The first successful commercial GUI product was the Apple Macintosh, which was heavily inspired by PARC's work; Xerox was allowed to buy pre-IPO stock from Apple in exchange for engineer visits and an understanding that Apple would create a GUI product. Much later, in the midst of the Apple v. Microsoft lawsuit in which Apple accused Microsoft of violating its copyright by appropriating the use of the "look and feel" of the Macintosh GUI, Xerox also sued Apple on the same grounds. The lawsuit was dismissed because Xerox had waited too long to file suit, and the statute of limitations had expired.

Not trying to be a pedant about it just this is one of the greatest misconceptions about the history of desktop computing and like most of the chants endlessly repeated by the "fuck M$" bandwagoneers isn't grounded in fact. FTR I'm not the biggest Microsoft fan either but they've made a lot possible for all of us :p

I play with win7 once in a while (especially as it updates) to see how it runs various bits of software, I have to say I was surprised even early on how many newer games it could run without issues, but I play so many older games/use so much old software that for right now, Vista is what I feel safe working with and even that is a pain in the ass sometimes compared to XP :x
