RM2003 games out there. It also happens to be a strategy RPG.

I put it together myself? ???

The sprites, portrait works and system sets are my works. The background stuff is pretty much all edits.

But it's still a joke?

I . . . don't get it.

Pregnant Man

I don't give a shit what the hell he does. When i say that i was disgusted by this i meant that it is fucking unnatural. If he wants to remove his breasts, take pills to grow facial hair (can't see how that makes him a man) then he can but it is just going to stuff up his life. Please tell me how many friends he is going to make? People will critisize him in public, work etc. His life is ruined. Is it really worth it?

Oh and i don't think i need to meet those people. I have already met you. That's enough.

Okay but keep in mind that you are a bigot.

I think you are anaware that by being born transgendered, his life was ruined the moment it started. Because of his challenges, he will never have a normal life. Gender reassignment therapy and artificial insemination will make his life as normal as it possibly can be, and I think he is probably happy with that.

Also, you seem really concerned about his friends and what other people think of him. Generally, adults don't care about making new friends or about what other people think about them and rather what they personally value.

Also:

MP3s VS MIDIS.

author=WIP link=topic=726.msg11346#msg11346 date=1207152040
I'm sorry but you are wrong with your summation. Just because they have a similar setup, does not make them related. You even discount your statement with your own words by saying MOD and SPC is like MIDI. They are not MIDI, because MIDI is a standard format/protocol. They are like MIDI in that they contain digital information on how to reproduce sound. The way they store that information is different and does not fall under the scope of the MIDI standard.

But I am talking about MIDI as a broad term and the specific MIDI standard that a .mid file represents. The two things are different.

THE ORIGINAL CLAIM was that the music in Super Nintendo games was vastly different from .mid files, which they are not. A .mid file, a .mod file, and a .spc file are all examples of different MIDI standards as the acrynym MIDI describes a setup where a collection of stored notes is sent to a sequencer or to samples in the memory (which in the case of the .mod are packaged with the file) in order to create music.

Anyway you're probably just going to fight this whether you think you are right or wrong because you're a jerk who backstabs his friends so whatever.
