oh Mog you always know how to get a mini-essay out of me
"To my mind it is wholly irresponsible to go into the world incapable of preventing violence, injury, crime, and death. How feeble is the mindset to accept defenselessness. How unnatural. How cheap. How cowardly. How pathetic."
- of all people, Ted Nugent
Disclaimer: knowing how to prevent putting yourself in a dangerous situation is the best self defense and better than winning a fight dawwww let's hug
Actual post:
Yeah I definitely believe self defense is important as heck, not only for knowing how to end a violent confrontation but for also knowing how to compose yourself. Knowing that you could protect yourself if necessary does wonders for how calmly you can handle a sketchy and potentially violent situation, even if you never throw a single punch outside of a friendly spar :p
I don't have any sort of formal martial arts training, just a good chunk of hand-me-down knowledge from my ex-Army Ranger dad and what boxing knowledge I picked up at the Boys and Girls Club. I'm a tall dude so I have a reach advantage over the average Joe but really I'm not a trained or expert fighter, just a regular guy who doesn't hit first but is a huge dickhole when someone else does. In spite of this, I've somehow given way more ass whippings than I have received. And, if I find myself in a situation I can't handle, well, I'm a pretty fast runner and not ashamed to beat feet to save my own ass :p
I guess part of what I'm saying is that if you're put into a situation where you might have to fight and you don't have a lot of experience, don't worry about it because most people walking about these days seem to be pretty inept at it themselves.
I know we're talking more about hand to hand type self defense here, but I'll also add that sometimes when I go out to the city late at night I carry a handgun. Never had to use it, pull it or even think about doing either yet, but Lord does it make a difference in my state of mind in some of these sketchy neighborhoods, ESPECIALLY given the desperation caused by the current economic situation in the US. The decline is VERY visible in most areas here :<

Hey guys, something I was debating/discussing with a friend; how many of you guys know how to fight? Or put more leniently, how many of you have a BASIC GRASP of self defense, or if you're lucky enough to have never been in a fight, do you have any qualities that you think will help you in self defense, regardless or not of any actual martial ability (i.e., being really tall/huge, carrying a knife around, etc etc)?
I was debating that self defense, or at least having a modicum of knowledge of self defense, is important, but my friend says otherwise. I believe such an attitude is too idealistic.

I've done a bit of Aikido, which is cool because it consists mainly of throws designed to not hurt the attacker.I've had Aikido demonstrated on me a few times by a friend and his teacher and frankly it hurt like hell :p unless you meant "designed not to injure the attacker" in which case yeah that part is pretty cool. But man, ouch.
Do you prefer "strong" or "sissy" protagonists?
KAif it's a world that's very similar to the one I live in I want to play a character I can relate to not necessarily one like me but just one that could potentially exist without stretching my imagination to the point of discomfort I guess.
EDIT: On the actual topic, it really depends on the game's environment. In general though, I opt for somewhere in-between.
if it's a world of complete fantasy, or if it's set in some exotic or distant time and place then I'd rather be some crazy lizardman or 8-legged robot or brain-in-a-jar-on-a-skateboard or something
also RE all the anti Gears of War hulking "POWAAAHH ARMMAAHHHHHHHHHHRRGH" style protagonists: that stuff is weak as heck but unfortunately it's a middle schooler's wet dream so, just like SLADE MCBLACKDARK type angry black wearing gun toting totally and needlessly hard and brooding antihero character types, it's here to stay in games! The best we can do is to keep it out of our own :p

Games and Why You Play Them
RM is to videogame designers what Comic Sans is to graphic designers.
except for the fact that Comic Sans is pretty universally hated and blacklisted among graphic designers, whereas the game designers who seem to hate RM the most are the ones who use RM.
