You play the role of an unfortunate knight, Sir Edwin Pebbleton of Dungbottom, who desires one thing in life-to wed a fair maiden and restore his family name that his late father tarnished. Yet, Sir Edwin isn't the most prestigious knight in the land. He's poor, daft and quite unattractive. Finding a maiden to marry has proven to be a difficult task for him.

After a drunken night at the Crossroads Inn, Sir Edwin meets a guileful rogue that convinces him to embark on the adventure of a lifetime-to defeat the dreaded dragon Cinder and rescue Lord Thakk's fair daughter, Lady Isella. Finding Cinder, however, is not an easy task, and they are forced to recruit the aid of two others, locate Cinder's lair and pray they don't die in the process.

Take on the role of a comical and dimwitted band of heroes trying to survive in a world full of monsters, peril and roasted pheasant (it's quite nice). Can you rescue Lady Isella? Will Sir Edwin find the love of his life? And will the rogue, Kitrashusara, discover riches beyond his wildest dreams? Only you can determine their outcome.

Single ladies please apply! Do not fret by this young knight's ghastly appearance, his destitute coffer and his dying lands. What he lacks in knightly luxuries, he makes up for in honor and devotion. Sir Edwin enjoys long walks through the meadow and loathes bats.

Don't let this rogue's bright, crimson hair and black eye patch fool you; this kaeta is one to be trusted. He may have a bounty on his head in Yurl and Deshi Ratik, but Ostragen is a different land with new opportunities (and laws). Known as Kit by his close friends, this innocent rogue hopes to obtain mountains of treasure so that he may retire, settle down and live a quiet life deep in the forest as far away from the king and city guard as possible.

Prestorius University is very fortunate to have Fizrahn as part of their magical alumni. He's been valedictorian of his class and studied under the great Ghalahara the Powerful. What he has in studious intellect, he lacks in common sense, though. Note to self: when surrounded by knights clad in metal while standing in a shallow pool of water... don't cast lightning...

A cleric from The Divine Order. She's been sent on a pilgrimage by The Thesiriun in hopes to aid the innocent, smite the wicked and discover herself. She's kind, caring and possesses one mean healing spell, and she doesn't take blaspheming ogres lightly. SMITE ALL INFIDELS!

  • Decisions that will impact the story and future choices; shaping and molding the world around you.

  • No Random Encounters. All battles are scripted into the game to encourage exploration.

  • A story driven game with plenty of dialogue and character development (a lot of action and adventure too :)

  • Comical and satirical moments intermixed with some serious and meaningful outcomes.

  • Herb Gathering, Alchemy, Mining, Treasure Hunting, Fishing and Bunny Hunting!

  • Light humor and sarcasm that brings a "A Bard's Tale" type charm to the game (at least that's what I was trying to do)

This is my first game created in RPG Maker. It was originally done in VX Ace and just recently converted to MV. When I created this game, I wanted to focus on what I enjoy the most-writing and storytelling. I spent a lot of time developing my character's and telling a tale that was reminiscent of old comical fairy tale's from the 80's and 90's. I knew I wanted to go humorous, but not over-the-top, so I got some inspiration from A Bard's Tale and Princess Bride. I took a world full of normal, serious people and injected it with a dimwitted group of heroes to interact with them.

Along with my storytelling and character development, I wanted to create a game where choices matter. The decisions you make in the game will impact the world around you, and those choices will determine the difficulty of a dungeon or boss, or possibly how people, or even a town, interact with your party.

I really hope you enjoy my game if you take the time to play. I didn't have a lot of plugin/coding knowledge, and I'm not artistic, so much of the artwork I used is thanks to content creators across many forums and websites, so much of my game may look very familiar to many of you. I hope my story and characters make up for my lack of artistic creativity and coding knowledge. However; I would like to thank the content creators and those responsible for many of the plugin's I used. This game wouldn't have been possible without every single one of you. :-) Thanks!

Tales of Yuria: Mausoleum of the Gods *RELEASED*

The follow-up story for The Dragon God is now finished. You can download and play it here: ToY: Mausoleum of the Gods.

This is a short story (roughly around 4-6 hours) and just a follow-up to The Dragon God. Think DLC. This story follows where the first game ended and takes you back to The Crypt of Ancients. If you play, hope you enjoy :-)

Thank you very much for being so open to the feedback! ^_^ I'll definitely keep playing and see where things go from here!

EDIT:

Oh I'm dumb XD I missed the healing items in this room until just now:

That will make the remaining battles much more manageable.
@Unity -- Thank you SO MUCH for your feedback. The areas you mentioned are a common complaint in my game. The good news... everything you've said I do plan on fixing in my next installment to the series and future projects:

-There will be dash in all future projects of mine :-)
-Saving will be done in the menu now and can be done at anytime
-Every character will have a healing ability
-Herb gathering and alchemy will be in my next game, but it'll be implemented as additional healing and you won't have to depend on it as much
-I should have updated the tower, but that was actually the first scene I mapped out when I started this game, and I was horrible at mapping. Not sure why I didn't go back and fix after I got better though...... LOL
-My opening... yes, I know. I love writing, and I had a story to tell... but I tried telling TOO much. The intro is definitely WAY too long. I will be breaking that up a LOT in my next game, plus instead of giving so much story, I'm going to make a lot of it optional lore you can read, or learn as you play opposed to it all happening at once. I did add the nice skip intro feature in the event you sat through it once and need to start over, though. So hopefully that helps for anyone that has to start over :-) My next game will not have such a lengthy intro... and gameplay/combat will be injected more throughout.

So... a few things to look forward to if you decide to play again or continue:

-You will be able to heal at the inn after the first dungeon.
-You will get more healing items the further you get plus a character that heals.
-While dash isn't enabled... you will get shortcuts back to the inn on many of the maps.
-The Crossroads & Inn really open up after the first dungeon. Several have said that's when they started to really enjoy the game. My problem... I need to grab your attention at the beginning, so it's something I'll be working on in Part 2 :-)

I will also be putting up a page here for Tales of Yuria 2 before I release the game, that way I can post screenshots, blogs and updates. I'll also be putting out a demo AND getting testers for feedback so I put out a solid game next time around.

Thank you so much for all the feedback. I really appreciate it and look forward to more if you continue :-D

Hello again! ^_^ I've been playing for a little bit and have gotten to the end of the first dungeon! I failed to beat it on my first try because I ran out of healing items. I guess it's back to the forests to hopefully find any that I missed the first time, but I figured now was as good a time as any to give you my first impressions. I have pictures for some of my comments but I'll put them under hide-tags so I don't take up too much space XD

This is the first thing that shows up when I start the game. The dark grey text makes it hard to read in contrast with all the other text in the game. You may want to use a lighter color for the text or just white.

The opening is long. Like, almost half an hour long, by the time I actually could use the menu. I feel like the storyteller's banter goes on a little too much and could use some cutting down. And in the middle of it, I get control of the character, only to not be able to open the menu.

I go forward, and think "Oh neat, bandits! Now I'll get to play the game and fight them, right?" Only to have the screen fade to black and I get beat up by bandits in a cutscene. Then I have to heal, and the cutscenes continue. There's definitely some good parts here, with the humorous happenings, but it all drags on much too long.

The mapping on this tower is very very simple, so much that it really stands out, in a bad way. Just adding some details, like making the surface of the tower to give it some depth, would really help a lot. Here's a mockup I made to show what I mean:

Just adding some tiles to give the tower some depth and adding more details would make the tower look much better. I know it's just for a one-off joke but it still sticks out like a sore thumb.

Speaking of jarring, I know you were going for a thing with the Beauty and the Beast princess, but it feels really jarring to go from stock RPG Maker music to Disney music.

Then after the tavern scene, we finally get control again and can use the menu. I know it's been brought up, but the lack of dashing really hurts the game's playability. It was common in old RPGs to have the player move slow, but so many games have implemented a Dash feature since that time that it feels odd and frustrating to not have one in this day and age. (You can even select Auto-Dash in this game's menu but it does nothing).

Another thing that is baffling is starting in an Inn and not being able to rest in that Inn. I have never seen an RPG give you an Inn and not let you rest there. Or at the very least, refill your HP when you talk to the innkeeper and save your game.

Having the player scrounge for items in the wilderness is nice, but without an inn and with no characters with healing skills, it means all my healing has to come from these items, and if I use them poorly, the game could become unwinnable. Just having the inn heal you could fix a lot of this.

The lower-tier healing items already seem to heal poorly and it's already the start of the game, so I imagine they'll be even less useful as the adventure continues. (You can find better healing items in the ruins but I still wish the ones in the wilderness healed a little bit more).

There's a lot of good stuff in the first dungeon, with a lot of really nice worldbuilding with shrines to the different deities, the clues to the exploding puzzlebox spread around (it felt good to solve it!), the wanted man to fight and other fallen adventurers. The first dungeon is pretty nice overall! ^_^

These magic circles didn't do anything when I interacted with them but I'm guessing that'll be something I can do later?

That brings me to where I stopped. Got through the dungeon and ran out of healing items for the waves of the undead and the boss. Overall, the game seems to have a lot of promise, but the slow start, slow walking speed and a few of the issues with it are holding it back. For your first attempt, this is very good! It just needs some polish.

I'm playing on my laptop with 8 gigs of ram and only the game running but after beating the crypt lord as soon as I left the tower area and headed into the woods my game also instantly shut down. Good thing I did a recent save.

Funny thing I noticed was that on the way to larburg? (forgot the name), there was a crack in the wall which led you to fight bandits. After the last bandit fight, tia says something even though I haven't met her yet. (I thought fizrahn turned into a girl)

LOL Yep, you're correct. Tia does talk there, and you haven't even found her yet. Woops. I'll fix that.

I sent you a PM regarding the crashing with a link to another version of my game I'm testing. Hope that helps. If it does... I'll post, yet, another version of my game :-) I want to test it first tho.

I played quite a bit today, and when I test it... it doesn't crash on me. So I'm not quite sure what's causing it. I know it's an issue because several people have reported it, though. *fingers crossed on my test version* So far I have 3 people with the test version.

If you're playing and experiencing the same issue, send me a PM. I'll send you the link to try that version out too.

Congrats on becoming a Hidden Gem!

... Uh... Is the dragon, Cynder, or Cinder? It's the former, on the main page?

Thanks Malandy! Cynder and Cinder are the same dragon. Just different spellings. :-)

It certainly sounds like it might be the RAM issue. MV tends to run a lot of RAM in and of itself, but if you don't have a fair amount of RAM and you've got other stuff open it can just slam itself down like that. It's what happened to me that time after the Baron/Lord/Family boss. I would recommend following the red text that AeroFunk mentioned a few posts ago and also save often, close down the game after a certain amount of time and reopening. It's a hassle but the longer you play, the more RAM gets built up and the worse it'll get, especially in a long game like this where you'll play for hours.

@Liberty: thanks for that, will give it a try soon
@AeroFunk80: the game has shut itself down twice now, I don't understand why. I am not in the middle of the battle and I only open 1 browser with 1 tab. No error message, no nothing, just closes itself down :(
Hope you can have a fix soon, thank you :)

I apologize. That one I haven't heard of. So the game just shuts down with no error message? I'm not an expert when it comes to the technical side of things, but do you know how much RAM you have? Not saying that's the issue. I'm curious if this has happened to anyone else, though...

So... what have I learned from posting my first game? :-)

1) While I tested it many times, I have so many different options and side quests in my game, I missed a few bugs (sad face). So apparently it needed more thorough testing before posting. Sorry about that. Going forward, I will be recruiting volunteer testers to be more thorough and avoid this from happening on future projects and uploads.

2) I actually took all those animations out (or thought I did) but missed the mage at The Crossroads. I'll actually do what you suggested in the event I have another NPC hidden somewhere with the same issue.

Thanks again everyone for the patience and reporting these issues. I'll correct via Liberty's suggestion above and post another update. I'll have that up tonight!
From the sounds of it you don't have the RTP installed. You need the VX Ace files here, and then follow the installation instructions.

@AeroFunk: I meant to mention that it would be nice to have some way to heal aside from items before you unlock the inn. Maybe they could camp outside at that campfire? Start the game with some Salmon or something so you can heal there? At that point I had maybe two healing items left and was sweating about how I'd be able to heal after I used those. Even if items respawn, if they don't do it until after the dungeon then if you're having trouble getting through it you'll easily run out of heals.
I gave Sun Sphere to the guy in front of the inn but I keep getting this pop up box and it stuck "Loading Error. Failed to load: img/characters/Behavior2.png"
Help please!

I'm only a little ways in, but so far it's a pretty fun game. You did a good job on most of the cutscenes, making good use of music, sound effects, and animations. The dialogue is also funny and engaging.

I wish there was an option to skip the storytelling part though. I used up all my flowers thinking they would grow back and I could pick some more. Now I'm out of healing items except 2 health tonics, and... you can't even rest at the inn! I can't beat the mummy, so I think I need to start again. My fault for not making another save file I guess.

So glad to hear you're enjoying the game so far! :-) Sorry about the long intro. I was trying to tell TOO MUCH of the story when I first made my game, and I learned that I need to spread the intro out with some game play and save options in between. I'm doing this now in all of my upcoming projects. More playing during the intro and saving so you don't have to go back through it again if have to start over or play again.

As for the inn... you will be able to rest there after you get through The Crypt of Ancients. You'll have a room upstairs that you and your party can rest at as much as you like. More herbs will spawn around the inn/forest after you complete each dungeon... plus they'll be in the new maps. You'll also gain access to a vendor soon :-) Once you beat the first dungeon... The Crossroad will open up quite a bit.

OK...

1st-I'm sorry to keep posting and possibly blowing up everyone's notifications.

2nd-I'm SO sorry for the issues with my game. This is the first one I've published, so apparently I wasn't ready to upload my game just yet. :-) However; I believe I figured it out. My game used quite a bit of plugins, and because I'm a big dumb stupid head... I forgot to update my plugins with the most recent version of RPG Maker MV. Many of them were outdated and likely causing the crashes.

Not only did I update ALL plugins to their current version... I tested both versions. The verdict for the old version... I used Resource Monitor and it did eat up a lot of RAM. It used quite a bit and had relatively large Hard Faults/sec spikes. It sat around 2-20 Free MB of memory. However; when I tested the NEW version with the updated plugins... it used less memory, had less Hard Faults/sec and sat around 800-1000 MB of free memory.

I am hoping AND praying this was my issue. I really want everyone to play and enjoy my game. I, again, apologize for not thinking about this before. I was excited to upload my game and never even thought about testing my game while monitoring Resource Monitor for the amount of memory it was using. Now I know to do this for future projects :-)

I hope if you experienced this issue, and that's why you stopped playing, you consider trying again. If you already started... I'm not sure if you can transfer your current saved files to the new version (v1.3) once you download... or if you'll have to start over. Hopefully you can pick up where you left off once you download the new version and transfer your save files over.

USING RESOURCE MONITOR:

If you're interested in using Resource Monitor (really nice if you don't already), you can access it by following the below steps:

1) Click the Windows Icon/Start Menu
2) Type "Resmon" to access the Run Command
3) This opens Resource Manager.
4) Click on the Memory tab.

You can now monitor how much memory your computer is using while playing. FYI-I played while RPG Maker was open. When I closed out of RPG Maker MV and opened just the game through the folder... that's when I sat around 800-1000 Free MB.

If anyone experiences anymore crashes after you download v1.3... please let me know so I can keep looking into it further.

Either way... v1.3 is now up. :-) Sorry again everyone.
First impressions are that it's a really fun game but I only managed to beat the crypt lord. As soon as I left the floor he was in the game crashed with a screen that said something about a 'range' (forgot to take a screenshot :/ ).

Not sure if this is to do with the memory leak but it's going to be pretty annoying having to go through all the battles again. One recommendation is that you put an autosave feature after every major boss just so players don't have to spend an hour going through the same levels if their game crashes.
Version 1.2 is now officially up and linked properly. If you download or re-download, make sure the zip file says "v1.2" at the end.

Well I played a fair bit more and have some more feedback.
- The healing upgrade is a bit lacklustre, seeing as it fluctuates between +20 to +120-ish. It'd be nice if it were a bit more stable and towards the higher end of that since it your HP at that point is well over double the amount you get and healing items aren't really a good upgrade (more like, Potions are okay but only okay, and they're also very rare on the ground and harder to get the ingredients for).
- I appreciate that Tia gets double attacks sometimes. It's helpful.
- Some way beyond mushrooms and wasting a turn to get more TP would be nice, especially since the mages have to wait forever. I'd rec something that gives maybe 40-50.
- The game crashed on me due to the memory leak issue after the fight with the Baron dude and his family.
- I notice digging spots just dried up.
- There's a bug in the fort where the guy who gives you a gold key for turning in the couple who did the murder keeps giving you gold keys if you talk to him again.
- There's a few mapping mistakes in the forest. Trees that are cut in half.
- The end part has become a bit battle fluff. It feels a bit too much to not only go through the town and kill every enemy twice, but then have slimes and wolves AND guards to kill on top of that. It's a bit too much.
- I meant to mention that I tried to get the white wolf thing near the start but I couldn't trigger him to appear and there were only a few wolves to fight so I never got to finish that quest which was annoying.
- I'm really not a big fan of sidequests that close off for no real good reason. I can understand the one in the fort since you can miss the room with the bodies and/or that guy dies in the attack, (though having the option of seeing someone else about getting a reward from that would be nice) but 'people leave' isn't a great explanation since they were hanging around to check stuff like the druids and such. It was a bit annoying to get the items and not be able to hand them in.
- I don't what what items I should keep and what ones I should sell. Some of them say "someone might buy this for more" and others say about getting a fair price and it's like "who do I sell this shit to to get the best cost?" or even "do I need to keep this for some reason?" since some items are needed for quests. Clearer marking would be nice.

I'll probably go back to the game again after I take a break. That crash really downed me out because I was finally finished with that section and hadn't been able to save for a while.

Oh, another thing I noticed was a lack of quests when going in to the west forest, which is kinda boo. It feels a bit lopsided - more fighting, less questing towards the end.

Still, game is fun. I'm looking forward to your next foray!

Really appreciate the additional feedback :-) I just updated my game with some fixes and put the new version on Dropbox for anyone that hasn't downloaded or would like to get the newer version. Fixes below:

-Focus now gives Sir Edwin & Kit more TP. Increased from 30 to 40.
-Fixed Gilded Sentinel side quest to only give one gold key.
-Dark Forest has less slimes and wolves now. Enemies scaled down about 40%.
-All items that serve no purpose other than to sell have now been marked as "Vendor Junk" in their description.
-Increased the potency of Tia's Cleric's Touch, Regeneration & God's Embrace. She now has a larger base heal with 10% more Variance.
-Health Tonics & Potions now heal more HP.

As for the memory leak. I'm not sure how to fix that. I researched it and it was a common issue for many RPG Maker games, but apparently they fixed it. I just checked the version of my core file, and it's the latest version (1.5.2). I've played through my game quite a bit, and my friend played it once for me on his PC... neither of us crashed. We both do have a similar PC, though. I want to make sure everyone can enjoy the game and fix this... I'm just not sure how to fix it :-( Could it be that I have too much in my game (events, plugins, etc.)

Sorry for the frustration. I have taken your feedback and will use in my next game and other projects. I also made some fixes to a few of your suggestions. You're almost to the end, but hopefully these updates help those that haven't played yet or just downloaded my game :-)
