Let's Write... Fanfiction!

It’s a RPG Maker fanfic! And a love story! Yay!

This is a fanfic of the super fun RPG Maker date sim “Heartache 101 ~Sour into Sweet~” by flowerthief, which you can find on RMN here!

This story came to be as a result of RMN’s 2016 Secret Santa event. It’s my gift to Zakariya. Writing this took a lot longer than I expected so it didn’t get published till now. Plus it’s Valentine’s Day so I thought it would be nice to publish a love story now.

This is a young adult sweet romance with a Teen rating (so no explicit rowdy scenes folks :p) . As it’s somewhat long (~21000 words), I couldn’t post it directly here. Instead, to read the story please follow THIS LINK.

Hope you find some enjoyment from this story and Happy Valentines!

Heartache 101 ~Sour into Sweet~

What do you like or dislike about RM Horror games?

@QZProductions
I guess I stopped just before scare. Didn't know I was so close, should go on then. I think your game has the potential to be long because of the freedom of exploration you give players. When I first played I talked to like every single person, and that took quite a while. For game length I used to think longer is better too, cause aren't players getting more bang for their buck? But then I read this critic saying how movies like The Hobbit(s) or Mockingjay(s) could be better if they'd condensed it into just one. Tighter storytelling. Just food for thought.

@Archeia_Nessiah
Those are great links! Thanks!

I read some article by the Broken Sword guy talking about adventure games in general. He had a great tip that I think applies to horror too. He said you should change the environment based on the player interaction. It's a subtle thing that I tend to forget. Like I would create a room and once its puzzle is done I would just go on to the next room. Combine this with the backtracking talked about in the RE article, it helps me rethink my haunted house.

Hey now, in my game you're stuck in a high school ;DDDD And there's like one real chase scene that lasts like 3 seconds haha

It's interesting to note I never got to the horror part of your game. Yet.

See, I think I was an hour in, and except for a strange girl showing up, it's still mostly sweet date sim mode. Which is fine, but I thought I was gonna play a horror game based on the marketing info. Then I read a review that said the game takes about 20 hours to complete, and that daunted me. I'm not sure when the horror will begin. Do I need to play 10 hours of date sim before I get to the horror?

I understand your game is a hybrid but I think it brings up the question of pacing in a horror game. How much background building is needed? How much setup to make the player care about the characters before the first scare?

What do you like or dislike about RM Horror games?

Quicktime events. I'm of the opinion it can be good, if that is what the audience is looking for. But it does run the risk of ruining your game entirely for some.

I say this based on insight I gained from feedback on my game Blacksword Chronicles for IGMC back then. Long story short, the game is centered around a combat system with timed key presses and nearly half the players could not finish playing because it got too hard. Even though many loved the system, from a development perspective, it was a failure as it prevented a good number of players from finishing the game.

This is because most of the RPG audience expects to use wits and strategy to solve problems instead of reflexes like in fps or other action games. Adding action is unexpected, and sometimes unwelcomed.

Still, horror games I think is a unique hybrid that requires both action and strategy. So I think cleverly designed qte's without frustrating the player could and should be used to tell the story.

So I changed the topic name so now we can all legitimately dump the hate on RM Horror games too. Yay!

But seriously, stating what one hates about a game helps too. It tells devs what to avoid.

What do you like or dislike about RM Horror games?

Thanks for all the advice so far!

A big handicap for RM is that it's mostly 2D pixel graphics. Some of the games mentioned here, or AAA titles such as the Silent Hills, REs, Dead Space, Amnesia, etc. have simply awesome 3D graphics that help with the immersion. I remember playing Amnesia and seriously NOTHING HAPPENED but I was scared out of my wits just walking down absolutely EMPTY HALLS. It's kinda silly when you think about it. I think a big scare factor for these 3D environment games is always the question: What's lurking behind me? I always wonder about the parts I can't see. Wonder if when I turn around I will see something horrifying.

Now for RM games. For example the classic IB. I wasn't scared at all. It was even quite funny at times, but I found it fun to play because of the way the story is setup. Will definitely take a look at the RM games mentioned here.

What do you like or dislike about RM Horror games?

So I'm working on a horror game but am writer blocked. So I was wondering what you guys like about the RM horror games such as IB, Corpse Party, or Pocket Mirror? It'll give me some inspiration on how next to proceed.

Are you looking for a scare? Just like the puzzles? Or maybe you just like the story?
