On a cold, dreary winter night...
In 2009, YDS gave us RMN Christmas Card, a short game in which you explore the town of RMN during christmas, and talk to the members of the community who are the NPCs in the game. It was followed a year later by RMN Midsummer Dreams. There was a third game planned, but it never ended up materializing.
In 2017, I made a fanmade sequel to RMN Christmas Card to bring a game I love to a new era of community members. Many of you joined.
Earlier this year, I announced RMN Christmas Card: New Decade Edition. I'm happy to say that RMN Christmas Card: New Decade Edition (Now simply called RMN Christmas Card 2020) is still happening, and is now an official RMN event!
To anyone that joined RMN Christmas Card New Decade earlier this year, please join again as I have lost the submissions. It can be the same thing as what you submitted for that. I apologize for the inconvinience.
What is it, exactly?
If you have played any of the RMN Holiday games, you can probably skip this section. If you haven't, while I do recommend giving them a go as they are very fun, I understand that not everyone has the time, so I'll summarize for you:
In RMN Christmas Card, members can submit dialogue here and be placed into the game as NPCs. Joining in is very easy, as unlike most other events, you are not the one making the game, you're just saying how you want to appear in it. Development is being taken care of by yours truly!
There are other contributions you can make this time around, so keep reading if you're interested!
How can I join in?*
Now that we have an official event page, to join in you can make an official submssion! There are a few different ways in which you can contribute to the project;
Appear as an NPC - If you decide to join in, this is the only contribution that is obligatory.
To appear as an NPC in the game, please submit a notepad file to the event page that contains what you want to say. The name used in the game will be your username on RMN to avoid confusion.
You can also request a small sidequest or any other specific details, but please keep in mind there is a chance they might not make it into the game.
It's not necessary to make your own sprite, but please do specify any details you find important (skin color, gender or preferred appearance for non-binary members, etc...) otherwise I will probably pick something at random. If you do wish to make your own sprite, you may do so as long as it is in the style of REFMAP for rpg maker 2003. You can see an example spritesheet here. I will be using the same sprite from the 2017 game for members that joined that event, unless otherwise requested.
Mirak also made this blank character template for anyone interested in making their own character!
Appear in the art room - In a new feature to Christmas Card 2020, if we get enough submissions we will have an art room where you will be able to look at art drawn by members! Festive art is preferred, but as long as it's RMN related anything is welcome. No NSFW art please.
If you wish to submit a piece for the art room, please upload the image as a submission, seperately to the notepad file. Keep in mind that as the game is being made in rpg maker 2003 your image will be indexed to a 256 color palette. Do not worry about the size of your image, as I will likely implement a function to both view the image at once and zoom in on it.
Appear in the music room - Same thing as the art room; if we get enough submissions I will add in a room where you can listen to music composed by members, or possibly add in an item that lets you play the music wherever you want.
If you wish to submit a piece for the music room, please upload the audio file as a submission, seperately to the notepad file. Keep in mind that as the game is being made in rpg maker 2003 the only accepted file types are MP3, WAV and MIDI.
What should I say?*
Anything! Funny submissions are well encouraged, the sillier the better. If you'd rather just wish people a merry christmas, that's alright too. There is no limit to what you can say as long as it is within reason. For example, no, you can not submit the entire bee movie script. Profanity is allowed, but try not to go overboard. You can also say something for specific members (optional, of course). The only limit is your imagination.
An example submission:
I would like to say "I was working on an evil plan to take over RMN. Then Liberty found out and kicked me in the face. Impressive, but very painful."
Give me a white male sprite, please.
Remember to submit as a notepad file and not as a comment!
When do submissions close?*
Submissions will close on the 7th of December. Please make sure to submit before then as the game is meant to be released around christmas time!
I would appreciate if users could submit as soon as possible if they are planning to join (at least their dialogue, the art and music can wait) as it's hard for me to make progress on the game without knowing everyone's dialogue.
What's new in this game?
If you are simply interested in joining in, you do not need to read this part. This is simply a segment for people who are interested in learning a few more details on the game itself.
RMN Christmas Card 2020 is both a remake AND a sequel at the same time. Years after the events of the first game, RMN is now a bustling metropolitan city and naturally, everyone has new things to say. But with a timeless new threat resurfacing once again, it seems only fair that time itself plays into it. In RMN Christmas Card 2020, you can travel back into time through portals to RMN Christmas Card 2017! Everything from the 2017 game will also be available in the new game, but improved!
Mapping has seen a huge upgrade from the original, and the dialogue has also been touched up to be much nicer. I did not touch any member submitted dialogue, but the main narrative is now much more well written. Some unfunny jokes have been replaced with better ones and the infamous villain will have more of a presence than 10 seconds of screentime. There is also a lot more polish to both the gameplay and the cutscenes. Overall, RMN Christmas Card 2020 is not only supposed to work as a new game, but a replacement for the 2017 game that's improved in pretty much every way.
Here's an early look into the game, showing RMN in the present day on the left and in 2017 on the right.
Happy holidays, RMN!
