Please, Stop Writing Happy Endings

Wow, PB, that was an amazing read! Seriously, it brought a ton to the table that I hadn't even thought about!

Please, Stop Writing Happy Endings

The perfect game: "Thank you, Mario. But the Heat Death of the Universe is in another castle."

Please, Stop Writing Happy Endings

No, it was me who deserved it. But it hit Jo instead and also started a sequel to Donnie Darko.

Please, Stop Writing Happy Endings

I like the idea of more diversity and thinking about where you're going in your stories. However, I find the idea that anyone ever was meant to take fiction as some sort of guidebook as extremely off-putting, and the idea that authors shouldn't have happy endings because they're encouraging people to view the real world falsely or anything sounds nonsensical to me.

I had a shit childhood. But I was never under any assumption growing up that I was going to eventually get something better because stories or anything else told me that "I deserved a happy ending." No, even as a child, I understood that stories and real life were very different. And rather than these stories with happy endings getting my hopes up, they instead helped me cope. That's right, these people writing these so-called deceitful "Happy Endings" helped me endure tragedy. They fostered creativity, and allowed me a safe space to imagine and play even while things continued to suck around me.

Not every story needs a happy ending. But if no stories had happy endings, I feel I would be so much poorer for it, and I'm certain that I'm not alone in that assumption.

RMN JUNE-JULY 2015 PODCAST

Haha, very nice! I liked "I'm not asking everyone to become unity" near the end XDXD

And yeah, my article's mainly about not expecting the RMN community to do the heavy lifting and all the hard work if you haven't ever made a game before. People who do team games for contests or for other reasons are exempt. ^_^

That's complete rubbish. Your opinions are currency where I live.

Now unity, I mainly asked you since you supported the idea and encouraged me. You're also one for the people and social interactions (even if you can be really shy yourself ;)), so I believe that mix is perfect for going over this kind of article.

I don't think a stamp is necessary, either, but it is a lot of fun! :) And makes for a nice starting picture.

The next two are already written in drafts, and I hope I can make it a little bit easier for people to express themselves.

Okay, maybe I'm being a bit down on myself. I just don't want people to think that I'm being conceited or anything when things get stamped "unity approved." Sorry, I'm probably overthinking this way too much >.<;

While I'm happy to preview articles and give advice, the more I think about it I'm not sure a "unity approved" stamp is really necessary, as my opinions aren't necessarily better than anyone else's, and I don't want to seem like some big expert on stuff when there's still so much from both life and game-making that I've yet to learn ^_^;

Think Before You Remake

Great article! :D

I personally don't really get the reason so many people want to remake their old games. Especially if there aren't a lot of people clamoring for a remake.

I see the old stuff I've done, but rather than wanting to literally remake it, I'd rather do something more akin to a spiritual sequel: find the stuff that made that first game fun, and distill it, and then make a new setting around it, and presto! You have a new game that retains a bit of that spark that (hopefully) made your original game fun! That idea is a lot more appealing to me than a remake.
