Description

You have traveled back in time to the 90s! You look around your room and see a massive collection of games. Mario, Zelda, Mega Man, Castlevania, Metroid, Sonic, Street Fighter, and more, all waiting to be played. You can listen to your older brother playing Doom in the other room and The Simpsons on the family TV. You see posters of the Ninja Turtles and Transformers, along with countless toys of all kinds. You can even sense the smell of pizza coming from the kitchen! So many great memories are coming back to you!

You go and turn on your computer and see something different. Not only is your computer more advanced than it ever was before. (Heck, you don't even remember having a computer all for you, you always shared the family computer) It now has a brand new program pre-installed: RPG Maker. "Awesome!" you think, "I can make one of those cool Final Fantasy games!". You proceed to spend hours planning how to make your dream game; thinking of sharing it with all your friends at school until you realize something... You only have a single floppy disk to put the game on.

Well, not everything was better in the past.

-----

The 1.44 Floppy disk event is a way to celebrate the now-obsolete data storage medium and also a way to go back in time and appreciate how valuable space back then; where every single byte was valuable and games were optimized to make the most of each one (Unlike modern games were 50+ GB games has kind of become the norm).

The idea is simple: Make a game that can fit into one floppy disk. While there were lots of different kinds of disks with varying capacities back then, the most standard and well-known was the 1.44 MB one. You are free to do whatever you want as long as it can fit into those 1.44 MB. You are not restricted to the technology of the era either. Any modern game engine is fair game, as long as the compressed game still fits into 1.44 MB.

RULES:
-----

- Teams are allowed.

- You may use any engine.

- You can use any resources you've made in the past. This includes making resources before the event officially starts.

- The games must be uploaded to the event page.

- There must be at least 10 minutes of gameplay.

- The game size can't be larger than 1.44 MB. (After compression of course)

- RTP is allowed but the game should run without it installed. If you need help here are some tutorials for RPG Maker 2003

- The game should be able to run out of the box with minimal fussing. This ideally means that it should run by just clicking the .exe file. But if the game requires some extra files then those same files should go within the 1.44 MB limit.

- The event begins on Wednesday the 14th of April and ends at 4:00 am Thursday the 29th of April. (14.4 days. Get it?)

- RPG Maker VX / Ace, MV, and MZ are not available for this event. Their projects even stripped down to the bare minimum don't give enough room to fit into 1.44 MB. You can still use them if you somehow manage to make the game fit though. Good luck!

- Any questions? You can send a PM to "El_WaKa" on RMN or "WaKa" in the Discord server.

REWARDS:

@Soulrain: Cute game! Some passages are more stressful and I liked them, the skyscrapers stage especially. I know that we can change the controls in the emulator but I think that it would feel more natural to jump with A and run with B. I also ran into one funny bug where an arrow stopped moving and remained in midair. Good job on the stages' themes, art and music!

@kory_toombs: A charming, feel-good game. I was wondering where the plot was going but then the ending answered the question :) I played in my browser and didn't run into any bugs. Well done!

Sorry about that. I'm at the mercy of the game's engine here, seeing as this was made in GB Studio... In other words, it can't be fixed

But either way, I'm glad you enjoyed the game.
oh man, I totally missed this.

And wow! I thought I was the only one going to the library with stacks of floppy disks to get games off the internet. Lolololol. DOS games, FTW!

I also found a pawnshop that sold PC game disks.

Good luck, y'all. I might have to play more than a few of these.
Eurgh, been soo busy with school. So far I have a tile map working and the map scrolls etc to the un-animated player.

Probably going to have to change idea or drop out. I remember the good old days where I had time for game making :(

I'm about two days behind schedule since it was a busy week. Time to catch up.
Submitted my entry.

Note for those who want to give it try: just download it and open the index.html with a modern browser. It will look totally in any version of Internet Explorer and in any-but-the-latest Microsoft Edge.

Chrome and Firefox should work on any operating system unless they're way too old for comfort.

Time for some news:

I'm creating a minimalistic dungeon crawler.

You will use your favorite web browser to play it. Swipe the bottom screen of the Nintendo DS to move in the dungeon. You will find chests and battle enemies!

I don't have a lot of things left to do: I only need to program a Game Over and the most basic version of Fflo's Quest will be finished. I'll keep improving it until the end of the deadline.
Project size: merely 400 Kb (220 Kb for the DS image)
I demand a rematch from this event

So I got sick (nothing too serious, but it prevents me from focusing or concentrating).
I was around half-way finished with the game, I'm not even sure I would be able to finish it by the deadline, but now I'm almost certain I can't!

I'll try to upload whatever I made so far, and then I'll finish the game once I'm feeling better, since I think the idea has potential.
I wound up being kind of overwhelmed over the past week or so, and zero inspiration struck in ANY form, especially for something so teeny. x_x

I got nothing. Gratz to everyone else's really creative looking stuff, though. :)
... :? In here Simpson was tv at 2000... And me only play that Civilization...

I went for the obvious picks for "mid 90s things", not thinking of a very specific year (Besides being before 95 when CDs slowly started to become more mainstream). It wasn't about being accurate, it was just about creating some fake nostalgia.

This was cute! Controls are a little jank and the platforming is a bit slippery. There are a few really cheap deaths. Otherwise, it was a really cute Mario clone!

Did you know that Pacman had an actual enemy AI? One ghost always approached Pacman. One ghost always moved away. The third approached the one moving away. The fourth always approached the one moving towards. This is why they could constantly catch you in pinschers. This is a decent little discount Pacman, but now you know how to make it harder.

It was a fun little story. It would have been nice if I didn't have to click on the entry rank after every single command.

As of yet, the simplest game. I always like maze dungeons. Most battles are a bit one the unbeatable side. I really like these kinds of games and I'm really wishing there was more to this one.

Who did Pacman better? Avee. Definitely Avee. It isn't just Pacman, again. This is a really neat little maze runner that keeps getting harder as you go and its enemy AI can be legit frustrating at times. Ultros's tentacles don't specifically come after you but they hover around the coins and can be really obnoxious to avoid. This is a fantastic little game.

So far, this one's my favorite. It's not hard by any stretch of the imagination, but it's so relaxing.

This is so cool! I wish you had time for more!
I've uploaded my submission, it's too small for a game page. Should only take you a few minutes to beat so it falls short of what I had planned, but I had fun anyways.
@pianotm
The Dragon Quest 1-like feeling is definitely there but with more depth and more enjoyment. Good job on making all of the original assets and a lengthy game! I didn't have the courage to go through New Game + though.
There are a few bugs: The Wing sometimes warps me to weird places, including in the middle of impassable mountains. The Coffee I found in a pot was a Thermaturge Manual, the Fireball spell is always grayed out and can never be used. The teleport from the exit of the Minotaur Cave to inside of it is wrong if I remember correctly.

@Garage
Nicely done! To me, this feels like it could be an official Pac-Man game, since you put a lot of care into making many things and details similar to the original. The Scream face was a good choice and made me chuckle :)

@Fflo
It seems a little hard to register my mouse swipes on PC but aside from that I think that this gameplay system can be a good base to create a full-fledged game.

@WolfCoder
A cute demo that also has potential if you make a bigger game out of it. The enemies' movements reminded me of Lufia 2, so it might be a nice addition to get a preemptive turn on the enemy by running into their side or back.

@Frogge
A chill and lovely experience! Everything in the game seems to be designed around the idea of relaxation and positive thinking, such as the color choices and lullaby-like music. Only the second gear puzzle had me become a little more tense in order to think of how to solve it. Nice game!

Hmm...I knew I'd miss at least one coffee, but why can't I get Fireball to work? I have no idea why the wing is messing up. Minotaur Cave will be easy to sort. I'll get on it tomorrow.
